Claire's are going into administration.

Just wondered what happened. Where are the people who shopped in there going instead.

They will be no ear piercing if they've all gone shopping online??

Was just going to say that. Would a reputable jeweller do a babies ears? I know there’s no law against it but I can’t imagine the posh one I had my teenagers done at admitting a baby.

One where we went was for 8 years & over and only if the kids were happy to go ahead

BillieWiper · 06/01/2026 16:28

Superdrug do it. Accessorize do it. Both with guns if you're not fussed by that.

But yeah I don't think anyone's going to be weeping at its disappearance.

santasbaubles · 06/01/2026 16:33

Claire’s has been an absolute rip-off for years. They charge a fortune for the kind of rubbish people buy for pennies on SHEIN. It’s all plastic tat that will end up in landfill. No great loss IMO.

The end of the Claire's ear piercing service is the best thing to come out of the whole debacle.

People at my secondary school in the noughties used to brag about shoplifting from Claire’s. Maybe they couldn’t turn a profit

I got mine pierced at Superdrug recently, by the woman who also threads eyebrows. It was fine. At least their gun won't have been used on genitalia in the previous appointment 🤣

Do you really think they reuse needles at a piercing place 👀

AndreaMarvell · 06/01/2026 16:43

I had my ears pierced there when I was 14 because I missed the bus and had half an hour to wait for the next one and I was bored. One of the holes is not straight through, it goes at a bit of an angle so I have problems getting earrings in it even now.

EmeraldRoulette · 06/01/2026 16:46

I'm surprised they didn't go under before

Between everything online, and the fact that there seem to be tattoo and piercing places everywhere, I'm just surprised

Sorry for the staff.

TeaAndTattoos · 06/01/2026 16:50

Good about time to about time people stopped going there and getting their ears pierced by an untrained teenager with a piercing gun.

What are you talking about? 😂

HugglesAndSnuggles · 06/01/2026 16:56

I had my ears pierced at Claire’s and they pierced one of them in slightly the wrong place. Consequently, it’s too painful to wear an earring in that ear for much longer than about two hours and drop earrings are definitely out. Shame really.

It's terrible for people to lose their jobs and it's rough on the high street economics, but I don't feel there's any surprise when a chain goes into administration – it's always somewhere everyone knows it struggling, and it's not always online or 'big chain' competition. They are largely always stores that were of their time that just haven't been able to keep up with the next demographic of consumers. Claire's and River Island are all still stuck in 2005. WHSmiths didn't know what it was – a bookseller, a newsagent, a stationery supplier (luckily they are still in airports and stations where they serve best).

NotQuiteUsual · 06/01/2026 17:03

My kids love to look around Claires then exclaim at the high prices and tell me how they can get the same elsewhere cheaper. It's a whole routine they seem to really enjoy. They'll be sad it's going.

Edited

I got mine done there as a kid and one of my holes is wonky too, so fiddly to get the earring in.

I can understand why people used to take their kids to a sparkly girly shop instead of a tattoo shop full of skulls and body parts. (And before the internet we didn’t know piercing guns are bad). But now there are lots of options in between so I’m surprised Claire’s has lasted this long

Someone I know got her kids ears done at Claire’s £90 is cost her!!!! £90!!!!! This was going back maybe 3 or 4 years too so god knows what it costs now. And they got infected and had to be removed.
I paid £25 at the same time for my daughter at the local piercers. I can’t believe people were still going there at that price. I thought it was cheap and cheerful but it was absolute extortion

Ear piercing starts at £30 it thereabouts. It completely depends what earrings you want in. So she obviously chose the expensive option

Fussyeater321 · 06/01/2026 17:49

I wanted some tiny rubber bands for DD hair. £6 from Claire’s. Turned around quickly and went to The Works next door and purchased double the amount for 79p (loom bands!)

purpleme12 · 06/01/2026 17:51

Last I heard Claire's were shutting down some stores but keeping loads open. Since the original announcement of going into administration.

Has there been news since then then?

fabulousx · 06/01/2026 18:28

It`s not a shop i go to,the crap they sell you can get cheaper else where.
Its a tween teen shop tbh.

If any piercer is using a piercing gun to pierce your Fanny then they want closing down regardless of cleanliness and no reputable, proper, piercing business will re-use a piercing needle either.

Bragging about stealing from Claires is like the poplar opposite of a Mumsnet stealth brag.

It used to be the shop for tweens and teens. Now most tweens and teens find it deeply uncool and cheap.

I also got my ears pierced at the hairdressers.

I did too, with a gun when I was 7.

Ten years later, while training as a hairdresser, I was taught how to use a piercing gun.

Back in the 80s I don’t recall there being any other option for piercings. It was either at a hair salon or jewellers with a gun.
