Delivery driver woke us up at 0700 on a Sunday morning

A supermarket delivery driver crawled around the cul de sac for 5 minutes in his noisy vehicle then sat idling with whatever his radio was playing loudly.

I went to speak to him and he wasn’t allowed to deliver groceries to my neighbour until 0730 so sat outside my house waiting.

AIBU to have gone out and asked him to turn it all off/down?

Only asking as I did this and came back in to an angry teen saying he’s just doing his job etc. well he can do it more quietly and respectfully at this hour surely!? Now overthinking, should this be part of their training etc

Also pointless exercise as I’m wide awake now anyway 🤦🏼‍♀️

Not ideal. But at least you’re not at work at 7 on a Sunday morning.
I imagine the engine was idling to keep the heat on.

Inthefuturenow · 04/01/2026 08:30

I agree, it's your neighbour who is antisocial ordering a food delivery before 8 am on a Sunday. Not the drivers fault, he's just doing his job. I used to get annoyed at my neighbours getting late night deliveries when I was in bed as the vans had to stop outside my house.
Thankfully none of my current neighbours get their food deliveries at unsocial hours. I personally don't think supermarket deliveries before 8am on a weekend should even be possible!

Hufflemuff · 04/01/2026 08:32

I'd be fucked off too! Where we live theres an Asda van that does a 10.30pm food delivery that wakes up the whole street. He has radio blaring and it is so inconsiderate. I'd have gone out too, but im not waking myself up futher to go out and have a row.

dammit88 · 04/01/2026 08:34

I think you have a point about the radio but the engine I expect was to keep him warm as someone above said so I think yabu about that. We live in a 24 hr society these days so Sunday doesn’t mean a lot.

Bess91 · 04/01/2026 08:43

I don't think it's fair for those blaming the neighbours. If they need their shopping delivered, they need it delivered! It's perfectly possible for the driver to have done so without playing his music loudly.

Complain to the supermarket

This - there are rules about anti social noise levels on weekends (eg tradesmen can only work until 1pm on Sats and not on Sundays) precisely because of this. i would also drop a note to the neighbour saying that you totally understand that sometimes a 730am/Sunday delivery is necessary, but could they pop a note on their order to ask delivery drivers to be considerate of neighbours, give the early hour.

Notmyreality · 04/01/2026 08:54

1st world problem. He’s doing his job and 7 isn’t really that early for many and Sunday is no different.

TalulahJP · 04/01/2026 08:54

i too would complain to the supermarket.

it’s good that the driver was up early and ready to be on time but all the neighbours took the hit for that be being wakened half an hour which is unhelpful.

Nugg · 04/01/2026 08:56

oh I wasn’t rude but I did ask if he could drive off and return or at least turn it down/off. Engine was off by this time it was a really loud radio or similar.

He apologised and turns it down or off but also moved around the corner —probably to escape the bedraggled scary looking woman—

I don’t blame my neighbour for having their delivery at 0730 at all, if he had driven up and waited quietly then it’s not a problem.

we do have a regular 3-4 times a week neighbour collected in a builders pick-up that waits engine running at 0630. Whilst the noises grates as it’s early old diesel engine because I’m up and about or out with the dog it just makes me think ugh not again and why isn’t the neighbour ready for 0630!?!

I’m aware of this - I did say the fact it was my one day of not waking at 0500 for 8 days potentially clouded my judgement

I also had a neighbour who would come home early and sit talking on the phone through her speakers every morning. I opened my door in my dressing gown and glared until she stopped and she never did it again

I don't want to hear anyone's music outside my house, but before 9am would make me rage

MsGinaLinetti · 04/01/2026 09:07

He wasn't just doing his job. He was making unnecessary noise in the early hours.

Changename12 · 04/01/2026 09:18

I think food delivery drivers have to keep the engine on to keep the fridges/freezers working. I think your neighbour is being unreasonable having an early morning order on a Sunday.

Well Sunday is supposed to be different. Noisy building works are not allowed on a Sunday.

Pianoaholic · 04/01/2026 09:28

YANBU. If the delivery was for 7.30 I don't know why he turned up half an hour early.

My neighbour has deliveroo ALL the time and quite often the drivers bang on our door or window because they've got it wrong. It's annoying because they do it very loudly.
Once we had a (cold) packet of McDonald's left on our doorstep! Which DH nearly trod on when he left the house.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 04/01/2026 09:34

tripleginandtonic · 04/01/2026 07:51

Yabu. He was working.

I sometimes start work early in the morning. I don't put loud music on so all the house and neighbours can hear, I am as quiet as a mouse.

DonewhatIcando · 04/01/2026 09:38

@Nugg
YANBU
Its inconsiderate of him.
A similar situation led me to finding out my ex had a nickname for me, Princess Tippytoes!
Delivery driver used to turn up at 7am, I asked her not to deliver so early, she said she had a 2nd job to go to, it got heated, she got shirty with me and I mirrored her attitude.
Ex then said "ooh, Princess Tippytoes finally loses her cool"
I digress but YANBU

Isobel201 · 04/01/2026 10:08

The radio being on loud YABU, and I would have expected him to know the traffic conditions at that time in the morning and he would have known how long it would take to get there if they use google maps etc. So I don't get the whole turning up to early, but then I guess if he had turned up too late, the neighbour would have been annoyed too.

UniquePinkSwan · 04/01/2026 10:09

It’s very old fashioned to consider Sunday morning where you should hear no noise. Millions are out working. It’s just another day

itsthetea · 04/01/2026 10:13

If we want a 24*7 society that’s what will happen /

ThreeSixtyTwo · 04/01/2026 10:17

YANBU.

While different aspects are up to discussion, there was no need for the blasting radio.

And it must be ok to let people know they are this loud so they can do better.

The "he was just working crowd" is missing the point.

Are you saying that no one is allowed to be annoyed by things you consider minor? I don't understand what first world problem even means, what other kind of problems would we have? We aren't starving or in war zones

Are you never irritated by anything?

Of course. I’m irritated by pointless posts on MN for a start.

You sound unhinged! You heard his noisy vehicle arrive and crawl round the cul-de-sac. So basically you are blaming someone for having thr timerity to drive their vehicle outside your home at 7am?

HelpMeGetThrough · 04/01/2026 10:48

My elderly neighbour across the road would really piss you off. Gardening at 6:30am with Radio 4 going. That does include Sundays.

I’ll crank up the mower or hedge trimmer at 9.
