To not get the problem with fireworks and pets

SoldTheMovieRights · 01/01/2026 00:30

There's fireworks going off next door but one and I can hear them, but just some small popping noises really and barely audible when we had the telly on earlier.

It's never been loud enough to wake or disturb DC.

However, local Facebook group for my village is full of posts complaining about fireworks and how they are traumatising pets. AIBU to not get it? If they are too quiet to disturb people why are they so bad for dogs (who would all be inside in the evening anyway?)?

Lots of people wanting them banned because of their dogs but I just don't get it, at worst it's a few mins of noise, a few nights a year, is it really that awful?

I have zero skin in the game as could never be bothered to do fireworks myself, but if my neighbours fancy it, crack on, I'll enjoy the show.

I think the people moaning are ridiculous to be honest. You can’t stop people celebrating in the way they please and in a way that isn’t illegal. Grow up guys!

Maybe the people celebrating need to grow up and not impose their "need" for noise on their neighbours?

Why can't they enjoy themselves without being obnoxious to everyone around them?

dynamiccactus · 01/01/2026 13:09

No, they can't do what they like. There is a social contract which says that you try not to inconvenience others with your lifestyle choices. It is perfectly possible to have a dog, train it well, and not impose it on other people.

Equally it is perfectly possible to go to a organised display and not let dangerous and noisy objects go off in your garden!

Not illegal does not mean that it is sensible.

Contract 😂. Sorry I can’t! I’ve heard enough so won’t even bother answer the rest of the drivel ❤️

SexyFrenchDepression · 01/01/2026 13:12

They started again at 3am this morning! Bloody ridiculous! How can anyone plan for that if they have stressed animals.

No.
You can't always do things in the way you please. Other people exist.
We learn that when we " grow up"

Again it’s not illegal and they can do as they please in the comfort of their own homes!

KarenWheeler · 01/01/2026 13:13

They've been letting off fireworks here since 23rd December. There's a field just behind our close where the fireworks are let off. The bangs echo all through the close, so loud they sound like a bomb going off. Every night from 4pm until around 1am. Animals have more sensitive hearing than we do. Of course they're going to be affected!

"Grow up guys"? In what way are people concerned for the welfare of animals and humans with PTSD, anxiety or dementia apparently "juvenile"? I'd suggest that on the contrary, people failing to see others' points of view are the childlike ones.

Why can't the people celebrating grow up and buy silent fireworks? Why do they need to hear the loud bangs in order to celebrate?

ChubbyPuffling · 01/01/2026 13:16

7pm til 1am here , really really loud this year.

I do not get how it is OK to sell explosive devices to anyone, to set off anywhere. Would much prefer that it is organised, licensed and insured displays only. But that is just me.

GeorgeClooneyshouldhavemarriedme · 01/01/2026 13:16

I was up almost all night with my deeply deeply distressed dog. It was truly awful to see this beautiful gentle creature suffer so much. So unnecessary.

But hey, the world is full of people who
" just don't get it" like OP. It's not that difficult to understand OP. I agree with PP who thinks you are being disingenuous.

Some empathy, some common sense and some respect goes a long way.

Stay alive and consume resources - what a ridiculous take. Particularly given that you aren't vegan and eat meat yourself.

Maybe if you lived where I do -in a built up residential area. You might have an understanding of why I'm not so keen on fireworks

Because it's not just November 5th

It's the week before. The week after. It's Chinese new year. It's when Glasgow Rangers beat Glasgow Celtic. It's Diwali. It's New years eve. As I type there are people setting off fireworks just now.

I actually have ptsd too and fireworks do cause distress to some people with ptsd

You can slag me off all you like. You're the person who brought pet ownership into this

I'll actually get to decide what I like. You don't control my opinion

I live in a city. And no, I'm not the one who brought pet ownership into it. The thread is literally about pets. Speaking of ridiculous. Some pets also trigger some people's PTSD, so again if that's a problem with fireworks it's also a problem with dogs.

Ultimately, whether or not you're capable od adjusting your opinion to reflect this or not, the facts remain as they are. If you want to throw stones in your glass house, you are welcome to do so, but it's going to be pointed out. The poster who pointed out the damage done to other animals by pet ownership was entirely correct, and if other people's selfish luxuries are up for restrictions then so are yours.

As I said earlier in the thread my mum has rabbits and they are terrified of fireworks. There are people who set them off two streets away for an hour. I live minutes away from her and I can hear them from my house. They are that loud. She thought she was going to lose two of them a few years ago as they stopped eating and went into stasis - don't just come into threads shouting "grow up" when people are explaining why fireworks cause their pets issues

Snowdropskeepfalling · 01/01/2026 13:17

This is why

Cats and dogs have significantly better hearing than humans, especially for high-pitched sounds (ultrasonics), with cats having the widest range (up to 79-100 kHz) compared to dogs (around 45 kHz) and humans (around 20 kHz)

Did you really not know that animals generally have much better hearing than humans?

