AIBU to be anxious about the situation with Greenland?

Just that really.

A few years ago I wouldn't have even considered the concept of America trying to forcefully take a territory which is part of a friendly, peaceful country and fellow Nato member. Now though Trump seems so mad I'm worried it could actually happen.

Surely if it did happen America would be expelled from Nato and ourselves (UK) and other Nato countries would have defend Greenland from a US invasion, and a major international conflict would be triggered.

I can't work out anymore if I'm just being alarmist and have watched too much news, or if this is an actual possibility we should all be worried about.

YABU - This is never going to happen in reality. The news is just scare-mongering.

YANBU - Trump is mad enough to actually attempt this and risk major international conflict.

No point worrying about it until it happens

omggggggg · 10/01/2026 13:10

Nothing you’re able to do about it. Stay off the news

LoisGriffinskitchen · 10/01/2026 13:11

Trump is an asshole but quite honestly it’s the people behind him pulling the strings. He’s not standing up there alone saying this….hes got a whole load of equal scumbags enabling him,

ColdAsAWitches · 10/01/2026 13:12

Agree with the above. There's nothing you can do to prevent it, there's nothing you can do to prepare in case it happens. So there's no point in worrying.

And even if the US did invade, it won't lead to a full scale war between the US and Europe. There may be some minor skirmishes, but no European leader, even the Danish PM, would consider it valuable enough for such a conflict with a current , incredibly powerful, ally.

omggggggg · 10/01/2026 13:18

He’s almost 80 he’ll be off his perch soon enough

Maray1967 · 10/01/2026 13:30

I agree with a pp though - it’s not just him. In his first term there were sensible people around him. It is very different now. JDV is not Mike Pence.

Pinkissmart · 10/01/2026 13:37

I’m worried too. He seems bent on destroying NATO

ilovepuppies2019 · 10/01/2026 13:38

Tabby. Yes, I think it could happen although still very unlikely. Trump is mad with power and the total lack of pushback on him stealing Venezuela’s oil has convinced him that he’s invincible. He wants to add to the USA’s territory because it hasn’t been done in so long and would like everyone to look in a direction away from those Epstein files.

Having said that, I doubt it will led to much conflict and not an all out war. It will likely be done by the time most or Europe realise it’s happening. Most European leaders won’t want an armed conflict and wouldn’t have a chance unless all of Europe come together. This would take forces off the Putin situation and firing on Americans would be unthinkable. Likely they will choose to appease Trump (which is terrifying). I suspect ther the response will be much like Venezuela, meaning lots of statements. We would likely impose sanctions and kick USA troops out of most European bases. Hopefully the sanctions would be severe enough to leave Walmart shelves empty and devastate the US economy but they probably won’t. And that will be it.

Every leader would be praying that Trump falls off his perch or impeached and a sane president came to power to reverse things. Appeasement will be easier in hopes of this happening.

He’s an old man desperately trying to secure himself a legacy and a place in the history books with his last grasp of power (Putin is in the same camp).
I’m worried too. Anyone with huge amounts of power and absolutely nothing to lose is pretty dangerous to the rest of us imo.

It is sxaey, i dont know how its all happening tbh its bonkers

He will do something without a doubt. And I hope his recent actions will lose the midterm elections for the Republicans. Whatever happens in Greenland will be rolled back when the Democrats are next in power.

Tpu · 10/01/2026 13:54

I don’t think it is particularly alarmist. But my own wish is that NATO plus EU are prepared to go to war over this.

I’m in my fifties and would volunteer to make sure that greedy cunt was put back in his orange box. I would follow it up with a Treaty of Versailles on the US. They are outrageous.

Most likely he will but as other posters have said, it’s not just him. It’s a whole new ideology.

Why would the Dems roll it back? Trump would have done the dirty work for them, their hands would be clean, but they could keep Greenland with its oil and geopolitical gains.

helpfulperson · 10/01/2026 14:11

I think he may well try it. A couple of European countries have made it clear if he does then American forces will be expelled from bases in their country. If NATO doesn't make a stand over this we might as well all start learning the words to star spangled banner because he won't stop there.

2000Essays · 10/01/2026 14:16

Yes I’m anxious about it too. The audacity. Canada is right next to it, they’d be right bang in the middle of two US territories, wouldn’t be long until they decided they needed that too.

How did the US turn into such a greedy arrogant dictatorship so easily?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 10/01/2026 14:30

Of course he is. Like all disaster capitalists, he loves instability and chaos because there is money to be made out of it.

How did the US turn into such a greedy arrogant dictatorship so easily?

Sheer ignorance and stupidity, and millions of people whose over-riding priority is to "stick it to the Libs" even if that means they get flushed down the toilet along with all the things they profess to hate.

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 10/01/2026 14:35

The real story is oil, both in Greenland and in Venezuela. As the Arctic ice melts (thanks in no small part to Trumps determination to ignore green issues) oil and other mineral extraction becomes feasible, and he wants it. Russia is a factor but he can already put as many troops as he wants there. He needs to own it to get the resources. He's the real life personification of a Bond villain, seeking world domination.

MissyB1 · 10/01/2026 14:40

He will do it. European Countries then need to expel all American military and close their sites, and chuck them out of our UK GCHQ too. And then minimise all trade with them. It will be painful but worth it.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 10/01/2026 14:44

If America makes a move for Greenland, the UK will help them, even if the rest of Europe stands against it. Just like we did with the theft of a Russian oil tanker. No thoughts to how unsafe it makes us, just focused on being the US’s lapdog

Evaka · 10/01/2026 14:51

Yeah, the first days of this year have been jaw dropping. World order is transforming.

They have zero interest in upholding Trumps madness.

I disagree. In fact the messaging seems to be changing as I have seen two interviews this morning saying if he makes a miltary move Europe will take away all American European bases and they will be expelled from Nato.

Making me think actually EU leaders think he is enough of a narrasisst he will do it.

Because Maga have now completely shred any pretence of being anything other than what they are. History really does repeat its self. It will take generations to repair the damage this administration has and is causing.

This. And most of these people don’t know anything, nothing at all, about the world outside of the US, or about history or political realities. Nor do they care.

unless one has travelled widely in the Bible Belt and Midwest - and not just as a tourist - it is difficult to comprehend how far removed from reality some of these people are.

As they say, only the good die young. There are loads of ancient billionaire wankers with access to the best medical care money can buy.

I do thank Trump for proving the non-existence of karma.
