To keep spreadable butter in the cupboard

willywallaby · 08/01/2026 21:05

Every time MIL comes round she moves the spreadable butter from the cupboard to the fridge and explains that it spreads straight from the fridge, so it needs to be kept in the fridge. Spreadable butter does not spread straight from the fridge though. None of the own brand ones do and Anchor doesn't. I don't know about Lurpak. MIL bakes all her own sourdough so maybe it spreads better on there. And it spreads okay on toast. But making a regular sandwich on supermarket sliced bread is a ridiculous experience with spreadable butter unless it's at room temp. I only keep spreadable butter in the fridge if the weather is hot enough to liquify the butter. Or if MIL has been round and I haven't put things right again.

That's what they want you to think.

My lurpak doesn't spread straight from the fridge! Not unless I buy the "softest" one.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/01/2026 21:33

We keep our buttery spread in the fridge but IMO butter (and margarine and real butter ) should go in the bin. ( Few things trip my upchuck reflex than thick butter on bread products )

But I'm obviously quite bonkers !

Smartiepants79 · 08/01/2026 21:34

If I leave my spreadable out of the fridge it melts and splits and then it really doesn’t spread. Spreadable butters have buttermilk and stuff added and are meant to be in the fridge.

You’re paying for rapeseed oil in spreadable butter read the ingredients.

I don't really care about those of you who use block butter, it's not relevant. I didn't ask what butter everybody uses.

Aw c’mon OP, you know a thread is a discussion and is allowed to go a little off topic right?

It went off topic within about 2 replies

“Spreadable mixed fats” wouldn’t sell as well.

I'm paying for the tub really. It's annoying to keep it in the paper and I ain't washing a butter dish.

Butter (spreadable or not) should be kept in the fridge. However if you choose not too that’s completely up to you. She doesn’t have to like it, she’s got no right to change things around in your home!

willywallaby · 08/01/2026 21:56

Why should it be kept in the fridge though, it doesn't go bad within the time we use it

How the hell do you spread it? Ours has to go in the microwave for 10 seconds (portion sized) before it can go on bread.

Warmish modern house and not buying sliced bread.

BeardedBarley · 08/01/2026 22:01

We only have actual butter and it lives in a butter dish in a cupboard.

Flatandhappy · 08/01/2026 22:12

I keep Lurpak spreadable in the fridge and Kerrygold block butter in the cupboard but bearing in mind the forecast here today is 37 degrees and we are in the middle of a heatwave everything is currently in the fridge.

XenoBitch · 08/01/2026 22:15

It should be kept in the fridge. A big hint is that it is in a fridge in the shops to begin with.
I use Lidl spreadable butter. Is rather nice and is spreads well.

But the real issue is the one between yourself and your MIL.

HouseAshamed · 08/01/2026 22:22

The butter dish only needs washing when you put a new block of butter on it.
Even I am not that lazy.

Block butter is kept in the fridge in the supermarket too but people keep that out.

Your MIL is right. It is intended to be kept refrigerated.

Country Life spreadable is spreadable straight from the fridge.

I find if someone (DS) leaves the tub out for too long and it softens, then it stops being spreadable thereafter. Doesn't matter what brand, there is something about warming and cooling it that leads to a permanent change in consistency.

HouseAshamed · 08/01/2026 22:29

@XenoBitch , if you keep the butter in a butter dish and don't let crumbs get in it it doesn't go off for ages.

willywallaby · 08/01/2026 21:30

That's what they want you to think.

But it does. You must have a very cold kitchen if your spreadable butter doesn't go too soft in the kitchen.

I don't think there's such a thing as "too soft" for butter unless it's literally melted. If it's extremely soft then at least it spreads properly. And at this time of year there's no danger of that.

willywallaby · 08/01/2026 22:39

Nobody has told me a reason why it would need to be refrigerated other than "it's intended to be".

HouseAshamed · 08/01/2026 22:39

Spreadable butter goes off much quicker than butter. I don't eat much butter but I like it. The Lidl spreadable is good but the Tesco one isn't.
Lurpak is too expensive.

newrubylane · 08/01/2026 22:40

Of course spreadable butter lives in the fridge. Ours spreads absolutely fine. How cold is your fridge??
