As a disabled woman sick of being terrified on the pavement to feel happy reading about the destruction of e-scooters and e-bikes?

I know some people will want me to be crucified over this. That's mumsnet. I get it. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. The number of times I have almost been hit by one of these...I have had to walk into busy roads. I've even experienced being sworn out for daring to use the footpath.
Some cyclists and scooter users are a menace and I think they have become emboldened because of the electric vehicles.
They are dangerous, illegal and whenever I see a big piles of these monstrous pieces of s#*t being destroyed I feel relief. Anyone who buys these for children is selfish and stupid. IMHO.

So get your pitchforks out. Time to tell me what an abomination I am....its eniveitable.

Has anyone here been seriously injured by one of them?

I don't have a disability and totally agree with you. Jumping into the road to avoid a little scrote on an illegal bike/scooter is not OK. Smash the lot of them to smithereens and good riddance. I often hope they fall off and injured themselves for good measure.

crankycurmudgeon · 01/01/2026 16:37

I hate the impunity with which people ride electric scooters in public (illegal) on the pavement (also illegal). Where is the sense of civic responsibility?

WonderfulSmith · 01/01/2026 16:37

There is a man near me with an electric unicycle. He piles along pedestrianised areas at what must be 30 mph. I swear he purposefully passes women with inches to spare. He is an adult man, old enough to have a grey beard, twat.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 01/01/2026 16:38

What destruction are you talking about? I also want these (and bikes) ff the pavements but I don't understand the context here.

bombastix · 01/01/2026 16:40

I am not particularly cranky about them but I do think that seizure is about the only practical deterrent given the lack of enforcement in pedestrian areas.

If a vehicle hits you at 20mph then human beings are vulnerable to serious injury or even death. That is true for cars and these things, even bicycles.

NoisyMonster678 · 01/01/2026 16:43

They are a bunch of brain deD morons OP.

You could video them and upload the footage to the Police website then you have evidence.

TooBored1 · 01/01/2026 16:43

I'd love to see this extended to cars that park on the pavement/ verges too.

LittleBitofBread · 01/01/2026 16:44

I don’t understand what you mean by destruction.
I agree though, they’re a menace, and I include ordinary bikes as well, not just electric ones. There’s been a massive increase in people riding on the pavement, usually very fast.
I refuse to give way. They can slow down or go into the road. If they don’t look as if they’re going to, I just stand still and wait for them to make their way around me. I fairly often receive a mouthful of abuse for this, but I don’t care.

Police can now crush them. One example is Hampshire Police who called the project perhaps unimaginatively "operation crush"

I nearly ran a kid over who shot off a footpath into the road. Just a couple of weeks later I nearly over a teen who was going the wrong day down a one way street then cut me up on the inside of a mini roundabout (both on e-scooters). Who will feel guilty when they get hurt? Probably the poor person least to blame!

BreakingBroken · 01/01/2026 16:50

i’m confused; e-bikes? Like pedal assist used by many seniors on the road?
Other than the school run I’ve not seen people on the sidewalks scootering.
Just finished a London visit and all forms of cyclist were on the road and not interfering with pedestrians.

Kayoh · 01/01/2026 16:51

Something has gone really wrong in this country with escooters. In much of Europe their use is supported by the state as a way to get cars off the road and reduce emissions. There are schemes in several European capitals to encourage use, set up lanes for them etc.

But here they've become a menace that everyone wants to destroy and have mainly been adopted by boy racers. I'm not saying you're unreasonable exactly I'm just wondering what went so wrong in the UK.

Oh and Dorset is another county crushing them. I'm working my way through the articles and videos with tea and biscuits. Its a pleasing sight 😌

There’s a teenager near here, who comes out of a narrow lane on to a main road at top speed. He has a toddler on the e scooter in front of him. There are frequent notes on FB about the illegality of them, but they continue and I’ve never seen anyone apprehended.

Far too many are wearing hoodies and balaclavas.

somanychristmaslights · 01/01/2026 16:54

Me and DS nearly got run over by one coming whizzing round a blind corner on a scooter. Luckily he moved into the road. Shame a car wasn’t coming to run the scooter over!!!

We have someone in our area that takes a young child to school on one. Bloody idiot. And if they come off, it’ll be the young kid that dies and not the adult.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 01/01/2026 16:55

BBC IPlayer has a programme called crash detectives which follow investigations after major road traffic accidents. There is at least 2 involving electric scooters, which will put off anyone driving them on the road!

However, that doesn’t mean they should be on the pavement. It is crazy that it is so easy to buy one when they are illegal to use on the public roads &pavements. They should only be used on private land with the owners permission.

bombastix · 01/01/2026 16:55

The main point is how ignorant people are about the risk. I don’t have much patience with people moaning about urban speed limits and pedestrian areas. If these things really were only limited to 15mph then the chances are they could be safely included and managed in our system. It is because people “upgrade” them and ride them in pedestrian areas there is risk.

The first time I saw Lime scooters was in Lisbon and I thought what a good idea they were for city built on hills with lots of narrow streets.

They are an absolute pita where I work in inner London. Ridden on pavements and dumped all over the place. I sometimes use one between the station and my office and its great to see them filling up cycle lanes in the rush hour.

But so many scrotes use them and are utterly antisocial.

In what circumstances? Like, if they see someone riding one on the pavement, can they order them off it and crush it before their eyes?
I don’t really want the bikes destroyed, I just want the cunts riding them on the pavement strongly discouraged from doing so.

I'm not sure what all this ^^ is about? Most people find them a menace.

My 6ft 2" well built son walked out of a shop and got knocked up in the air by a 14 year old kid on an electric scooter.

He then had the front to start giving my son attitude about it!!

Minty25 · 01/01/2026 17:05

Completely agree and many just ignore the rules even if they are on the roads rather than the pavements. Regularly see them just going through red lights or diagonally across junctions without even looking. have had one very near miss myself and can't imagine how scary it must be for older people or those with limited mobility. It just seems that society is just full of absolute anti-social menaces of all sorts at the moment, these just being one part of the problem.

TheNightingalesStarling · 01/01/2026 17:07

The police are allowed to confiscate them if they see them in ridden on a public highway. (And then yes, they are destroyed).

We hired them in Berlin which worked well as they had a proper cycle lane network. The UK generally doesn't.

They can seize it immediately but no they crush them together in large numbers. Google it you will see piles of them.
