What do you have in savings if you’re in your forties?

Just that really. I have 32k. I have tried to overpay mortgage though so a lot of money goes into that rather than savings. I feel a bit behind and wonder what changes I should try and make coming into the new year!

Come on, it’s hardly unrealistic that someone is interested in finding out how much money some people at their own stage of life as them have in savings.

And why would anyone tell the truth? It’s so unpleasant & goady.

You could say that about anything people post online. Are you new to online forums? I think your over sensitive reaction is more about your insecurities.

firstofallimadelight · 28/12/2025 07:56

Around 20k, some from saving but mostly from inherited bits of money or gifts.

If you do nothing else please max out your cash ISA allowance and then put the rest of your savings in an instant/easy access savings account. Moneysavingexpert has very clear and helpful guides to savings accounts with good interest rates. You wouldn't be restricted your access to it but you would at least be getting some interest!

And consider overpay your mortgage by a small amount each month rather than in one big chunk, if you'd feel less anxious doing it that way.

Thanks @anotheremmafor taking the time to write. I have screenshot your message and I’ll do exactly as you say.
i have been avoiding thinking about the things that scare me… but I need to do this. Thanks

And No I don’t have income protection insurance - I will commit to doing this before I go back to work in January. Thanks to that person too

pouletvous · 28/12/2025 08:13

£45k but we have just moved and have a large mortgage

1984Winston · 28/12/2025 08:14

41, also in my overdraft, do own my own house though

XWKD · 28/12/2025 08:20

Hallywally · 27/12/2025 20:38

No savings but I own my (modest) house outright.

Me too.

passthepenguins · 28/12/2025 08:21

To get a true picture of where you’re at you need to also consider debt, how much equity is in your house, other assets, pensions etc.

However why random people on the internet need to know is beyond me.

ElderlyCat · 28/12/2025 08:35

I’m 40. Me and DH have about £2000 in our Help to Save account and our three kids have £800 each in their savings accounts. Taken us years to save that up.

Minniliscious · 28/12/2025 08:37

We’re more spenders than savers and are notoriously bad with money! If it wasn’t for an inheritance we’d have nothing but currently have £19,000 left of it in savings. It’s starting to burn a hole though ……

MummyDummyNow · 28/12/2025 08:52

I have eleven billionth pounds and own a village of houses, I’m 28. It’s not all good though as my diamond shoes are a little tight…

As PPs have said, threads like this are to show off and make others feel terrible. Read the room OP there’s a cost of living crisis and we’ve just had Christmas where a lot of people feel huge pressure to spend money they don’t have.

Merlinis · 28/12/2025 08:56

I have quite a bit in shares but I will be spending most of it in coming years. I think we will need to downsize or move to a cheaper area when we get older to release some equity.

nancpmf · 28/12/2025 08:58

I assume the £32k is separate from your pension? And the £32k could cover 6 months of bills? In which case, you’re not behind.

JHound · 28/12/2025 12:15

Notmyreality · 28/12/2025 06:05

To be fair 70% of the questions people ask on MN could be answered by “a quick look online”

I don’t think so.

I always assume that when people talk about savings they don’t mean pensions. I never include my pension. To me that’s a different thing altogether.

Hayleybail · 28/12/2025 19:23

£0, aged 45.
Happy New Year.

LostittoBostik · 28/12/2025 19:28

Same. .£32k, but DH has another £30kish too. So I guess we have a combined £60k plus equity in the house and (small, so far) pensions.

I am 43. DH is older. We’ve just come out of the nursery years so I’m hoping to put away much more in the next 5 year.

cantbejustme · 28/12/2025 19:30

About 13k but 10k of that is where we've put money away for our children (premium bonds) I live in hope.

1k rainy day and 2k for holiday which we haven't booked yet so not amazing really

LostittoBostik · 28/12/2025 19:31

£5 million. Worried I'll never have enough to retire.

Oh bore off. People post about things on their mind, just as they might discuss stuff with their pals. Yes, OP is in an ok situation. But that doesn’t mean they’re not entitled to post.

I see it as separate also, but in the context of this thread to determine if OP is behind or not I think we need to know about the pensions. Someone having £32k in savings but no pension is very different to someone having £5k in savings but large pension. I’d rather be the latter person.
