Shoes and bags from outside coming in, am I weird?

I don't allow people to walk around my house wearing shoes. When I get home I wipe the soles and edges of shoes clean before they get put away. I'd never go outside in slippers.

People spit, puke, wee and do God knows what else on the pavement not to mention what animals do and flick their leftover smoking paraphernalia on the floor.(Not animals for the last one)

I won't put bags on the ground at bus stops or train stations because of this either. I balance them on my knee and just hang on to them if waiting for public transport.

I'm told I'm odd, does anyone else do this? I don't want remnants of piss and puke, old pizzas and other stuff brought into the house.

Did you wash your shopping during Covid OP

I don’t have OCD at all and completely agree with you. Why would anyone want to bring outside dirt and germs from the ground inside Envy

I would always take my shoes off in someone else’s home and would expect the same in mine. I don’t know anyone who would have a problem with this or would find it weird

But why would your bag have these things on it? They are not airborne

My bag doesn't because I don't put it on the ground. But I see people who do.

I did at first - lots of my friends did - actually wiped things down with antivirus wipes but then thought it was pointless so stopped.

We are shoes off and I wouldn’t put bags that have been down outside on worktops. BUT that’s it. What exactly do you fear will happen if you don’t do this stuff OP. And do you have kids? I was brought up by an OCD parent and it was fucking miserable. Suggest you seek some help. And live somewhere where people eat their pizza not chuck it on the pavement. 👀

I do! My shoes are cleaned before going into the wardrobe. You are not alone!

I don't have kids. Neither do I live anywhere where people chuck pizza on the pavement. But they do in town around where I work. I really don't understand why I need help. Help for what? To gradually allow mucky shoes in my wardrobe? To get over the fear of placing my bag on the ground and get used to having it on my lap on the train? 🤮🤢🤢

I've never feared something would happen but I don't want things that have been on the ground outside in my house or car without cleaning for the reasons I've given. It's filthy.

There was a thread the other week about seeing a woman out shopping in a supermarket in pyjamas. Mumsnetters were saying how filthy it was because of bringing the outside in, and you don't roll around outside in your pyjamas. I don't think so anyway. Do they all need help too?

I never put my bag down on a floor anywhere either, nor do I wear shoes in my home. I don't clean them off apart from wiping them on the doormat. They go on a tray inside the door.

I don't think about what's underfoot outdoors. Taking off my shoes and keeping my (expensive) bags clean have become as habitual as washing my hands as soon as I take off my shoes.

LemonPenguin · 01/10/2026 02:50

Are your cats indoor cats? The particles of poo/wee/pizza/dirt that get on your shoes will be microscopic (unless you literally step in something gross in which case of course you’d wash them!). Other people don’t have these things building up in their houses just because they don’t wash their shoes every day. And most people clean their houses so any dirt would be regularly got rid of! You do you, obviously, but it’s an irrational worry!

Of course I don't and no it's not but the ground is filthy without actually treading in anything. I don't leave shoes on shoe racks or anything. They go back in the wardrobe. But not straight off the street they don't.

I NEVER put bags - personal, shopping or other - on the floor. (Especially if I know I may end up putting that same bag on my lap on the train etc). As a general rule, we don't wear shoes indoors - while it's an absolute no-no on carpet (stairs and upstairs), we're not militant with guests wearing shoes downstairs, where there's flooring, which can be easily cleaned afterwards. I don't clean the soles of my shoes BUT worn shoes do stay in the hall overnight/24 hours before being put away. All just basic hygiene to me.

To be honest I hate anything “outside” being inside my house! Including coats iv sat on public transport in etc! Nothing wrong with that

Tamtim · 01/10/2026 07:57

We’re not strictly shoes off although I’d like to be. Outdoor shoes indoors is gross. I also don’t put my bags down on the ground.
