to have gained a stone?

I'm 49 and weighed myself for the first time in years yesterday, and was 11 stones 4lb. I've never weighed more than this, judging by the fitting of my clothes.

When I was 28 years old, I weighed 10 stones 3lb. It's the last time I was regularly weighing myself and perpetually trying to lose weight.

I mentioned to my good friend that I'd put on a stone over the twenty years and she was worried. She suggesting Mounjaro.

AIBU to acknowledge that I'm overweight (I'm 5ft 6), but don't think that gaining a stone in twenty years - taking into account pregnancy etc which has happened in that time - is too much of a worry?

What a bizarre comment by your friend.
I’m very similar in size to you by the sounds of it - was 9 and a half to 10 stone for years, eating whatever I wanted pretty much. Now, if I’m not actively watching what I eat I can very easily creep over 11st. I can still get down to 10 but it’s bloody hard work. As we age, our metabolisms change and we need less calories. Not to mention perimenopause yada yada yada…so many reasons.
Yes, you could possibly lose a few pounds but you really don’t need any drastic intervention.
I’m so wary of this increasing trend to take weight loss medication when anything other than clinically obese - recent studies have shown that if you come off them you can put weight back on up to 4x faster.

Maybe go back to your friend and ask whether she really does think that and, if so, why?

Brightlittlecanary · 10/01/2026 15:15

Does she have an eating disorder, as that’s a really bloody odd reaction. But to be honest, so is yours just as bad that you need to add a thread to mumsnet to ask if gaining just over half a pound a year is a problem,

Agreed

I suspect there’s all a bit more to this on both sides

Yes, I said not malicious. I'm not picking my friend apart, I'm asking whether a stone in twenty years is a worry.

Yes. You must have been greedily gobbling up everything in sight to get so overweight. You need to rethink your lifestyle and lose weight asap because the strain you are putting on your heart must frighten you?

I can put a stone on in three months. Your friend is mad. I’m mid 40s and was 9st 2 in my 20s but I’ve had 3 dc and look odd at 9st 10 even (gaunt face) which I got to in 2019. 10st 7 is realistic and comfortable but top end of healthy bmi. Being skinny makes me look older.

Mydahliasareshit · 10/01/2026 15:43

I have easily gained a stone or more in a few months during particularly stressful or grieving periods. Over 20 years is good going!

ChocoChocoLatte · 10/01/2026 15:49

I’m 5ft6 and weigh 16stone. THAT’S overweight. Tell you friend to politely FO

WhatYouWearing · 10/01/2026 16:00

I worry for all the people taking these injections on a whim. We don’t yet know what the long term implications could be. It’s weird that’s the first thing someone would suggest instead of diet and exercise. It should be a last resort for those who truly need it.

do not do anything like mounjaro, you could shave that stone off if you really wanted to with upping steps and cutting back on a few treats but your so close to the healthy BMI range I would just be happy that your body clearly has a well established set point and is tasking care of itself. a stone in 20 years is nothing - if you continued on that trajectory you'll be lucky to become officially obese before old age beat you to it!

Disturbia81 · 10/01/2026 16:42

Wow I can put a stone on in a month. You are doing great OP..

C8H10N4O2 · 10/01/2026 16:54

You are only a few pounds outside the healthy weight band and a stone in 20 years and into midlife is not a big deal.

I would focus on small changes - if you can fit in more steps/physical movement in your day, see if you can reduce foods with refined sugars most of the time, augment fibrous veg and wholegrains etc. These are all changes which will help general health as you age and will continue to benefit after losing a few pounds. All of us benefit from taking a bit of time for ourselves to review life/diet as we age and to consider how we can keep healthy but for the most part small changes are more effective than dramatic efforts.

Smiling2022 · 10/01/2026 18:34

Peri-menopause or menopause maybe?

I literally felt I put a load of weight on overnight around my middle area. I was shocked...

You have nothing to worry about and certainly don't need weight loss injections. Our bodies change as we get older, just focus on healthy eating, exercise, walking etc.

purplerain270 · 10/01/2026 18:49
