Because if the world's most powerful and influential democracy falls to fascism (as is happening) it impacts us all. And because if the West's superpower fails to hold Russia in check (as is happening) it gives Putin free rein to roll tanks across Europe. Like it or not, the USA is not just any other country.

It is not in Trumps interest to give Europe to Putin so I don’t think that will happen. He is furious the U.K., France and Germany have allowed mass immigration to change their demographic and fail to make any impact on the extremist elements. Because of that he has said repeatedly that we need to do more to be considered allies so the famous ‘special relationship’ the U.K. once shared with America has been paused.

Not any more than I am concerned with things happening elsewhere in the world. I don't know why British people obsess about America so much.

This. Of course it’s concerning. But far less than other countries that we also don’t live in

Because they're the most powerful country in the world - and what they do affects the rest of the world.

Morepositivemum · 13/01/2026 17:09

That one man can do exactly what they feel like doing when for years we watched leaders come up against opposition when trying to help people is just crazy! Goes to show what money can do! Had Biden tried to do any of this he’d have been questioned to see we’re his faculties ok. I think in the future we’ll find out trump had lost his mind a long time ago. I’d hate to be American now

Trump likes ramping things up. And he captured the president of another country, threatened both Denmark (a strong ally which is in both the UN and the EU) and Iran (a loose cannon and very influential in the Middle East) in the course of a week. Apparently he has a fascination for nuclear weapons. I remember reading that during his first presidency he repeatedly asked why it wasn't a good idea for him to use a nuclear bomb. He is also doing everything he possibly can (which is a lot) to accelerate environmental destruction / global warming as fast as he possibly can. It doesn't seem to be just about the money - it's more extreme than that. And he's surrounded himself with nut-job yes men this time round. Does anyone seriously think we're safe just because we don't live in the US?

I think there are areas of the world with far greater problems than america personally. Nigeria, China, Iran, Afghanistan- off the top of my head all Trump a random trigger happy agent.

I think it's adding Trump to the mix is complicating things.

What's happening inside America is truly worrying. The whole country seems to be either volatile or fragile if not both.

Resilience · 13/01/2026 17:51

Did anyone listen to Jeremy Bowen’s commentary on R4 on the weekend? He was talking about how Trump is modelling fifth US President James Monroe’s concept of “spheres of influence” (think empires and empire building). The argument was that the world is returning to a model of empires, where countries either lead empires of their own (if strong) or become swallowed up in the empires of others (if weak). Put in is empire building, so is China. Trump is following suit.

Although I find this ideologically problematic, it does beg the question of where we (Europe and the UK) will find ourselves if we don’t get a grip.

District66 · 13/01/2026 17:52

I’m concerned about what’s happening in Iran. They’re going to start hanging civilians on Wednesday for protesting.
If Trump actually has any sway whatsoever Tuesday night would be a good time to start utilising it

Exactly. I’m far, far more concerned about the plight of women living in Iran or under the Taliban. I’m more concerned about children forcibly hooked on heroine so they can be enslaved and exploited in the diamond trade.

I’m a Brit living in America and I do not “worry” about my adopted country any more than the rest of the world, and a lot less than large swathes of the globe where there is MUCH greater suffering.

The main difference is that those countries always had problems in some form. Not much has changed. The US on the other hand used to claim to be the leader of the free world. It was supposedly a democracy. So it's fallen from a far greater height. It also has a lot of influence and a lot of weapons. That's why people are worried.

Doubt it, america has a very different culture to the UK.

We shouldn't be complacent though.

Really shocked at your reply. It affects UK totally. Everything they do in USA has a ripple knock on.

No. I never worry about something I can’t do anything about.

Yes, I recommend her too.

For Trump, his cronies and the fossil fuel lobby....

Sadly @LemonyCurdhasn't come back to enlighten us of the benefits of Trump. I wonder why?

I would absolutely agree with this. It seems to be convenient distraction from serious issues within our own countries. I watched some interviews with US citizens who support controlled immigration and the main theme seems to be they don't want America to end UK like the UK who have completely lost control of their borders.

CheeseyOnionPie · 14/01/2026 18:44

LemonyCurd · 13/01/2026 16:13

No. It’s better under Trump

Really? How?

RichardTemplethatbeatingRythm · 14/01/2026 20:01

His mouthing 'Fuck you 'acompanied with the middle finger at a heckler at a Ford car plant is this the best America could drum up for a President.
Oh and the Whitehouse issued a statement justifying it🤯.

As many pp have said ICE are trumps brown shirts.

scorpiogirly · 14/01/2026 20:03

No. These nuisance people need to be brought in line. We need similar here with the regular riots that are disguised as protests. Instead we have police who just stand back and are too scared to do anything.

Actually you don't need to answer that🤯

RichardTemplethatbeatingRythm · 14/01/2026 20:06

We don't have regular riots

Nincompoo · 14/01/2026 20:11

Iran is what I am worried about at the moment.

Trump is a monstrosity but at least he doesn’t pussy foot around things like the wet lettuces we’ve for running this country.

Berlinlover · 14/01/2026 20:17

I’m a lot more worried about what’s going on here in my hometown to be honest. I miss the Ireland I grew up in.
