For those who have had scabies…

My husband thinks it’s just me overreacting, but it’s 7 weeks now and treatments have not worked after the initial one as he isn’t doing all the protocol . Pretty sure the dog has it too and he says I’m imagining it, ffs she’s scratching and shaking her ears so much (I’ve made an apt with her at dermo vet this week). Husband in denial that he has it, luckily dermo wants to see us both when I go in 2 weeks.
I’m so down, genuinely depressed and avoiding people , really worried about returning to work too next week ….am I over reacting or can people relate? Is it possible to live a normal life and be happy with scabies?

I had it years ago when I was in 6th form, it’s awful and the itching was so bad at night that I was losing enough sleep to affect my schoolwork and had one of my teachers asking if everything was ok because I didn’t seem myself lately!
It took about two weeks to improve after the treatment.
It’s definitely not something you live with!

I worked in a care home and got it (and husband at the time) Benzyl_benzoate helped for our residents and us.

Snoopypie · 06/01/2026 02:58

@BornslipperyHow long did it take you to get rid of please?

Hi All, me again!
For those that my questions annoy please just scroll on or block me if you can.

Anyway for those of you who understand the mental torture of this condition how on earth do you keep on top of the environmental contamination, especially with the family ?

Did any of you clear it without constantly vacuuming, wiping things down and sitting on covers (to wash each day) .
of course treatment day protocol is essential, I’m doing 3 loads of washing at least each day and I do vacuum.

I’m exhausted and paranoid- off to GP tomorrow to get a referral to a psychologist to help me live a life with this mentally and physically exhausting condition- 7 weeks of mental hell.

Seeing dermatologist next week.

@Snoopypie yes thanks. It really properly worked. Some itchiness for a while after (some of us more than others) but all clear still. Have you seen the dermatologist yet ?

Snoopypie · 16/01/2026 02:05

@Namechangedasouting987 How are you going now your son is back st uni?
The only 2 other cases of scabies I’ve heard about from people I know are both friends of their older children at uni ….I’m 50!

We seem to be clear. The oral meds plus cream sem to have done the trick (plus all the laundry and cleaning). DS under strict instructuions not to come home again if it comes back! But he knows what to do now. Its just over 2 weeks since 2nd dose and his itching is calming down slowly.

Snoopypie · 16/01/2026 10:25

Derbac M Liquid is the best thing for it.

@DarkEyedSailorjust got some Derbac M delivered to Oz from an online pharmacy (can’t buy it here) , can you use more than one bottle on each person per treatment as we are big people in my family and not sure one bottle will be enough to cover us.

There was no leaflet - only information on the bottle which didn’t cover this.

Hoping you can help.
Thanks

I remember reading scabies can live in a bin outside for up to six months. We had to throw away shoes and although everything was in a carrier bag I did not disinfect the black bin for six months!

I am a bit anal and disinfect my black bin regularly ...

Namechangedasouting987 · 21/01/2026 07:54

Scabies cannot live off a human host for longer than about 72 hours. They suggest bagging up clothes for a week. Your bin is not a risk.
There is a lot of misinformation being pedalled on social media etc.

Swampthing55 · 21/01/2026 07:58

I had this in student halls. Painted myself yellow with my mum's help, washed clothes and got a new mattress. I don't recall it being a big deal, dealt with over a weekend

That is just not true. Scabies mites can't survive off the body for more than 48 hours. The only exception is in the case of crusted scabies where they could potentially live for up to a week, but only if they were inside a larger crusted flake of skin that's been shed. There is absolutely no way they could survive for 6 months in a bin. It's completely impossible.
