To think next door neighbours have to sort their dogs out?

Chefpig · 29/12/2025 22:22

Next door neighbours have lived here for 30+ years. They have two small dogs and one barks at the slightest thing. Someone going past can set it off. There's not ten minutes goes by where the dog doesn't bark. They barely go out and they're well aware the dogs bark. God forbid if anyone visits them. The dogs bark non stop without taking a breath the whole time. My anxiety is sky high. I've taken to shouting a few times. Immature, I know but I think if they were going to sort the barking they would do.

The dog has just barked non stop for ten minutes and it's 22.15pm here. I'm in bed ready to nod off. I often get woken up by the dog barking. The woman of the couple does often scream at the dog to shut up. It doesn't work, obviously.

I'm reluctant to go down the route of the council. I don't want bad relations with my neighbours.

Is there anything else I can consider?

P.S. why the fuck don't people train their dogs effectively?

They know the dogs bark. They are obviously not bothered by it or CBA to deal with it. I can’t see any other way forward other than the council.

Crochetandtea · 30/12/2025 02:46

Speak to them first and mention your intention to go to the council as the barking is causing you distress.

Catladywithoutacat · 30/12/2025 05:03

are they leaving them outdoors in this weather?

Bigtreeesss · 30/12/2025 05:15

council but don’t hold your breath on that making any difference

Have you spoken to the neighbours?

Noise cancelling headphones may be an option

No they bark indoors. With the humans there in the same room. Last night the dog barked again and again and the woman was screaming the dogs name. The dog took no notice. I wouldn't either if someone was.screaming my name.

You'll need to discuss with the council. You open a case and then you record all events for a set period and send it off to them. It's the only way but then if you move it'll have to be put down as a dispute with a neighbour on the selling form unless they have already moved just consider that

I have dogs and this is great for stopping them barking. Not sure if it would work through walls, but I often give it a squirt in the garden if the neighbour’s dogs are barking. My dogs shut up as soon as I lift up the can.

Have you posted about this before and nothing has changed if it was you, you got lots of advice .

Beachcomber74 · 30/12/2025 09:14

Buy them the spray listed above and take it round and say if they don’t try this or get a trainer in then you’ll go to the council. What breed?

SBGM247 · 30/12/2025 10:52

Can you move?

What a silly answer. Of course if she puts her house on the market today, it will be bought tomorrow and she can buy a new home and move in on Friday at the latest.

That is an aversive training technique and is not to be recommended.

What are magic steaks?

Try getting something that will make the dog worse so it barks constantly 24/7, maybe an outdoor chime or something. Then get yourself some good In Ear Monitors (really good earplugs) to block the sound for you, and hope that they soon get so sick of the noise they get rid of the dog.

OriginalUsername2 · 30/12/2025 13:09

I have the exact same neighbours! Their response is “Well, Dogs bark!”

And that’s that. They can’t think any deeper than that. (But they will still scream at their dog to stop barking if it’s annoying THEM?!)

The barking is annoying enough. It’s double annoying followed by them screeching the dog’s name to no effect.

Clairey1986 · 30/12/2025 13:33

Have you spoken to them about it? Obviously they know the dogs bark, they may be unaware how much you can hear it/it affects you though.

What did they say when you spoke to them about it? I assume you have?

Maddy70 · 30/12/2025 14:01

I had a dog like this. We had numerous behaviorists and trainers and nothing worked. It literally drove me to mental illness be kind and speak to them but honestly they may be doing everything they can

That makes no sense whatsoever, because you don't know how old these particular dogs are, or how long the people have had them.

ADHDMumHere · 30/12/2025 14:13

Constant barking is stressful and your frustration is understandable.
Try white noise or a calm daytime conversation before escalating.
If it continues, formal action is reasonable training is the owner’s responsibility.

SouthCoastBunny · 30/12/2025 14:19

Makes me think of Clarence from Keeping Mum!

I see OP has not been back. Surely we need to know if OP has ever spoken to them about it (I'm intrigued by the 30 years reference though; they need to be onto the Guinness Book of Records about that dog ...!) - and if you don't want bad relations OP how would shouting be preferable to discussion?

Council support depends on where you live - if the dogs are barking for 10 minutes at a time then I don't think they will help; I am sure I read somewhere it has to be constantly minimum 20 minute stretches, consistently throughout the day and night.

What a silly answer. Of course if she puts her house on the market today, it will be bought tomorrow and she can buy a new home and move in on Friday at the latest.

Your answer is far sillier given the previous poster didn't specify anything about moving immediately in the first place!

It's not as if the council would come round today and remove the dogs if she rung, pretty much any action would obviously be long term rather than an immediate solution.

Whether OP is in a position to consider moving is probably the most important question to consider. If yes, it is relevant even if she wants to try other action first because legally if selling her property she has to declare any neighbour disputes, which reporting them to the council will come under. If she's in social housing she will need to consider the implications of abandoning her tenancy or trying to organise a swap. Renting privately would probably have the least implications.

If she's not in the position to be able to move anytime within the next few years then pretty much her only options are
A) trying to talk to the neighbours
B) if no success refer to council.

Sadly there's no guarantee either will work.

If you do refer to council they will ask you to do a noise diary- I would advise backdating this rather than starting today and waiting another few months. Then they'll probably get someone round for evidence - could take months and sods law it's the one time the dogs won't bark. Even then there are further stages before a fine and then more enforcement if they don't pay the fine.

Generally you can see why people do consider moving if possible.

when I had the same problem I tried blasting anti-dog barking noises via YouTube through the wall - it's so high pitched humans can't hear it but dogs can..honestly had mixed results one did seem to shut up but the other barked more. Worth a try. If it does work you can get automatic ones.
