to have gained a stone?

Roobetharack · 10/01/2026 14:12

I'm 49 and weighed myself for the first time in years yesterday, and was 11 stones 4lb. I've never weighed more than this, judging by the fitting of my clothes.

When I was 28 years old, I weighed 10 stones 3lb. It's the last time I was regularly weighing myself and perpetually trying to lose weight.

I mentioned to my good friend that I'd put on a stone over the twenty years and she was worried. She suggesting Mounjaro.

AIBU to acknowledge that I'm overweight (I'm 5ft 6), but don't think that gaining a stone in twenty years - taking into account pregnancy etc which has happened in that time - is too much of a worry?

Your friend is being ridiculous. You sound fine to me

MandemChickenShop · 10/01/2026 14:14

Your friend is weird

NarwhalBuddy · 10/01/2026 14:15

Peoples bodies aren’t supposed to stay exactly the same the whole time they are alive.

dinkybella77 · 10/01/2026 14:15

No I don't think that seems like a big concern. Are you otherwise fit and healthy? How do you feel in yourself?
I go by these things more than the scales. My face always looks chubby in photos if I have gained too much and my clothes fit uncomfortably.

Moveoverdarlin · 10/01/2026 14:15

A stone in twenty years is hardly drastic. At 28 I was 9 stone. But now I’m exactly the same age and weight as you. I’m definitely overweight but trying to shift a stone by just cutting out crap and walking. Being 11stone 4 pounds at 5 foot six is not heavily overweight. But yes you’d feel better if you shifted a stone.

Jugendstiel · 10/01/2026 14:17

I think the norm of healthy weight gain used to be half a stone. So when middle aged, without being overweight, it is common to be 7lbs heavier.

I have this as my target acceptable weight for weightloss, though I'd like to be back at my natural weight which was bang in the middle of BMI. (Currently overweight)

So, yes it is completely normal to have gained that amount - it's only a few ounces a year, taking into account pregnancy etc. But it does add up. It might be an idea to lose some, as we can get more sedentary later in life. You don't want to gain another stone over the next twenty years.

I'm not lecturing you - I'm lecturing myself here. Similar situation, but more than a stone - a stone and a half over 30 years.

Teddd · 10/01/2026 14:17

I could put on a stone in two weeks so I think you’re doing alright having only managed it in twenty years.

PinkSpritz · 10/01/2026 14:17

You are nowhere near qualifying for Mounjaro at 11 stone and 5ft 6. It's a treatment for obesity and you couldn't get it legitimately.

Fishingboatbobbingnight · 10/01/2026 14:17

You are literally 4ibs above a healthy bmi ! Just eat healthy and walk a bit. !! MJ is for bmi 30+ .. you are bmi 25.4 !

KimberleyClark · 10/01/2026 14:21

Your BMI is 25.5. No one is going to prescribe you Mounjaro. What size frame are you?

Roobetharack · 10/01/2026 14:22

Thanks everyone. I thought I was overweight, hence the weighing yesterday, and I do aim to get back into healthy BMI.

You’re nowhere near eligible for weight loss drugs, nor should you be! Your friend is being completely daft.

Steamedcarrot · 10/01/2026 14:23

What did your “friend” actually say @Roobetharack ?

I'm a size 14. Would like to be back in size 10/12.

Can't remember her exact words, but something like "A stone?! That's a lot in twenty years!" then suggested going online and buying Mounjaro.

Just to reiterate, I know that I'm overweight. I just didn't think that a stone in 20 years was significant.

You can’t remember what she said? But she only said it yesterday or today!

ShawnaMacallister · 10/01/2026 14:26

A stone gain from your twenties to your forties is quite normal!

Steamedcarrot · 10/01/2026 14:26

How close are you to this friend? What’s her weight like?

We're very close and she certainly wasn't being malicious. She's slim.

A stone in 20 years?! Many people put a stone on in a couple of months when they don’t eat healthily!

So in not malicious

She’s either not the brightest spark or she said it without thinking or… she’s genuinely worried about you (but has no idea about MJ min requirements!)

RecordBreakers · 10/01/2026 14:35

Your friend is being ridiculous.

It is very normal to put on weight as you get a bit older.

It doesn't sound like you are anywhere near obese.

Not a bad idea, now you are aware of it, to try to make some tweaks to your lifestyle as weight does go on more and more easily the older you get, and of course it is good for all of our health and wellbeing to be a healthier weight.

But your friend is bonkers.
it would be unusual for a woman of 49 not to be heavier than their 28 yr old self, if they haven't been consciously monitoring it all their lives.

Yes, I said not malicious. I'm not picking my friend apart, I'm asking whether a stone in twenty years is a worry.
