To feel so sad about getting rid of Christmas decorations

Powerups · 03/01/2026 21:30

Every year it’s the same, I spend all year looking forward to Christmas so much, planning my decorations and making it beautiful and so twinkly and festive. Every single room has the magic of Christmas,

I love how my home feels and looks at Christmas yet today have started packing it all away and feel so terrible, the excitement and twinkly lights are gone, my home feels bare and I feel really sad.

I do recognise that there are far worse things going on In the world and this is a bit trivial in the grand scheme of things but wondered if anyone else feels the same and any advice to help with the post Christmas blues?

We took ours down today, they did look lovely but I find it very satisfying to take the tree out, clear up the pine needles and make everything tidy again !

DappledThings · 03/01/2026 21:34

Keep them up for longer if you want to. It's only 10 Lords a Leaping today so 2 days till 12th night. And keeping lights up till Candelmas in February is a thing too if you want it to be.

billiongulls · 03/01/2026 21:38

No, I think of the year as a cycle, and enjoy moving to the next bit. The next few months are quiet and orderly, then the days get longer, spring comes, more out door life, etc. Mind you, actual Christmas is probably my last favourite bit, I love the time after Christmas, which I see as a nesting time.

This.

Apparently more and more people are keeping at least lights up.

I’ve taken mine down today and usually agree but this year I’ve left some jars filled with fairy lights out and got some pots with bulbs in them to put out. I find replacing decorations with something new like the green bulbs stops the house from looking as bare

NoIdontwatchbloodytraitors · 03/01/2026 21:41

Keep your twinkies up all year, I do

UncannyFanny · 03/01/2026 21:42

I hate the dark nights so like to leave the lights up but they’ll be coming down tomorrow. I’ve had them up since mid December and we have to move forward.

LavenderBlue19 · 03/01/2026 21:42

I leave the fairy lights up - we have some around the bookcase and some on the stairs, and they're lovely when it's still dark in January and early Feb. The light picks up from mid-Feb, and then they can come down.

JaceLancs · 03/01/2026 21:43

I always buy myself a big bouquet of flowers,
light candles and book a holiday!
Never fails to cheer me up

Jeschara · 03/01/2026 21:43

I am taking mine down Monday, the tree is over 7 feet and the best I have ever had. The candles the cards and fire place add to the ambience. I do feel sad to be taking it down.
I keep the tree's in the past in my back garden for a month and with cold weather in Jan/Feb it looks lovely outside so I get to enjoy it longer. I have to say though when it's all down snd I have done a deep clean it does look lovely and restful. I then burn lovely candles to make the room look Cosy

Iknowdino · 03/01/2026 21:43

Ahh me too!! The tree still looks lovely and I enjoy having the lovely lights and all the pretty decorations around. Our house is pretty souless without Christmas decs! We have nothing fun around. Also.... Thought it a good idea to put 500 snowflake stickers on every window in the house and they need picking off, so sad about that cos it's gonna take ages and I cba

PolkaDotPorridge · 03/01/2026 21:44

Ours is all coming down tomorrow and I feel you. I’m sad that tonight is the last night of our beautiful tree BUT I am looking forward to a good tidy up afterwards.

thatsmyhouse · 03/01/2026 21:44

I feel the same. This evening is the last evening I'll have them all up and I do feel down about it, but it's all mixed in with having to go back to work where I'm not particularly happy and nostalgia about children growing up - amazing as that is and lovely as this Christmas has been. I do think I'll probably feel better when I've actually done it though tomorrow and this hanging on until the last possible moment (has to be done before work on Monday) makes me worse. I may rethink my strategy next year...

I love taking the tree down when its ready to go and doing a big clean up.
I have fairy lights up all year that will be turned on through the dark nights, the fairy light batteries are all refreshed when the tree comes down plus we have candles out.
I also have a big vase of flowers where the tree was (vase is wrapped in lights).

dudsville · 03/01/2026 21:46

Can you settle in to new traditions? New lights and decorations to see in the winter months? The end of the Christmas and NYE season isn't spring, it's winter, and that can mean something to celebrate too! And after that we can celebrate spring, which doesn't need lights.

Icantremembermyusername · 03/01/2026 21:46

We put the tree and house decorations away on New Years Eve, but kept up the porch and conservatory fairy lights. They’ll be up until I come home from work without it being properly dark.

Garroty · 03/01/2026 21:47

I'm the same OP. The rooms always look so bare and dark and it's a stark reminder that the season is over.

Things that help me:

  • lighting a candle with a lovely fresh scent
  • big house clean
  • fresh flowers
  • keeping the lighting nice - lamps, candles etc
Applewatch · 03/01/2026 21:48

I have fairy lights in my hall that I keep up all year round. Our hall lights are really bright and I don’t like having them on when in the sitting room as they intrude on that space but we need something on to
stop it being dark and miserable. A few years ago I just stopped taking the Christmas fairy lights down and we use them all year in the evenings. They give a nice soft light to the hall and look pretty.

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 03/01/2026 21:49

We leave lights, nativity sets, and garlands up until Candlemas, by which time Spring is on the threshold. Beautifully twinkly and cosy until then.

Father Christmas sort of decorations come down. As does the tree (small sitting room!), but we keep some needles for cooking.

user665178392470 · 03/01/2026 21:51

It’d be a jolly long dark winter without Christmas wouldn’t it?!
Both our DC will be off to uni this autumn, so I’m dreading the empty house feeling I know is coming. Although they’ll be home for next Christmas I’m sure, it’ll never be quite the same either, times are changing and taking the decorations down has got to me this year when normally I’ve been glad to get things tidy again. Daft really!

pizzaHeart · 03/01/2026 21:53

We dont have much extra space so I don’t mind to get rid of all Christmassy extras. We usually put the tree up in the middle of December and by 5th January I’ve had enough. But I can see your point of view - Christmas tree, lights and other decorations do make a difference.
Can you leave lights and get something nice for the house? A few cushions here and there or a new vase.
And maybe put your tree up a bit earlier next year?

BooksandCats123 · 03/01/2026 21:54

I don’t mind taking the trees down, it feels bigger and I don’t mind not having it up.
I really don’t want to wash off my snow window though, my husband did it and it’s beautiful. I keep catching people taking pictures of it when they walk past my house.
I’m leaving it up abit longer, I posted it when he did it but I’ll share it again.

I used to feel like you but now I have so many fairy lights I barely notice the loss of the tree! Buy lights for year round, including garden fairy lights for summer and you'll get over it I promise.

Blarn · 03/01/2026 22:00

My lights will be staying up longer as its cold and dark and they cherr things up. My tree is a thing of beauty though and I always hate taking it down. The needles are really dropping now though so has to be done.

I really relate to Bridget Jones when she is described as eating cut price christmas chicanes next to her tree, watching Eastenders and trying to pretend it's the Christmas special. Everything going back to normal in January always feels sad.
