To complain over 50p?

inkyspells · 05/01/2026 10:25

The snow isn’t the best here and I’m full of cold so last night I ordered a Asda order through uber.
The pies I ordered were out of date by 2 months (November 2025) and the mash was open.
So I contacted Uber and they have refunded me £2.50.
The pies were £3.00 and the mash £1.99
The mash should be okay to use so I won’t mow but why £2.50 ? When the item was £3.00

Uber said the max we can refund is £2.50

Would you complain over 50p ?

I'd want an explanation about why they provided 2 months out of date pies and open mash more than I'd want the 50p.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 05/01/2026 10:34

Why would you use the mash if it's opened 🤢

aliceinawonderland · 05/01/2026 10:38

They should be refunding you £5 and I might argue for double that for the inconvenience. You essentially were left without a meal that evening

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 05/01/2026 10:43

Where had they got hold of pies that were 2 months out of date? I'd be concerned about the Asda itself as well...

Coffeeishot · 05/01/2026 10:46

If asda is selling out of date food and danaged packaging isnt that more important, than 50p?

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 05/01/2026 10:50

I wouldn't complain as such, but I'd tell them they need to refund the full cost of the two items. It can't be right that their refund is capped at an arbitrary £2.50.

StrawberrySquash · 05/01/2026 10:54

I don't know what the system is for dealing with problems given that you have both Asda and Uber in the mix. I suspect Uber will just claim they are the middle man. But there should be a system for dealing with problems past £2.50.

readystdygo · 05/01/2026 10:58

I couldn't be bothered to waste my time to be honest.

midsomermurderer · 05/01/2026 11:01

Why would you eat something that arrived opened thats rank. We have an Asda petrol station near us and you have to be so careful with the dates on things, often you grab something quickly and then see the they are 4 or 6 weeks out of date, its criminal.

randomchap · 05/01/2026 11:04

Your local council might be interested.

Is it a "use by" or "best before" date

Bluddyellfire · 05/01/2026 11:05

I've had groceries delivered by Uber that looked like they'd been kicked round the storeroom but I suppose the upshot is that I could have got off my arse, gone to the shop and carried it home as carefully as I liked. If it was me in your situation I'd be on to the supermarket about sending out of date/ damaged goods pronto, not Uber. Supermarket staff are responsible for both stock control and picking/ packing for Uber, so it wasn't Uber or the individual driver who had any say in any of it.

HoLeeFuk · 05/01/2026 11:09

Lots of separate issues here.

You can't expect a delivery driver to check each item. It's Asda who are responsible for making sure they don't sell out of date / damaged goods.

But also bullshit that Uber won't refund more than £2.50 in any circumstances.

I'd be turning my complaint to Asda.

randomchap · 05/01/2026 11:10

Who did you pay for the goods? They are the ones you have a contract with

HashtagShitShop · 05/01/2026 11:17

I would report it to the councils environmental health. For a period of several months our asda had food all over in every department that was massively out of date. In certain cases like the Polish meats it was 4 months.

You had to be really careful to ensure that the food you bought was edible and couldn't do an online shop as you'd be sending a good 50 percent back.

It was during the time that things were really bad with the brothers who had bought it and according to my neighbour who worked there, morale was super low so I half wonder if it was too few staff and actively not looking to get the company fined (as did happen because of the amount of stores this was happening with)

HideousKinky · 05/01/2026 11:17

No way would I consume something that was not sealed

inkyspells · 05/01/2026 11:27

It’s ASDA who should be refunding you £5

randomchap · 05/01/2026 11:44

It's best before, so not a use by date. Not illegal to sell. However awful customer service

EmeraldShamrock000 · 05/01/2026 11:47

They should refund you. I learned this lesson with Tesco home delivery, staff wouldn’t check the best before dates, now I add a note on every product, copy and pasting, pick furthest best before date.

NameChangePoP · 05/01/2026 11:51

I had this with Uber once for a similar thing. The initial refund is automated, use the chat feature to speak with a human - they will refund it properly.

yikesss · 05/01/2026 11:54

I would argue even 1p if it was uber tbh they are sooo useless

Topaz82 · 05/01/2026 14:31

I used Uber to deliver a McDonalds at the end of last year. I didn’t realise (more fool me) that the 2 hot chocolates and the chocolate milkshakes had tipped over inside the bag. Assume it was as he got them out his bag on the bike otherwise I’d have noticed they were wet as he passed them me. I put them down, gave him the PIN number and then he left. I picked up the bag which was now saturated and the entire contents dropped out the bottom of the bag and onto my floor.

Contacted Uber and they refunded 87p! That’s not even the cost of one drink or the inconvenience of cleaning the drinks out my carpet. When I tried to complain to Uber to ask for a refund covering the drinks they kept saying they had refunded already (87p) and the case was closed.

It’s put me off and I haven’t ordered again as it’s such poor customer service.

As others have said - I’d be concerned why you had out of date items and damaged items. Good luck and I hope you have more success than I had with them.

Rosealea · 05/01/2026 14:33

Don't be so ridiculous 🙄

CandyColouredEggshells · 06/01/2026 08:45

I had food delivered by uber once when working and it was inedible, cold and actually wet (the driver said he got the wrong address and it was raining 😩) I did get a refund but Uber were so quick to apologise and issue a partial refund, they didn’t even ask me for photos, without saying how much and then I received an email saying they’d refunded something like £2.50. I had to keep messaging and saying I was unhappy and they did do it eventually. I think they’re so used to people trying it on their initial response is have £2.50
and go away.

Maigllolo · 06/01/2026 13:40

Yes, it's the principle! Plus, they really should be compensating you for their incompetence (and potential food poisoning if you hadn't looked)!
