Would you allow your garden to be dug up for a community scheme?

Im not sure I could, even though I would want to feel Im community minded (obviously not!)

Watching these garden make overs over the years, particularly the ones where they do a community project and usually for some reason involves having to ask nearby neighbours if they can access pipes or stuff under their property and they always say yes

Today was watching some garden rescue thing building a food bank up north somewhere and they basically need to ruin this womans garden, pull down the shed, fence, dig holes all over the garden and she says yes! I got anxious just watching

I turned over just as they realised its not just her garden they need to dig up either, they had to ask next door. So dont know the outcome, presumbly that neighbour said yes as well.

I think Time Team also used to do this.

What happens if the neighbour says no?

Would you say no?

Im not sure I could cope with the mess, intrusion and stress of it to be honest which would probably have me as a marked woman in the street!

I'd say yes to Time Team or something interesting. I'd like to assess each project on its merits.

BettysRoasties · 02/01/2026 14:51

They will have been paid or promised their own garden make over.

I wouldn’t want the hassle so I’d say no.

FrostAtMinuit · 02/01/2026 14:52

I think they give people generous compensation - enough to have the garden redone.

MangoBiscuit · 02/01/2026 14:52

The only part of my garden that doesn't need sorting out are the fences, which are new. So if they could do it without touching the fences, sure.

I had always assumed that they made good any damage afterwards, and off camera, but I don't know for sure.

LlynTegid · 02/01/2026 15:07

If Nick Knowles was part of the scheme, I would say no.

Anyone else, I would consider the plans.

Wel of course they're always told it will be put back and made right, I dont think anyone is suggesting that they would just leave it all demolished but the time all that would take and the mess, traipsing in and out of the house,w ater needing to be turned off, our shed would just collapse if it was taken down, the stuff inside is probably holding it up!

I paid a lot for a full garden makeover a couple of years ago. No one way would I let anyone start digging it up again.

vanillalattes · 02/01/2026 15:16

No way.

soupyspoon · 02/01/2026 17:09

I see Im not alone, I didnt feel very charitable.

Depends how much I'd get out of it.

FionnulaTheCooler · 02/01/2026 17:14

My garden needs done anyway so I'd probably say yes. If I'd just spent a lot of money to have it landscaped like my neighbours have, probably not. No way I'd let them inside my house though

TheFlis · 02/01/2026 17:20

I absolutely would allow it, particularly if it was in circumstances like on that show where they could not have had toilets without that sewage pipe connection. Given the incredible work that club did for the kids in a very deprived community you would have to be pretty cold hearted to say no.

BohoGarden · 02/01/2026 17:23

I'm another in the 'yes if it was an interesting archeological dig' camp.

My cottage is really old and I'm always digging up old things in the garden - bottles, buckles and stuff, nothing valuable. I'd love to know more about the history of the place.

So that Dermot Gavin can do a hideous makeover on next door's garden? Nah.

EchoedSilence · 02/01/2026 17:24

I'd let them for a scheme like the one on the recent DIY SOS. So many kids will benefit, a few days of disruption wouldn't bother me,

Zov · 02/01/2026 17:25

I am very precious and protective over my garden, and spend AGES in there in the Spring and Summer. I work very hard on it, and it looks amazing in the Spring and Summer. So no way is anyone getting into it and digging it up. Don't care who they are.

Octavia64 · 02/01/2026 17:26

Time team yes.

honestly my garden is a shithole and I’m slowly working on fixing it so probably yes to anyone if they paid me

UnhappyHobbit · 02/01/2026 17:27

I pondered this while watching an archeological programme digging up peoples gardens (not time team). I would love it but I’ve also just paid ££s for my garden to be landscaped and I wouldn’t want to pay again for it to be redone.

Also this programme dug up plenty of skeletons and it was very sad to realise this square was built on a mass grave. I’d rather not know that.

I’ve not seen these community based projects but again, I wouldn't be keen on offering my garden.

Zigazagbox · 02/01/2026 17:31

It depends on the extent and what for. Possibly how fond I am of my neighbours too.

For example I’m another one that would happily let time team dig my garden up because it would be of interest to me and happily let a small patch be dug up as long as I didn’t actively dislike the neighbours.

I’d probably only let extensive very disruptive work be done if it was really improving the quality of life of a neighbour I was particularly fond of or if it was in aid of a cause I felt particularly strongly about

Soashamed60 · 02/01/2026 17:32

Even for commumity projects I would imagine the tv companies would compensate financially & restore the gardens to their original state. I know that's what they did in the village where Heartbeat was filmed.

tripleginandtonic · 02/01/2026 17:37

I would allow it.

It's not every day that one is introduced to a dilemma that one has never so much as thought of, let alone had to worry about.

And the great thing about this one is that even now - knowing that such a worry exists - I just can't get exercised about it. Not even on someone else's behalf.

It's not that I don't care. It's better than that. I simply can't imagine it ever being a problem.

This is the most fabulous start to the year! There are Things I Don't Have to Worry About! Marvelous!

Thank you so much, OP.

ColdAsAWitches · 02/01/2026 17:45

Absolutely. I'm fairly confident it would end up better than it is now. They know that if the leave them like shit there would be posts and negative publicity all over Facebook and the papers. The Telegraph and Daily Mail would be delighted to have another anti-BBC story, so it's in the programme's interests to make sure they do a good job

HarryVanderspeigle · 02/01/2026 17:54

I would be fine as long as they put things back. I have a lot of pots, so they could just be moved out of the way.
