as irregular wonky slices are putting me off biting the bullet and getting a bread machine.

Is there any kit that solves the problem?

Any links for knives and are those guide things all much the same?

Bread knife!

Brefugee · 03/01/2026 16:35

A very good, quite long, bread knife and an excellent non-slip chopping board.
You get better with practice.

BandedSnail · 03/01/2026 16:36

It's easier to slice if you turn the loaf on its side, so the bit you're slicing into is flat.

ClickCait · 03/01/2026 16:37

Don't let your cack-handed lefty husband near it. 😂
I used to just use a bread knife, but would rotate it 90 or 180 degrees (the loaf, not the knife) so that if it did start to go wonky i didn't compound it by cutting another slice following the same angle.

FlorbelaEspanca · 03/01/2026 16:41

I just use a bread knife. I would say: don't press, just use gravity and a little restrained arm-weight.

Helpforsummer · 03/01/2026 18:23

Eezi board (got it cheaper on eBay as it's a second but can't see what is up with it) and carers bread knife have absolutely changed my wonky sliced life - Christmas present for me from me.

I’m the cack-handed lefty so DH is the bread slicer in our house. He winces when he sees me wielding a large serrated knife.
We buy lovely real bread from a local chain of bakeries based in Sawbridgeworth, Herts.

Nourishinghandcream · 12/04/2026 14:09

I use our trusty old electric carving knife, allows even freshly baked bread to be cut as thick or thin as required.

Defiantly41 · 12/04/2026 14:18

My granny used to butter the loaf and then hold the bread against her chest to slice super thin, even slices. Obviously years or even decades of practice as they lived rurally and sliced bread really wasn’t a thing for most of her life, she was born in the 1890s and died in the early 1970s.

How she never sliced off her hand or boob, I’ll never know!

The Jono bread knife is a game changer.

I bought one of those it's fantastic. I'm left handed and was useless at cutting bread. This saw is a game changer.

I got a left handed bread knife and it was a revelation! The serrations are on the correct side for lefties and it cuts everything beautifully.

Like a PP's gran, I butter the loaf before I slice the piece off.

EBearhug · 12/04/2026 16:35

I hacmve a new Zyliss bread knife, after being at my cousins and realising my 60+ year old inherited breadknofe might be a bit blunt...

CurlewKate · 12/04/2026 17:07

I have a bread bow (loads on Amazon.) A revalation!

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 12/04/2026 17:11

I'm so glad you asked this, I've been meaning to do the same myself. I've looked on Amazon at the dizzying array of options but really need to hear people's first hand experiences before I buy.

drspouse · 12/04/2026 17:26

The bread bows look to be similar to the Jono.
My DCs are both left handed and can't use ours though.

DiscoBeat · 12/04/2026 17:30

A decent bread knife and practise

Theyreeatingthedogs · 13/04/2026 00:25

Jono knife and a wooden bread board. The Jono knife can be either handed. I like the recommendation of turning the loaf on its side. Will try that next time.

Ours is right handed - bought I suspect when we knew the DCs were left handed but without thinking they'd need to use it 🤦

Sunloungerhogger · 13/04/2026 09:05

I just use a bread knife, and we grew up with homemade bread so many years of practice. You’d think with all the practice I would be better to be fair, but they still sometimes go rather wonky! Still, the bread still tastes delicious even if the slices are uneven so I’m not that fussed.