I am glad that in real life all the people I know are not as selfish and vile as these posters! The normal small display in a garden isnt that loud but some of the ones last night were so loud the windows shook. We dont have any official displays within 3 miles of my house so they must have been exceptionally loud.

I don't have selfish luxuries. I don't have any luxuries - I live below the line

I have indoor rescue cats - and if that bothers you - tough!!!

You must have missed the part where I said my oldest cat eats vegan cat biscuits - because he's fussy and he likes them. I've said that twice now

GusGloop · 01/01/2026 13:19

My cat was terrified but I don't necessarily think all fireworks should be banned. I'm more concerned it's not safe for humans to buy them and set them off in small gardens. I've never bought any, prefer to go to professional displays. Usually at the beach where they're set off from a boat in the sea.
I knew they'd be going off last night and was at home to cuddle my cat.

SoLongMae · 01/01/2026 13:20

Just because something isn't illegal, doesn't make it right. It's such a selfish attitude to have thinking your enjoyment trumps the right to animal and human welfare. Fortunately, my dog is absolutely fine with fireworks (and we realise we're in a minority), but our neighbour's dog is so frightened that it takes him ages to recover from the stress and they're worried he'll escape or have a heart attack. Around Bonfire Night was hell for them as they went on for weeks.

It's not as simple as training them to be okay; some rescues just can't be trained. Also the fireworks sounds on YouTube etc just don't accurately reflect the sound of them in real life.

Edited

Your rescue cats are selfish luxuries. You got them because you wanted them, it was a choice, and it has an environmental impact.

And if that fact being pointed out bothers you- tough!

On the edit- you have more than one cat, and even your now vegan cat wasn't always so. So that makes absolutely fuck all difference to the point. If wildlife is important enough for fireworks to be limited, it's important enough for pets to be as well.

Justcallmedaffodil · 01/01/2026 13:23

Fortunately both of our dogs now are fine with fireworks, but our previous rescue dog was petrified, to the point of hiding and toileting in the house around bonfire night/NYE rather than going outside, even just in our garden. The trauma would last well beyond the night itself too, it would take weeks to build her back up to leaving the house for walks etc again afterwards. Very upsetting for her, and for us to watch.

couldthisbe2501 · 01/01/2026 13:23

Well, I’m lucky in that fireworks don’t and never have bothered my dog or woke up my child. However, the fireworks that were going off in my small town from about 9pm til 3am were anything but ‘small popping noises’. I half expected to open the curtains and find our house had been moved to the Somme circa 1916. They were very loud and very incessant.

BadgernTheGarden · 01/01/2026 13:27

I don't know how your neighbours have quiet fireworks, around here it was like bombs going off, they are so loud these days.

Worralorra · 01/01/2026 13:30

We must be really lucky with our pets - rushed home one bonfire night because we had forgotten about the fireworks and our rabbits were outside in their run. When we got to them they were clearly fascinated by them - watching them! (We live near a place that did huge displays)
Then we got a dog, who barked at them once, the first time she heard one, so we said it’s ok they are only fireworks, and she’s not taken any notice of them since…
I do think that if the owners get stressed by them, the animal picks up on it though…

scottishgirl69 · 01/01/2026 13:31

So basically if you own a cat or a dog you have no right to be upset about your cat or dog being scared by fireworks because they eat pet food

What aboutery at its finest. We are talking about pets being terrified and dying as a result of fireworks

So - people on here who eat a bacon sandwich of a morning and like fireworks are sitting calling people who feed their pets pet food selfish. You really don't have that right

Some pets don't eat pet food made from other animals. Rabbits. Guineas - but they are still upset by fireworks. Birds. Foxes - what's the excuse for it?

There's less harm done by fireworks so it's ok? Tell that to the owners of pets who are dead

Do people really want to do a you can't be bothered about fireworks because you have a cat and it eats pet food league table?

I've no issue with fireworks. I would just prefer them to be silent - if that makes me selfish then so be it

EverythingElseIsTaken · 01/01/2026 13:45

Last nights did seem particularly loud and long and they did wake me (yes I was in bed before midnight).

But I’ve had dogs and cats most of my life and never had one that was bothered by fireworks. My cats generally used to sit in the windowsill to watch them and my last dog in particular used to ask to go out in the garden when the neighbours had fireworks (we didn’t let her).
