What time do you get up on a school day ? We are late everyday ! Not sure how early I need to be getting up !!

OP posts:
Kitchenbattle · 11/01/2026 18:11

Dc start school at 8:40 and 8:45 so I wake at 6:00, wake them at 7ish and we leave at 8:10

Iocanepowder · 11/01/2026 18:11

My 5 year old likes to get up as early as 5.45am. It’s shit.

riskycleo · 11/01/2026 18:17

7am is out of bed time and straight to make breakfast.
7.30 need to start getting dressed and ready
Once dressed, hair and teeth they can do what they want - play/read/watch TV and that's when I usually get myself ready.
8.25 start shoes and coats etc
8.30 leave house

School gate opens 8.40

butternut123 · 11/01/2026 18:34

I wake at 6:30, kids roughly the same time

You need to get up earlier than you do now. School clothes, shoes, bags, anything they need like PE kit, laid out night before, along with any forms and/or money they need to take into school.

molifly · 11/01/2026 19:27

6am to leave at 7.30

Ljzjta · 11/01/2026 20:52

Up at 6/6:30am, I start at 7am making 3x packed lunches plus my own for work, get them breakfast, cleaned up after breakfast, dressed, me showered, dressed, makeup on, bags organised to be out the door for 8:25 takes the whole time.

laesosalt · 12/01/2026 13:50

@Bitzee Super woman!!!!

Pineapplewaves · 12/01/2026 13:56

I get up two hours before departure, get showered and dressed, pack school bags and lunches, lay out the breakfast things, make the beds, open the curtains etc. I wake DC up an hour before departure, they have breakfast, watch some kids TV, clean teeth, get dressed and we depart. We are all very leisurely, I like to read the news while eating my breakfast, DC like to watch the full episode of a program.

McQueensMuse · 12/01/2026 14:03

The latest I could wake up is 45 minutes before I need to leave the house.
That would be 8am and it would be a stressful rush.

My ideal scenario is wake at six and have that hour to myself pottering and getting ready before my son wakes up and let him have a slower morning getting ready.

Reality is usually up at half seven though. Which is fine if I am on top of things, clothes looked out, bag packed, hair doesn’t need washed but if I’m unorganised even an hour and a half feels a bit chaotic.

Purlant · 12/01/2026 14:10

Around 0720, sometimes 0730 depending on how tired. We leave around 0740/5 for breakfast club. Lunch at school so no breakfast or lunch needing to be made.

cadburyegg · 12/01/2026 14:12

I do the morning school run 3 days a week and I get us all up by 7.30.

pastabest · 12/01/2026 14:12

Up at 7

Age 7 and 9

School starts at 8.30 and is 4 miles / 10 min drive away (rural) so out of the house at 8.20

We are usually ready to go at 8am ish and have 20 mins of hanging around.

It used to take longer when they were smaller but they can and do get themselves dressed completly independently now, can get their own cereals and be left eating breakfast etc while adults get ready.

Swissmeringue · 12/01/2026 14:12

7:30 ish, our 3 year old often wakes a bit earlier, but he just comes and gets in bed with us for a cuddle. Our 7 year old has to be turfed out of bed. We leave for school at 8:30, it's a 15 minute walk. I find an hour is sufficient for getting them ready. DH wakes up with us on WFH days, but leaves at 6:30 when he's going to the office.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 12/01/2026 14:14

They are 9 and 13 and I get up at 6.45 so I can shower and get ready then I call them when I’m done about 7.15. They have plenty of time for breakfast and getting dressed and teeth/toilet. Out the door by 8.20.

Amiunemployable · 12/01/2026 14:14

My alarm is set for 7:30 and we are supposed to leave around 8:15-8:20 to be there for 8:35.

Reality is though that none of us are morning people. Especially me. I constantly wake up late, and thus, we are late most days.

I call the days we get there by 9 a win, and the days we get there by 9:15 a lose!

JanuaryJasmine · 12/01/2026 14:17

FuckOffWithYourFlannelNonsense · 11/01/2026 17:51

Earlier than you do now.

How late are you?

If it's 10 minutes, then you need to get up at least 10 minutes earlier.

If it's half an hour, then you need to get up at least half an hour earlier.

This

it doesn't matter what other people do, you need to get up earlier or reorganise your morning routine.

Don't understand why schools have to start so bloody early. Sure have optional early opening for people that need it for childcare but otherwise - open at a reasonable time. As in not before at least 9:30. Same for world of work. Unless it's an essential service, why the need to open at 8am?!

Cheepcheepcheep · 12/01/2026 14:21

Rileysp · 11/01/2026 18:00

Mine wake about 5.30-6

alarms are not an issue we need worry about

Same here. Was talking to a friend earlier who didn’t see her 5yo until 8.30am on Saturday. It’s evens most days on whether my 5yo and 3yo will be up just before or just after 6. I long for a life where I need to set alarms.

We had a delayed opening day to 10am a couple of months ago and it was so nice! Our morning was so much more relaxed, DD1 was way happier, she had time to do some stuff at home, no one was rushed or stressed. Obviously not compatible with many people’s working patterns but it did make me think that for us it would be much better!

Favouritefruits · 12/01/2026 14:29

7am out the door at 8.20

Crunchymum · 12/01/2026 14:29

Depends on the day as we have a few early morning clubs.

DC1 is up at 7.15 and leaves at 8.15 (secondary age)
DC2 and DC3 up between 6:45 and 7:15 and we leave at either 7:50 or 8:35 depending on the day.

I am up anywhere between 6am and 6:50am depending on day / if I need to wash my hair etc. I have a shower before kids get up and I have breakfast ready for when I wake the kids (just porridge or toast usually) and I do lunches for 2 out of 3 DC every morning. We do however pack bags the night before.

One thing that really helps is I have a weekly amount of uniform for all the kids so this is washed and ironed at the weekend and each child has a shirt / polo / trousers / skirt for each day of the week. I buy supermarket and find having one for each day much easier than having to wash and dry things midweek.

PurpleThistle7 · 12/01/2026 14:31

The answer for you is obviously either get up earlier or get more organised the day before. There's no magic time that works for everyone.

We get a lot done before going to bed. The kids get up at 7 and are out the door at 810 but that is what works for us. My husband and I hybrid work so whoever is at home that day makes sure to get the kids sorted - the person getting to an office ignores the chaos and gets themselves ready.

icallshade · 12/01/2026 14:32

3 and 1 year old.
I get up at 6am.
Youngest is 13 months, clingy and can't walk so everything is harder with him. I get myself dressed and breakfasted between 6-6.30 then sort the children to be at nursery for 8am.

I am sure schools would love to take on this request!!

They can't win can they? I mean I get that it's probably too early for those who don't have to rush to be at the office for 9am but are we seriously suggesting we rejig the whole school day as some people prefer not to get up early?
