For those who have had scabies…

Snoopypie · 04/01/2026 21:08

My husband thinks it’s just me overreacting, but it’s 7 weeks now and treatments have not worked after the initial one as he isn’t doing all the protocol . Pretty sure the dog has it too and he says I’m imagining it, ffs she’s scratching and shaking her ears so much (I’ve made an apt with her at dermo vet this week). Husband in denial that he has it, luckily dermo wants to see us both when I go in 2 weeks.
I’m so down, genuinely depressed and avoiding people , really worried about returning to work too next week ….am I over reacting or can people relate? Is it possible to live a normal life and be happy with scabies?

You are absolutely NOT overreacting! I had it for a year because medical professionals kept misdiagnosing and then treatment didn't always work. I remember all the washing at high temps, ironing everything in sight, etc. It was soul destroying 😫

200skies · 04/01/2026 21:19

I've just remembered the instense itching keeping me awake at night too. Shudder... Your husband is being a dick.

Snoopypie · 04/01/2026 21:53

@200skiesI knew my husband would not be supportive, hoping dermo in 2 weeks will talk sense.
Did you still manage to go to work and see your friends though?
Did you have any pets or other household members get it?

How did you get rid of it eventually?

Thank you for your reply, not seeing dermo for 2 weeks, gp told me 2x I went back I was clear 🙈and I’m so low, I feel hopeless- thank you for being lovely.

Derbac M Liquid is the best thing for it.

BadgernTheGarden · 04/01/2026 21:58

One treatment and it was gone, pets didn't get it.

I was about to post exactly this, I had it for a year too!
It's not an insignificant matter and also highly contagious!

Snoopypie · 04/01/2026 22:02

@Jadedpersuaded
How did you get rid of it please?

Did any other family members or friends get it?

Did you keep going to work?

So many questions, I feel so desperate, if I was told I’d die tomorrow I’d be happy!

You poor thing! I managed to give it to the guy I was seeing but didn't have any pets at the time. I went to work and saw friends as usual because for a long time docs told me it was just dry skin, eczema, etc. I did feel very down about the whole thing though.

It was 20 years ago so can't remember how I finally got rid of it but there was a lot of effort involved in religiously using the cream, boiling washing sheets, ironing all clothes, etc.

Good luck getting rid. One day soon this will all just be a bad memory 💐

Please don’t panic. It will get treated and you will be ok. I had it when I was a student at Durham almost 30 years ago. The joys of living in halls. It was treated with an ointment as far as I can recall. It was unpleasant and incredibly itchy, I had little red bumps around my hands especially. I don’t remember a lot about it tbh .

GarlicSound · 04/01/2026 22:25

Your husband's being a bit of a twat, isn't he. I'm looking forward to the day he starts itching!

I had them as a student, the little bastards are horrible - and I gave them to my boyfriend 😢 Finally got rid of them after about four weeks, when we devoted a single day to treating ourselves first thing (and dressing in new clothes!) then wearing long rubber gloves to pack EVERYTHING in bin liners for an interminable laundry marathon and vacuuming several times.

It was the second time we'd done this. The first time, we weren't quite as thorough.

Makingsenseofitall · 04/01/2026 22:27

I got rid of it wot ivermectin. Had to go to a private dermatologist to get it. If yoh are in London I can recommend them.

Namechangedasouting987 · 04/01/2026 22:42

My DS2 brought this home at Xmas. I then caught it too. Went private for ivermectin oral tabs for all of us, incl DS1, DH and DD. We all took the tabs and did permethrin cream on the same day. I then washed all towels, bed sheets and clothes at 60 deg, and used a laundrette to tumble dry towels and sheets on hot for 3 days in a row. I hoovered all the mattresses, and sofas etc and used plastic dust sheets on sofa, armchair and bin bags over dining chairs. We then repeated it again 7 days later and repeated all the washing. Between treatments I washed mine and DS2s clothes and towels everyday at 60deg and tumble dried.
Our last treatment was Tues (7 days later to kill hatchlings). We are both still itchy, but it is improving. Itching can last up to 4 weeks after treatment. DS2 also got red bumps yesterday which can be post scabies syndrome. He had it for about 8 weeks before being diagnosed (his GP at uni ruled scabies out 5 weeks before he came home, ffs).
We have to wait now to see if we get any more burrows. If we do I will be trying Derbac M.
It is so important everyone treats together. I had to really bully DH into cooperating.
It has cost us a fortune as ivermectin is really expensive to buy privately. But i was struggling with NHS as both DS reg elsewhere and they just kept fobbing me off with over the counter stuff.

DS2 gone back to uni tonight with strict instructions to stay fully clothed, wash bedding on hot regularly and stay away from anyone itchy. He is never coming home again with it.
Absolute nightmare.

Have you treated your footwear? Sounds silly, but apparently quite a few cases of apparent treatment failure is due to people forgetting (or not being told to) isolate their footwear, no matter how careful they have been about boil-washing clothes/towels/bedding.

Snoopypie · 04/01/2026 23:01

@DarkEyedSailor sadly we don’t have it in Australia, I’ve bought some on the internet, hoping it can come through customs!

Oh good point. I think I had some around my ankles. Your husband needs to take it more seriously op. Hope you get rid of it soon.

I have enough shoes to wear a different pair each day of the week and leave worn ones in the garage, but Twonk of a husband doesn’t do anything like this.

Your husband will soon change his tune if it reaches his genitals!
Everyone in the household needs to follow the instructions scrupulously. You CAN get rid of the little bastards.

@GarlicSoundhe really is, he’s hardly speaking to me as I’m so stressed and it’s come to a head today- think he’s going to leave me.

I do, husband doesn’t.

Treated it with lotion ALL over, and DD. She was about 8, we did it together.

Took 3 days clothes and put them through a hot wash. Also the bedclothes. Spent 3 days in a single room, everything else quarantined - was told they can't live for more than 48 hours off humans.

Every day washed the bedclothes, applied lotion ALL over for 10 minutes before showering. Then wore specifically cleaned clothes every day, dirty clothes placed into bin bags to quarantine.

We didn't have pets.

Minimise your contact with everything, including toys. Live in one room and quarantine the others for 3 days. Quarantine anything you touch for at least 3 days.

I completely agree, the only way of getting him on board is if he gets it on his privates.
I love your reply, it’s actually made me smile whilst sat in a car park in tears. 💕
