What time do you get up on a school day ? We are late everyday ! Not sure how early I need to be getting up !!

Don't understand why schools have to start so bloody early. Sure have optional early opening for people that need it for childcare but otherwise - open at a reasonable time. As in not before at least 9:30. Same for world of work. Unless it's an essential service, why the need to open at 8am?!

Because otherwise everything would end much later? Our school starts at 830 (high school) and 850 (primary school). If they started later then kids would be at school until 4 or later and miss the entire afternoon. Or do you think it should just be a shortened day with less playtime?

Ihaveoflate · 12/01/2026 14:37

My 6 year old wakes up naturally at around 6:30 and I wake with her. My alarm is set for 6:45 as a back up.

We're out of the house at 7:20 for work and breakfast club. It's not stressful but the rule is dress before going downstairs and no TV. I do her hair while she's eating breakfast.

HisNotHes · 12/01/2026 14:37

When mine were infants/juniors age we used to get up around 6.30 and left the house around 8.15. However this was because they naturally woke up early, we never had to set an alarm and probably would have woken later if it had been a choice. All we did was getting ready though, no tv or screens.

Natsku · 12/01/2026 14:38

I leave before anyone gets up so not my problem at all (which almost makes up for the fact that I have to get up at 4:30 for work) but DS's school starts at 8, he needs to leave at 7:30 and I think OH wakes him up around 6:30 and that works out well.

Topjoe19 · 12/01/2026 14:44

I like to wake up around 6.30/6.45am as I don't like to be rushed in the morning & like a calm cuppa before the rush begins.

DC up at 7.30am latest which gives them an hour. They should get up earlier really as we are often running out of the door nearly missing the school gate! They also like to take their time in the morning. But I don't like to wake them earlier as they need their sleep.

Hohumdedum · 12/01/2026 15:01

8 to leave the house at 8.40 (school is 5 mins away).

Routine is -

I get the uniform and get DC dressed.
Make DC's breakfast
I have shower and dress whilst DC eats breakfast
I make packed lunch if necessary (DC's still eating breakfast)
Put on shoes and leave.

I eat breakfast when I get home again.

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 12/01/2026 15:04

kids are 10 and 13. I wake up at 7.45 and wake them. Eldest leaves at 8.30, youngest at 8.40

MidnightPatrol · 12/01/2026 15:04

630!

AliasGrape · 12/01/2026 15:10

DD is an early riser - 5 am this morning for example, but somewhere around 6.30 more normal. We have an alarm set for 7.15 as a backup just in case but never really need it.

School is a short walk away and they have a drop off window of 8.45 to 9, we’re never late for school but often pushing it to be there in time for me to get home and start work for 9, even with the early start.

I’ve always done breakfast in pyjamas - mainly because she’s messy and also because breakfast usually involved peanut butter in some form so I feel she should wash hands and face and brush teeth/ change clothes because there are children with allergies in her class. But that is definitely where we lose time, she comes downstairs and has breakfast, I get sucked into thinking I’ll just empty the dishwasher/ take the recycling out. She then finds some random tiny piece of a toy that it’s vital she does something with, or decides her teddy needs a manicure or whatever it is, and then it’s the battle to get her washed, dressed, back downstairs and out the door etc. Bag is always packed the night before, uniform laid out etc, no screens in the morning - I really don’t know where we lose the time honestly. I’m going to try getting her dressed before going downstairs I think.

ShesTheAlbatross · 12/01/2026 15:13

We do breakfast at 7:45, DC (aged 3&6, 3 yr old is at a preschool based at DD1’s school so only one drop off) then get dressed, we’re out the door at 8:30.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 12/01/2026 15:13

6.30.
Gives me time to get a shower and dressed before I wake them at 7. We aim to be out of the house by 8.20

Mamabear487 · 12/01/2026 15:14

I get up at 6, shower and get ready and wake my eldest up at 6.30 then my yougest about 6.50. They like to faff around in the morning. Get them all ready and go down for breakfast at 7.30. Do spellings and reading then they have about 15 mins playtime and leave at 8.20

July2026 · 12/01/2026 15:28

No school yet until next year but.. parents wake at least 1 hour before we need to leave. Will let DC sleep until 30 mins before we need to leave. Sometimes it's a bit rushed but I rather let him sleep!

Hairypotatocat · 12/01/2026 17:14

Bitzee · 11/01/2026 17:38

Up at 6.45 (us) and 7 (kids) to leave at 7.45.

Same here!

ShetlandishMum · 12/01/2026 17:17

Child leaves at 7.45. School 8.15.

Up at 6.30. Music practise 15 min in the morning.

Thistimearound · 12/01/2026 17:18

I honestly think it’s as simple as: If you’re usually ten / twenty minutes late, get up ten / twenty minutes earlier. 🤷‍♀️

I wake up about 70 minutes before we need to leave the house and the kids need about 40 minutes BUT that’s with a lot of hand holding - their breakfasts are made by that point and on the table, I lay out their clothes, pack their bags etc. I’ll also be shouting out regularly “you should be getting dressed now!” etc and hurrying them along.

If I was expecting more independence from them I’d probably need to add at least 30 minutes.

dontforgetme · 12/01/2026 17:39

7am for out the door at 8.10am.

HeyThereDelila · 12/01/2026 17:42

7am is when DS wakes up. DH gets up with him and baby while I lie in (baby awake through the night); he gets them breakfast, dressed and takes them to school which is a 3 minute walk away- usually there by 8.40/8.45am. School gates close at 8.50 then he brings baby home to me and starts work (from home).
