as irregular wonky slices are putting me off biting the bullet and getting a bread machine.

Is there any kit that solves the problem?

We have a good bread knife (can't remember brand). Start the cut nice and straight, tip the bread towards you to check angle, saw through a few times, then check again etc. it gets quicker as you practice. A thick crust and firm crumb on the bread helps it not fall apart too.

Meadowfinch · 03/01/2026 14:57

I use a bread knife. Very easy and low tech 😀

GaladrielHiggins · 03/01/2026 14:58

i use an electric knife and get lovely even slices, much easier than a bread knife.

Just practice, after a few weeks you'll be fine with just a bread knife!

DH doesn't let the dc slice their own, he is the household slicer. . .

Ilovemyshed · 03/01/2026 15:00

A very long serrated knife ( actually originally came with a round cake slicing guide.

I soften the crust by putting a damp towel over when hot, so the crust isn't rock hard and diverting the knife. Also it's really hard to cut when freshly baked, although who cares when it's fresh warm bread from the oven, next day it's much easier to slice nicely. And you really don't need a bread maker a mixer with dough hooks is great to make the dough, allow to rise for an hour, knock back and roll into a loaf shape, put on a baking tray, half an hour to rise and then bake. I just don't have room for all the gadgets.

BadgernTheGarden · 03/01/2026 15:06

And a proper bread knife.

AhBiscuits · 03/01/2026 15:09

You can get a bread slicer machine, but i just use a good bread knife.

Tulcan · 03/01/2026 15:12

I’ve got a storage box with guides on the sides to help with slicing. We don’t really use the guides, just the box, because everyone can just do it now. You will probably just become more skilled.

I make sandwich loaves in the breadmaker and usually leave the loaf out for a while, sometimes as long as a day or so before slicing (I slice the whole loaf at once and freeze as I am the only bread eater in the house) otherwise it's too floppy.

In a pub last week I saw someone using a breadknife with a sort of guide on it which I assume helps with getting even slices, but I think if you practise a lot you'll get better with a normal bread knife. I used to be utterly rubbish at it and still occasionally do the odd duff slice if I try to make them too thin. Start slowly, keep your wrist fairly loose and don't try and change direction mid slice. If it's a less tall loaf like a bloomer or baguette then it should be ok to slice as soon as it's cooled down as there's less chance of floppiness.

faial · 03/01/2026 15:21

Yes the one @threescoops has linked to is like the one I saw at the pub.

DoubleShotEspresso · 03/01/2026 15:21

OP I just bought one of these for my Mum who has suffered terrible hand tremors as a side effect of having chemo treatment. Perfect slices with minimal effort… I now have one too as use a bread machine, really recommend 👍

I dive in with a bread knife and hope for the best. It often ends badly...

I bought one of those it's fantastic. I'm left handed and was useless at cutting bread. This saw is a game changer.

fizzyroselemonade · 03/01/2026 15:25

Sharp bread knife for me. My top tip would be to cut the whole loaf in one go, as you usually keep the same angle at the same “sitting”. It can go wrong when different people start cutting or you do it bit by bit.

(I am however, now looking at some of the slicing kit recommended above 😂)

user2848502016 · 03/01/2026 15:27

I grew up in an unsliced bread kind of house so am quite good at getting an even slice!
However when we switched to home baked bread I got a knife guide thingy from Amazon (it wasn’t expensive) - for DH and DC to use. Sorry can’t remember a brand or anything

Hollowvoice · 03/01/2026 15:31

My BIL uses an electric carving knife. I just have a good bread knife. I think the most important thing is to leave it to rest for a while, it's really hard to cut well while still hot

TangerinePlate · 03/01/2026 15:32

If I bake it in the evening I cut it in the morning,if I bake it in the morning I cut it in the evening. In the meantime it’s covered with thin cotton cloth.

I cut it with serrated(bread) knife- Kitchen Devil iirc.I use it for both sourdough and bread from the bread machine.

I start cutting then stop and look on the other side of loaf as this is the side I can’t see while cutting so can correct it.

Took a while to get used to but works fine for me

outerspacepotato · 03/01/2026 15:34

I have a cheap little bread slicing guide like @DoubleShotEspresso linked and a good serrated bread knife.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 03/01/2026 15:36

I used to use a guide system when I made loaves in a standard shape but I’ve since started baking them in a cast iron pan so they’re round.
I now use a very sharp serrated knife that I saw recommended on Amazon, it’s excellent even on my gluten free bread and if you’ve got to cut it hot (not recommended) I find pinching the top to give a bite point helps
