Angry woman on plane, Was we BU?

7 hour flight with DH and DS(4). As soon as seatbelt lights went off DH fully reclined exhausted DSs seat so he could sleep. The woman behind snapped at DH to put the seat back up as drinks would be coming around soon. DH said no as drinks currently not being served. She called him a selfish twat to her OH.
Drinks/snacks start coming around. Woman tells DH to put the seat back up. DH put the seat back up half way so to not wake DS. She tells him to put it fully up. He tells her DS is sleeping. Her OH then tells her to speak to steward which she does. Steward asks DH to put the seat back up - he tells her DS is sleeping. I tell him to just put it back up, he again says DS is sleeping. Air Steward starts getting pissed off, I snap at DH to put the bloody seat up. He does so reluctantly and DS does not wake.

Once everything is cleared away he puts the seat fully back again. The woman complains that he’s doing that out of badness because “the kid” is still asleep. Her OH confirms that yes, DH is a twat.

My take on it is that both were being unreasonable at different times. My sister however says this was all on DH.

Flew recently and there were signs up saying seats should not be reclined during meals. Otherwise, I think you can recline whenever you like. It doesn't say anywhere that you shouldn't. If someone reclines in front of me, I just recline mine too?

which airline never seen this

Pashmina67 · 08/01/2026 22:07

The planes seats are designed so the top reclines, tables can still be used, hes using a feature on a seat hes paid for, callibg him a twat i would have snored ignoring them all.
I had one once my partner and 8 year old we had the front row as we got there 8 year old exitidly jumped near the window (hes so quiet and well behaved any conflict made him unconfortable) anyway behind us sat 3 women who looked stuck in their seats when Nora Batty says we should have got them seats much more room for us, i bet the brat will be jumping up and down all flight. I turned round and said im gonna say this to you once wind your neck in and do not call my son a brat, he hasnt responded with anything as he? Like mummy are they the 3 little pigs? My son sat and coloured in a book the whole flight as we got up he said have a nice holiday Miss, she then said i get a bit cranky but you were as good as gold

This is why I don't fly economy

Unfortunately I have no choice. I’m usually flying on behalf of my university and they have strict rules about what we can spend. It has to be economy as (understandably) we can’t be spending student fees on business class flights!

nomoremsniceperson · 08/01/2026 22:12

I can understand OP's confusion here. I've always been small with short legs so being behind a reclined seat has never bothered me, and it never affected me using the table too badly either, so it never occurred to me that the person behind me would mind my seat being reclined. I learned from an online discussion that this isn't the case and that many people have a big problem with it, so now I only recline my seat at night when everyone's seat is reclined/nobody's eating (I may have once reclined my seat to deliberately annoy a noisy obnoxious kid who kept playing the same repetitive game on his ipad without turning the sound down).

But if a person isn't bothered personally by the seat in front being reclined it can be hard to realise that other people might not feel the same way, and therefore a very angry reaction might seem OTT and unprovoked.

Being pedantic here, but I've been on overnight flights that have boarded quite late (eg 10pm). Are you saying I should be waiting until the inevitable/frankly pointless dinner service ends at midnight before I'm allowed to recline and get some kip?

Agreed ... and that's a point I raised earlier with reference to what a lot of passengers do on late Long Haul departures, especially on shortish longhaul over night sectors such as JFK or BOS to LHR.

There was no absolute rule/policy on this where I worked (certainly when I was active), mainly to allow some flexibility.

Exactly! All this talk of the rules being no reclining until food and drinks are served is bullshit, this may be what you personally think the rules are, or should be, but it isn't actually the case and an actual air steward confirmed that earlier in the thread. Sure it's considerate to not recline until food is served but it isn't mandatory, if I'm boarding a flight at 10pm then I will be reclining as soon as I want in order to sleep, I'm not waiting around for everyone to be served, then to have eaten and then have their trays cleared away - on a large plane flying long haul this process can take a couple of hours as there can be over 500 passengers.

PixieTales · 08/01/2026 22:17

They are right DH is a twat.

Jamesblonde2 · 08/01/2026 22:17

OP would you want the person in front of you to recline on you, even without drinks, for the full journey? Or do you not think it reduces the space you have?

ThreeSixtyTwo · 08/01/2026 22:24

So DH reclined the child's seat shortly before drinks were served so the child could sleep better. When the other passenger pointed out the drinks were coming, he said "they are not here yet", and when they came he said "but he is sleeping now"... the other passenger just couldn't win in his eyes, could she?

I am not sure about the reclining etiquette for all cases, but I'd say to at least wait after the drinks and meals and.

you need to pay for a higher class seat if you want to recline. other than when the cabin lights are dimmed … nobody wants tray tables rammed into them! After drinks / food service though and if the seatbelt signs are off, that’s the time to recline in economy

Shedeboodinia · 08/01/2026 22:28

What time was the flight?
Really there is a time for reclining. Its after all drinks and meals have been served and then there is a long stretch where everyone is relaxing and/or sleeping.
Although I wouldnt have called your DH a selfish twat. I might have thought him a twat though.

UEB don't even think twice, of course. The ones netting the 6-figure salaries who could quite easily afford a first-class ticket out of their own pockets.

I have never reclined my seat except long haul night flights when everyone reclines, but I thought you couldn’t really complain if people
do recline.

True!

Your sister is right. Your DH is a selfish entitled pig ignorant twat who thinks the world revolves around him.

Next time you fly, ensure your dh has the seat behind DC. You can recline the seat and not cause any issues to anyone, as it clearly wouldn't be an issue for your DH to have his space encroached on for 7 hours.

Actually we do this and we pay to pick our seats so we can get ones with either noone in front or behind. I fly a lot and am quite particular about seating in airplanes.
Saying that I once slept on the floor underneath the seats on a long haul from asia when I was in a row of three with my two kids, they fell asleep across the three seats and i was so tired I squeezed myself under the seats and slept there until the air stewardess made me move myself out and I had to squeeze myself out from under there while navigating the arms and legs of my kids hanging down. It was a very, very long night .

Soontobe60 · 08/01/2026 22:37

PhuckTrump · 08/01/2026 17:34

You should really only be reclining during an overnight flight, and even then after the meal service.

Why? Personally I recline my seat as soon as possible because I suffer terribly with cramp when my hips are bent at 90 degrees. If the person behind me asked me to put my seat up at mealtime I would, but I’d put it back down as soon as the trays were collected.
The tables in the backs of the seats are designed so that they are still useable if the seat is reclined. I guess if you’re really fat said table might be too near to ones tummy for comfort though.

Most airlines have reduced the pitch of their seats and 2” is now standard. That’s the top of the seat being 2” nearer to the passenger’s face behind. The whole seat doesn’t move, you still have the same legroom.

Lifesd · 08/01/2026 22:49

So rude I hate people who recline seats in economy I honestly just wish they wouldn’t let people - it makes marginal diff to comfort and you always get people like your DH taking the piss.

Tiswa · 08/01/2026 22:50

Yes and it pretty much renders the use of the screen

and with those touchscreens how does it work you can play games on them (chess who wants to be a millionaire etc) and they move a lot when in recline

TokyoSushi · 08/01/2026 22:51

Yes you was BU, very much so.

Chiefangel · 08/01/2026 22:51

Did you really need to post on here to find out that yes, your husband is indeed a twat. I would have been kicking the fuck out of his seat if I had been sat behind him.
