To think next door neighbours have to sort their dogs out?

Next door neighbours have lived here for 30+ years. They have two small dogs and one barks at the slightest thing. Someone going past can set it off. There's not ten minutes goes by where the dog doesn't bark. They barely go out and they're well aware the dogs bark. God forbid if anyone visits them. The dogs bark non stop without taking a breath the whole time. My anxiety is sky high. I've taken to shouting a few times. Immature, I know but I think if they were going to sort the barking they would do.

The dog has just barked non stop for ten minutes and it's 22.15pm here. I'm in bed ready to nod off. I often get woken up by the dog barking. The woman of the couple does often scream at the dog to shut up. It doesn't work, obviously.

I'm reluctant to go down the route of the council. I don't want bad relations with my neighbours.

Is there anything else I can consider?

P.S. why the fuck don't people train their dogs effectively?

Somehow, this thread has ended up under 'Shopping' ... I am not sure why unless it is due to a couple of links.

In reality you’ll need to move as it’s unlikely to change.

Unfortunately there’s no guarantee the new neighbour won’t have noisy dogs or perhaps anti social in a different way. At my old house, next door had a tiny dog who barked at random times throughout the day and that set my nerves on edge so just can’t imagine the misery people experience when it’s non stop 😬

One of my friends has just moved to get away from the increasingly grim area we live in and some awful neighbours who let their dogs crap in the back yard and never clean it up so the smell was vile. The sale and buying process took almost a year and cost her a fortune as she sold at a loss to

get the hell out. Now she has neighbours who make a noise until the early hours . That is the thing, you never know what you are getting into, the house is nice though and hopefully things will resolve themselves once the holiday period is over

I don’t blame you, it would drive me insane.
I would complain to them first and then the council. They need to walk the dogs, train them not to bark non stop, probably to late for training but a dog walk would help.

My last neighbours dog was a nightmare too to the point I got the council involved and the barking quietened down mostly.

I think before you go down the council route you need to consider the levels of noise you yourself make. Everything is irritating to someone - cats pooing in other neighbours gardens, DIY at random times, late night BBQs, music, tv, the way you shut your front door, how loud you talk on the phone etc, how late you use your washing machine. Complaints can become a neighbourhood war these days, so if you put in a complaint you need to be prepared to go into battle.

We live between 4 yappy dogs so I know how annoying it is. I actually find the owners cackling laugh more annoying than their dogs barking at everything.

I feel your pain @Chefpig . I lived next to two mongrel border collies who loved to bark to hear the sound of their own voices. I despised those dogs and their owners. I moved from a low traffic cul-de-sac to a four lane road next to a primary school. The peace is blissful.

There's a little dog in a unit next to mine. She barks a bit, mostly when she sees someone out the front. Very handy to alert me to courier delivery as my two dogs are typically next to me, so miss the front door activity. She's settling down as she gets older and barking less. But her barking is nothing compared to those bloody border collies.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 30/12/2025 22:08

We're being woken through the night by the border collie from next door @k1233 , so it's interesting to hear your experiences. I'd never thought of it as a barky breed, but clearly it must be.
We are loath to complain because we have a much bigger dog, although she's as quiet as a mouse.

k1233 · 30/12/2025 22:15

@CoubousAndTourmaIet they're a working breed and shouldn't be in backyards. A working border collie will run 80km a day and use their brains when herding. No amount of walking will match that.

What a silly answer. Of course if she puts her house on the market today, it will be bought tomorrow and she can buy a new home and move in on Friday at the latest.

You’ve forgotten the bank holiday it will be Monday!

I agree daft response to move!

foodlovefood · 30/12/2025 22:21

I live close to a house with 7 dogs that bark and whine for hours day and night. Spoke to them numerous times and their excuse is dogs bark, noise is setting them off etc. There are a number of us in the street that have knocked on their door with same response. They now ignore the door.

quiet a few of us went to the council. Did a noise dairy. Council have sent letter and its improved. They also did a home visit. I know hear the owners try and shut up the dogs and they seem to have less dogs now.

it was worth it as my mental health was suffering. I couldn’t work at home or relax. I had to have tv on loud and couldn’t enjoy my garden.

the council haven’t said who it was. But I think as they had about 7 complaints they had to do something. I have been told I don’t need to declare this if selling.

Mine is a working breed also. It isn't being a working breed that makes them bark.
