To not get the problem with fireworks and pets

SoldTheMovieRights · 01/01/2026 00:30

There's fireworks going off next door but one and I can hear them, but just some small popping noises really and barely audible when we had the telly on earlier.

It's never been loud enough to wake or disturb DC.

However, local Facebook group for my village is full of posts complaining about fireworks and how they are traumatising pets. AIBU to not get it? If they are too quiet to disturb people why are they so bad for dogs (who would all be inside in the evening anyway?)?

Lots of people wanting them banned because of their dogs but I just don't get it, at worst it's a few mins of noise, a few nights a year, is it really that awful?

I have zero skin in the game as could never be bothered to do fireworks myself, but if my neighbours fancy it, crack on, I'll enjoy the show.

So basically if I lived a totally self sufficient life - which few people do. I'd be ok to say I don't like fireworks going off for weeks at a time near my house?

Otherwise no?

Avantiagain · 01/01/2026 13:47

There were fireworks going off here from 5pm till 12.30am. The house over the road had ones at 7pm so loud that it sounded like we were under attack.

ISeeYouHere · 01/01/2026 13:48

I like watching the fireworks on November 5th but wouldn’t set then them off at home. It doesn’t bother me at all if neighbours do and I’ve always had dogs, none of whom have ever been bothered by them so I’m pretty indifferent to them personally.

GinAndJuice99 · 01/01/2026 13:54

If it was a few nights a year, that would be ok. Where I am it’s at least 50%. Every night in the summer, all of October and early November, and pretty often in winter and spring.

lemonraspberry · 01/01/2026 13:57

To me there is a bit of a double standard. Fireworks must be banned as they create too much noice and scare animals, yet dog owners insist on bringing dogs into what must be stressful situations for them such as shopping centres, cafes, pubs, hairdressers etc which are also very noisy places.

a local dog died last night when she bolted at the noise and ran into a main rd. - where I am there always seems to be a dog running free in a main road (forest path, off-road area) for one reason or another. Not an unusual occurrence at all and fireworks not the cause.

Trippingthelighteddaylight · 01/01/2026 13:59

My dog shakes with fear, when she hears fireworks. Dogs have much better hearing than humans, which is why some get upset.

Thanks for those who have taken the time to give considered responses.

I have to say that I still don't recognise any of the war zone descriptions, so maybe I have been very lucky to have all my houses/flats very well insulated from sound, or maybe all my family has hearing issues! Even the proper displays I've gone to haven't sounded like bombs going off (in fact, in the most recent one, DC decided to take ear defenders off as they weren't that loud).

So it seems that the volume is very variable, as well as the frequency (one PP said every week during the summer which certainly has never been my experience).

Still doesn't explain why people in my local area are complaining so much when we don't seem to get the house shaking ones, or have them so often, but perhaps they have particularly sensitive animals.

There are incredibly loud ones this year that I've never heard before. They actually hurt my ears when they're nearby.

Are they the same dog owners?

Like cyclists, motorists, or any other category, they're individuals who don't share collective guilt.

Perhaps I live in a very backwards area and we haven't got these yet, watch out for my thread complaining about them next year maybe!

Because this poster seems to have an issue that cats eat pet food. My cats actually do eat vegan cat biscuits. Not because I'm trying to impose a vegan lifestyle on them - I'm not. But because they like them. One of my cats is fussy around biscuits and won't eat any other kind.

This poster is just arguing with me for the sake of it. I've been vegan for decades. I don't drive. I wear second hand clothes - but I'm selfish because I have indoor cats and want silent fireworks

No bother

Vegan cats —now I’ve heard it all 😅.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 01/01/2026 16:19

I only use vegan fireworks.

So all’s well.

Wordsmithery · 01/01/2026 16:19

Dogs and cats can be terrified. You can keep cats in if you know in advance when fireworks will go off but they are not restricted to 5 Nov and NYE so it's impossible to be fully prepared.

Goodness only knows what the impact is on our wild animals.

I don't seek a ban but I do think there should be no private sales - organised events only, advertised in advance.

