Had a weird fall recently . (I’m 34 so it’s not ‘a fall’ but I equally didn’t fall over)

I was in the shower and I was getting out of the bath to grab a new bottle of conditioner. I don’t know how but my left legs slipped outwards as I put my right on the floor. I ended up smacking my head on the toilet, landing really really hard on my elbow, shoulder and also my hip. My left leg remained mainly in the bath.

Oh My Word I am in an entire world of pain still. I am quite shocked at how much pain I’m in. It’s just such an odd thing to have happened! Am I alone in being shocked and a bit shaken (ridiculous) by this?

photo is of my hip not arse it’s just a really bad angle!! I did ice it but it doesn’t appear to have done anything!

Can’t see any pics but sorry you had a nasty fall. Life in our 30’s we realise our body’s change and can’t handle things as well it sucks!!!!

HelpMeGetThrough · 11/01/2026 06:37

I know how you feel. I’m mid 50s and had a bad fall a week before Christmas. My knee gave out walking down a hill and I fell directly onto my shoulder. I didn’t break it, but it’s still extremely painful and I don’t have full movement.

I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, which accounts for me knee giving out and probably when the shoulder pain is still bad.

It really shook me up and the pain was something else.

muddyford · 11/01/2026 06:48

Ouch. You poor thing. I'm in my early 60s and a friend of similar age was pondering when these incidents become 'a fall' and not just 'falling over '.

shellyleppard · 11/01/2026 06:52

I tripped over a chair leg and fsce planted along the hall. Lay on the floor for a few minutes violently swearing. Still have a line of violently coloured bruises down one side.....it bloody hurt!!! Sympathy op I feel your pain

EmotionallyWeird · 11/01/2026 08:40

Sorry to hear about all these painful accidents. I guess they hurt more as adults because we're heavier and not as flexible.

You don't have to say you had "a fall" at any age. Strictly speaking, in health and safety terms, "a fall" is from one level to another. I fully intend to be still saying "I fell over" when I'm 100.

ItsSlipperyWhenWet · 11/01/2026 15:52

Glad it’s not just me!!

I mean I think there’s a huge difference between a fall and smacking your head on the toilet. Most adults can withstand a fall without too much injury but slipping in the shower and smacking into bathroom fixtures is another level. Your body is probably reacting normally as opposed to overreacting to the fall.

Clychaugog · 11/01/2026 16:04

Yeah. That sounds really painful, regardless of being a grown up...

Wishing you a speedy recovery 💐

Brendathebear · 11/01/2026 16:11

That wasnt just a fall, it was a fall and smacking your head. Get well soon!

JohnTheRevelator · 11/01/2026 16:11

Wow! What a beauty! Seriously, sorry to hear that you've hurt yourself so badly. I fell over a couple of years ago coming home from seeing a live band. Thankfully,it was late at night and there was hardly anyone around to witness it. I really hurt my right hip,had a massive bruise and couldn't lay on that side to sleep for about 10 days afterwards.

swingingbytheseat · 11/01/2026 16:17

That isn’t a normal fall Op because you hit your head on the toilet!! Ouch!! I’m so sorry to hear it, please be kind to yourself. I skidded off my bike on black ice yesterday. That really bloody hurt as well. I did some really gentle yoga today and it helped, just twists and things. I feel like everything tenses/stiffens up after a fall and so you’re working with that as well as the original pain 😩

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 11/01/2026 16:19

Adults tense up when they lose their balance and naturally attempt to brace for the impact, kids don't do this. It's why they might end up with a bump or a scrape but we get broken wrists, broken hips, huge bruises etc

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 11/01/2026 16:20

Hi, that is a really nasty fall. Did you get it checked out in A&E?

Ilikewinter · 11/01/2026 16:21

Ooh that's looks painful! I'm 49 and fell over walking the dog this morning - I somehow managed to slip sideways so my shoulder and hip/outer thigh took the brunt, dint half bloody hurt, it took me a minite to get back up, and my poor dog just stood there looking at me !

shellyleppard · 11/01/2026 16:22

@ItsSlipperyWhenWet ouch!!! I've got 3 of those after my fall last week.... it's slowly getting better x hope you feel better soon x

BertieBotts · 11/01/2026 16:23

I think it's because we are heavier. I don't know, though. I used to absolutely wail when I fell over as a child and experienced it as terribly painful and upsetting, especially a grazed knee/elbow. I do know what you mean about the huge bruises that last for days, though!

Overtheatlantic · 11/01/2026 16:24

So sorry about this, OP. That’s a nasty bruise. It’s jarring having a fall; really messes you up and feels very emotional, at least for me!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 11/01/2026 16:24

Ow! You poor thing! Kids, I think, have less far to fall and tend to be more relaxed when they fall over. I fell out running the other year, dislocated my finger as I landed and didn't realise. I only found out when I stood up, and pushing my hand against the ground to get back up popped the finger back in again. Luckily I was in a field so I just fell into mud.

I'm in my sixties and it did affect my confidence for a while. I took up Pilates to help strengthen my core to hopefully stop me doing it again!

Aintgointogoa · 11/01/2026 16:31

Ouch ! I started getting anxious whilst showering a coupla years ago after a bad fall (in the street - a dark unlit street where a black grille had been put at the top of some steep steps for wheelchair access - of course I couldn’t see it) 7 stitches. I even keep my phone within reach at all times now (I live alone, the marble floors can be slippery) The fear of the fall is real (for me) ! It sucks. That’s one MF bruise but is your head ok OP ? If you’re not anti I highly recommend codeine 🫠 💐

PashaMinaMio · 11/01/2026 16:34

Oh no you poor thing!
I’ve had several trips, flat out, in recent months. No loss of balance, just stupid mistakes. Changes of level, too vigorous on squash court, gardening trip, and recent black ice!

Im currently on double crutches from a fkng slip on ice a week ago. Nothing ever broken just a killer of swelling and pain. Total incapacity! Maddening.
Get well soon.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 11/01/2026 16:39

YANBU. I tripped over my own bloody feet 2 years ago. Shattered my shoulder, broke my elbow and tore 3 ligaments in my wrist. I'm like Humpty Dumpty and the surgeons are still trying to put me back together again.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/01/2026 16:41

You probably fell particularly hard as it sounds like a weird fall, not something your body ‘knew’ how to react to like eg tripping. Ow……Flowers

oocooloo · 11/01/2026 16:47

We are heavier than kids, and we do brace when we fall.

Oh and in my late 60s, I never have a fall, I "trip over" even though there's nothing to actually trip over 😊I'm on low dose aspirin so although (touch wood) I haven't fallen yet, I can tell you that the bruises on Donald Trumps hands are nothing to those I get when I bash into the door handle or my sleeve gets caught, or other simple things like that. The bruising is unreal.

I hope you'll be OK and keep an eye on the head injury if you feel sleepy or anything.

ItsSlipperyWhenWet · 11/01/2026 20:59

the bruise is bad isn’t it??

What did the hip land on? It is quite the impressive bruise!

I fell out the shower a few years ago, knocked myself out cold. Unfortunately it was when the hairdresser was here who heard the thud and came to check on me (I have very low bp and a heart issue so prone to fainting).
