to ask for my own hotel room on business trip?

Hi. Work for a huge corporate company with a conference taking place in a few weeks.
travel will be the day before, by train, and staying over for training the following day travelling back that night.
work expects us to share a room with someone, and 90% sure it’ll be someone I’ve never met before. Even if it was a colleague, I still would refuse.
AIBU to have emailed them to request them to book me a separate room?
I didn’t give an excuse, only because I feel like I don’t need an excuse for my own room?

Absolutely not unreasonable. I’m surprised companies still do this.

Thanks you! I thought the same. But the communication regarding the trip initially did specifically say on a room sharing basis! Which I already explicitly told my manager I would not be doing.

Good grief. Unless you are 12 years old and on a school trip of course you shouldn’t be sharing. And even the 12 year olds would get a say in who they share with!

MiddleAgedDread · 03/01/2026 19:09

Hell no, that is not acceptable! I wouldn’t even share with colleagues I know well.

That’s how I feel! It is all women but still!

Nope nope nope. I would not be sharing unless my colleague was my sister, my best friend, or my partner (and ok, my kids). Sharing with a colleague is not acceptable.

Cupboarddoorknob · 03/01/2026 19:11

Yanbu at all I would not agree to this either

Topseyt123 · 03/01/2026 19:11

Of course you are not being unreasonable. I would refuse to go unless given my own room.

Sharing a hotel room with someone else, whether you know them or not, would be a very uncomfortable experience for most people. They would be very unreasonable to force this. Refuse, and if they try to insist then say that you will not be going.

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 03/01/2026 19:11

Tell them you have a major snoring problem ;)

shuffleofftobuffalo · 03/01/2026 19:12

I’d decline to go, it’s a totally unreasonable ask.

Notmollybutdolly · 03/01/2026 19:12

I’m going to tell them if they ask, I have a farting problem 🤣 which isn’t untrue.

Not happened where I work but not unusual. I totally get why some people are uncomfortable with it but I don’t think it’s objectively unreasonable. I doubt they’ll agree to your request.

NinaNina83 · 03/01/2026 19:13

My work tried that approach once. Did not go down well. They stopped it soon after they tried imposing it on people .

Of course it's unreasonable. I bet the big cheeses are not sharing rooms.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 03/01/2026 19:18

I've been going on business trips since the late 80s. I've never even been asked to share a room. They can FRO if they think I'd be sharing with a stranger.

FunnyOrca · 03/01/2026 19:19

Very reasonable request on your part.

Liftedmeup · 03/01/2026 19:21

Completely unreasonable of them to even suggest it.

momager22 · 03/01/2026 19:21

I absolutely would not be sharing a bedroom with a colleague under any circumstances ! Fuck that.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 03/01/2026 19:22

Don’t even share with my friends on a girl trip. Hate it

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 03/01/2026 19:23

In 20 years of travelling to conferences for loads of different organisations I have literally never known this to be suggested. It's absolutely outrageous.

Tell them you have sleep apnea and try to kill people!

Although actually you should just say its unacceptable.

Henhipster · 03/01/2026 19:24

A useful excuse could be “ I always have a separate room as I snore so badly”

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 03/01/2026 19:25

I’ve refused this before. I was good friends with my travel partner at work so I think they expected we’d be okay with it, but they never made any of the pally men share! And just no, I think it’s unprofessional of them to even suggest it.

Barrellturn · 03/01/2026 19:25

I have colleagues who suggest sharing to save money on our expense budgets. I have always refused. You've got to think what happens if you get gastro or just randomly fart in your sleep. Mortifying!

Dearg · 03/01/2026 19:25

I travelled a lot. This was never suggested. Has the makings of an HR nightmare .
At this point (60s) I don’t share with friends or sisters.
YANBU. You have to be comfortable where you sleep.