Yes anxious animals.
I've had either rescued or rehomed cats/rabbits all my life.
they are terrified. Two of them now are very anxious. They are loud here.
there is no way to retrain fear from these animals. Anxiety then brings on other conditions.
I'm a good owner who does everything i can to make their lives stress free no matter the cost, but weeks of on off fireworks is torture ( and for me as i also can’t cope with the noise!).
this is not just pets though, this is farmlife and wildlife.

it pains me too see 2 of my pets hiding for hours, and then running away when i make the slightest noise just getting up.

All.those saying organised displays are fine - they have much bigger fireworks with MUCH louder bangs than people have in their back gardens. How is that better? Is it just because they wont be right next to YOU'RE garden. So that's OK?

They are planned in advance and publicised so people can plan around them. They also dont last for 7 hours or go on night after night (Diwali - bonfire night).

SmoothSquirrel · 01/01/2026 17:14

It’s not just a few nights a year though. A week leading up to Bonfire night at least and then days after, then Diwali, then NYE and not just at midnight either. Some people use them for other celebrations too. I’m attaching some instances of how they have affected people and their pets.

We opened the door last night to watch some fireworks and there were 2 cats running around in a panic not knowing where to go

Vegan cats —now I’ve heard it all 😅.

My cats aren't vegan. I said they eat vegan biscuits. Some people do feed their cats an exclusively vegan diet - I don't. It's wise not to assume

Croakymccroakyvoice · 01/01/2026 17:22

They're going off again here now.

My cats aren't vegan - at no point did I say this. I said one of my cats - my oldest boy is fussy when it comes to biscuits and prefers the vegan kind

Why are you feeding them vegan biscuits? First step on the path to exclusive veganism (like their owner) perhaps? Veganism is not a natural diet for cats. It can lead to nutritional deficiencies and issues like blindness, muscle wasting and neurological problems. You feed your cat a vegan diet, you could end up with a criminal record or even behind bars (as per the RSPCA). Just so you know . . .

My old cat - who is almost 20 prefers them to other biscuits. Have you read my other posts where I said that's not all I feed him? Yes that's right - the police are going to arrest me when they find out I'm feeding a 19 year old cat vegan biscuits - because they like them - and he gets plenty of other things to eat

BTW. As you can see from my username I'm Scottish. The RSPCA don't cover Scotland.

Also - just so you know - I've been the victim of crime (serious) on more than one occasion and police did nothing but I'm going to be arrested because someone on mumsnet who hasn't read my posts properly says so

No. I don't feed him vegan biscuits as the first step to exclusive veganism. He's 20 next year. I have had him 19 years - he is not an exclusive vegan cat as I have said more than once on this thread - anything else you want to nit pick me for - or are you quite finished?

You are also talking complete nonsense. Because even vegan or vegetarian cat food (tinned) which I don't feed my cats has added taurine

Yes - I'm going to end up behind bars.

(face-palm).

My cat is absolutely fine thanks - I don't need your (petty) input

Ps. Even some domestic abusers don't end up behind bars - because jails are full to bursting

Feel free to report me to the RSPCA though

scottishgirl69 · 01/01/2026 18:22

Btw - it's only one of my cats who is very fussy when it comes to cat biscuits - the others aren't. Maybe you could read peoples posts properly before you make false allegations that I'm feeding my cats an exclusively vegan diet. And even if I were it has sweet fa to do with you. You're just looking for an argument for the sake of it - that's very clear

If I gave my cats tinned vegan food - they would spit it out.

Methinks the lady doth protest too much!

The Scottish version of the RSPCA, the SPCA, also consider it neglect and cruelty to feed an animal a vegan diet, FYI. Being Scottish doesn’t get you a get out of jail free card. Jail time for animal cruelty can be up to 5 years in your land.

Why are you feeding the cat vegan biscuits in the first place? Answer that. Maybe experimenting to see if you can get the cat onto the vegan path? Your personal values and beliefs are yours and yours alone and shouldn’t be forced onto your cat.

Sure. But NYE is the same date every year. Yoh can plan around that too.

scottishgirl69 · 01/01/2026 18:53

People who kill or beat their animals don't even get jail sentences in most instances - they get paltry fines

BTW - I had a girl who died at the age of 19 this year who did have neurological issues - but it was zero to do with her diet - she didn't eat a vegan diet on any level

I really do object to you trying to suggest that I'm neglecting my cats and that I deserve being reported or jailed

Please mind your own business - there's been enough shaming of people who have pets on this thread to date
