Thinking Vinted will see Charity Shops out of business?

If you're a chazza fan like me have you noticed how they're not busy?
Vinted is new in the great scheme of things and fantastic. It's a new discovery] for me.
I'm not sure how sympathetic I am towards chazzas losing business because the profits aren't shared

Chazza is utterly horrible. Please stop.

Make me

ICanSpellConfusionWithaK · 10/01/2026 19:56

I used to give everything to charity without a second thought then my husband lost his job. I now sell what I can on Vinted and donate what doesn’t sell after a certain time period.

PistachioTiramisu · 10/01/2026 19:56

What on earth is 'chazza'?

TrentCrimmsflowinglocks · 10/01/2026 20:00

Nope. Vinted has gone massively downhill. Awkward sizing categories for women’s clothes (12-14, 14-16 - makes it harder to find what you are looking for), plus the resellers are all flocking there now and the prices have hiked up massively in women’s clothes. Which makes buying a risk if you’re not sure if it will fit /suit you. Used to shop on Vinted all the time but haven’t bought anything on there for a good couple of months now.

laloue · 10/01/2026 20:25

I haven’t read the whole thread , but I now help manage 2 charity shops in a group. My biggest sale today was to someone who was clearly a reseller - she spent around 20% of my takings today. We sell through eBay and we have a lot of volunteers with incredible knowledge (books, jewellery, china etc) which helps ,but what we don’t have is time to photograph and upload , wrap, send etc etc .I genuinely feel it works both ways - we’ve made money for the charity and she’s going to make a few quid too.

Chinsupmeloves · 10/01/2026 20:32

I've gone down that alternative of preferring to look on vinted and pay less including p and p for charity shop items. I do love a good rummage when I'm passing one but don't go out shopping as much anymore. Guess it's a sign of the times and also I don't enjoy walking about town centres as much anymore, older and cba! Xxx

tempname1234 · 10/01/2026 20:42

No. It is too much faff to list all your items, hold on to them shen you really want a clear out, then faff about wrapping up, going to wherever to send and possibly have arguments with chancer buyers.

if you’re having a clear out, bring it to the charity shop.

I don't think 'chazza' will catch on

I've called it that for ages. So does everyone I know.

Where in the UK are you hearing this?

North west

They will be facing the same pressure of other high street stores. Less footfall, online competitors, higher utilities costs, customers having less disposable income.

Plus -

Drop in quality of high street fashion affecting donation quality.

Less availability of experienced volunteers due to cost of living and need to stay on paid work/rise in retirement age.

Absolutely correct.

Supersimkin7 · 10/01/2026 20:56

Vinted is cheaper than charity shops.

I’d far rather pay a small human who needs money than a huge institution that doesn’t. No matter how expensively tear-jerking its tv ads.

I do direct giving for clothes - London swap and local charities that give stuff directly to real people. Charity works very well in this model.

I was surprised to see a charity shop in my suburb of outer London close down.
I love a browse for the unexpected find!

Rent is too high.

I don’t think, like lots of people you understand how charities work.

Foggytree · 10/01/2026 21:02

The chazzas in my local town are still busy.

To answer your question, no I don't think vinted will see them off. I've had a disappointing experience of buying from vinted and ebay and it's put me off buying unless I know exactly what I'm getting, and usually new.

Some chazzas do try to overcharge though, and ppl will look the exact thing up and buy on vinted / ebay if they aren't careful.

Netcurtainnelly · 10/01/2026 21:47

Vinted has made the owners very rich so i doubt they are bothered about charity shops.

I think there's room for both. Not everyone wants to buy and sell online.

Frumpitydoo · 10/01/2026 22:06

Too late, genteel Mumsnet folk. Chazzer has been "a thing" for yonks!

YouBelongHere · 10/01/2026 22:09

Whilst I love mooching the charity shops and do donate some things, I definitely keep back decent clothes for myself.

I used to donate them because I wanted other young plus size girls to find clothes in their size that didn't just look like they were for old people. Charity shops sell a lot of things out the back door though. So now I sell it myself for a fair price - I get cash, someone else gets a bargain. Win/Win.

Books/homeware I still look for in charity shops.

Did you change your username to prove this point? Because I feel like I can hear you saying both leccy bill and chazza in a scouse accent 😂

Denim4ever · 10/01/2026 23:20

This is a strange thread. Charity shops are thriving round here 50 or so minutes from London. The only one I seriously don't rate is Oxfam where they do overcharge.

Monty27 · 10/01/2026 23:39

Usernamenotav · 10/01/2026 12:35

No, using the word 'chazza' won't catch on (hopefully)

It's a pretty common nickname for charity shops used on here and in other places..

OP posts:
MaturingCheeseball · 11/01/2026 09:33

It may be a “common nickname” but it sounds absolutely rock bottom.

Binus · 11/01/2026 09:41

Chazza is decades old, obviously, but I think this thread is the first time I've seen the 'er' spelling!

Also I'm not sure some thread contributors have realised that complaining about the use of regionally associated slang words makes us use them more...

BeMellowAquaSquid · 11/01/2026 09:49

I know people who go to charity shops buy their stuff and sell it on Vinted so I guess it’s having a positive impact

IDontHateRainbows · 11/01/2026 11:11

I sell on vinted but only stuff ill get at least a tenner for like a coat or decent brand dress. Everything else goes to the local cats protection who saved our cat's life as a kitten when we stupidly hadn't got insurance so I'm forever grateful! Plus its a lovely shop, best chazza in town.
