I refuse to click the link but:

  • she was reasonable to pay for two seats if she needed them
  • toddler’s parent would have been reasonable to ask to use the spare seat
  • woman reasonable to say no
  • anyone shaming the woman for saying no without offering her a refund for the second seat absolutely unreasonable
HoLeeFuk · 07/01/2026 12:09

Why are you reading something you have to apologise for reading?

I’d seen the story elsewhere and googled for a link I could share. I know lots of MNers don’t like clicking on Daily Mail links, and the other ones I tried had too many ads and popups.

Not even a question really, she needed two seats, she paid for two seats. The mum paid for one seat and wanted two seats, if you want two seats pay for two seats.

EmpressaurusKitty · 07/01/2026 12:15

The woman was NBU. She did the considerate thing by buying two seats & the mother was a CF.

KimberleyClark · 07/01/2026 12:16

Just amazes me how many people don’t plan ahead in this situation, and then expect people who have done so to accommodate them. So entitled.

The story has been circulating for a while.

This is why the idiots who film and post stuff online should stop it. Lives are being ruined by these videos, usually with half a story and being being branded with false allegations.

Celestialmoods · 07/01/2026 12:17

If the woman was clearly using the two seats she had paid for, the toddlers parents shouldn’t even have asked. The Cheeky fuckers should pay for their own child to have a seat if they want one.

SoSoLong · 07/01/2026 12:18

She was within her rights, I don't see who's shamed her though? The CF mother gave her dirty looks, oh well...

It wasn’t a spare seat though, because it had been paid for. I’m guessing the mother wasn’t planning to reimburse the lady.

Passaggressfedup · 07/01/2026 12:20

Couldn't it have been a win win situation? Surely she didn't sit across both seats fully, she just wanted to spray a bit without it being uncomfortable. An 18 months old would have only used 2/3rd of the seat closer to his mum so both could have been accommodated.

Ultimately though, that seat was paid by one person, so her decision.

KimberleyClark · 07/01/2026 12:21

The mother got cabin crew involved, they asked the woman if she would give up the seat as well. Which, if she had paid for it, they shouldn’t have.

I can only imagine the toddler's mum didn't know the woman had purchased the second seat. She was just kind of semi encroaching onto it and she thought it might be free, and an ideal place for the toddler if obese person only uses a bit of the extra seat? Obviously she was wrong and of course the obese person shouldn't be shamed for refusing.

Guess they are apologising because the Guardian readers on here HATE the Mail 😂

Sartre · 07/01/2026 12:23

Crazy. The woman paid for both seats so they were hers to use as she wished. It would be the same if someone paid for two train seats, even if it was literally just to sit alone and put a bag there.

That is certainly not my definition of a win-win situation! Where is the win for the woman?

x2boys · 07/01/2026 12:49

ThecToddler mum was very cheeky snd shouldn't ask and certainly shouldn't involve the cabin crew to try and shame the Obese woman, the women paid for two seats both for her comfort and so wouldnt encroach on fellow passengers seat.

I would have refused as well. The whinger was a cf and should have got her kid it's own seat.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 07/01/2026 12:52

If she hadn’t have bought two seats she would have been criticised.

If mum wants two seats the acceptable thing is to buy two seats.

Mum is being massively unreasonable and tight.

Dollymylove · 07/01/2026 13:10

In that situation I might have said the CF mother could have the seat for the toddler if she was prepared to reimburse the full cost.
Otherwise no she can naff off

surreygirly · 07/01/2026 13:15

She paid for 2 seats
The lady with a child needs to do the same if she wants 2 seat

Passaggressfedup · 07/01/2026 13:15

No to be verbally abused by someone who instead might been very greatful and turn out to be pleasant. Who knows maybe she would have offered to pay half of the seat or buy her a drink.

5128gap · 07/01/2026 13:22

The woman was completely reasonable. She'd paid twice to accommodate her own body without impinging on anyone else. Which was plenty considerate enough without having to shove up and sit next to a toddler to be even more accommodating.

KitsyWitsy · 07/01/2026 13:25

Did the toddler not have its own seat? I am confused why it would need someone else's? Surely the mum bought tickets for her and her child together etc?

Flying is so bloody stressful.

Its a long time since I flew anywhere but it used to because child under two could sit on a parents knee?
