What do you have in savings if you’re in your forties?

Wjjayso · 27/12/2025 20:12

Just that really. I have 32k. I have tried to overpay mortgage though so a lot of money goes into that rather than savings. I feel a bit behind and wonder what changes I should try and make coming into the new year!

I always find these kind of threads bragging and smug….lots of people don’t have tens of thousands in savings and that’s pretty normal in this day and age. I’m 43 ….i don’t have any 🙄

Same but I am 46!

MaddieJo22 · 27/12/2025 20:19

Too many variables. Do you own your property? What's your pension? What's your LTR? Etc, etc. Sounds boring but without that there's no point in just having a number.

Ohreallyreally23 · 27/12/2025 20:20

That's not the point of the OP's post, is it?

I have a similar amount in savings and am almost the same age. Want to know why? Because I lost a parent young. I am not a high earner. I'd much rather have my parent back than my savings, but it is what it is.

OP, mine is just in a savings account at the moment. But I am going to try and pay a chunk off my mortgage again when allow (the deal is up in a year). I'm also going to speak to an IFA about stocks and shares ISA but low risk and also pension advice as I no longer have a work pension as I am now SE.

Statsquestion1 · 27/12/2025 20:23

40…personally right now 66k. Mortgage of 400k though.dh also has savings. And we have joint savings. Altogether about 200k. But I know that we are not the norm.

DrCoconut · 27/12/2025 20:24

About £115 at the moment. There isn't a k missing.

Zanatdy · 27/12/2025 20:25

66k (48) but most is a house deposit which i’m purchasing soon.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 27/12/2025 20:25

What do you mean, you feel 'behind'? Are you saving up for something you want to buy soon that costs more than you have in savings?

I'm not going to share my position, because it has no bearing on yours.

PennyLaneisinmyheartandmysoul · 27/12/2025 20:25

32p :) go me at 41!! Of course dh is entitled to half…

DorotheaXYZ · 27/12/2025 20:27

My goodness... have you considered cancelling Netflix so you can save a bit extra?

This
When I was in my 40s, I had an authorised overdraft and no savings.
Worked full time and more to keep the boat afloat as a single parent.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/12/2025 20:31

£800, had £2000 before the cat had all her teeth out

mindutopia · 27/12/2025 20:32

In my personal savings, about £2k.

We have a family business though so most money sits in the business rather than personal accounts otherwise we have to pay taxes on it.

We overpay our mortgage by £50k each year though, so have at least that that could be released. We are more than comfortable.

Growlybear83 · 27/12/2025 20:32

I never had a penny in savings and was always a few thousand pounds in debt until I took my pension lump sum about six years ago. It really didn’t ever worry me because we had plenty of credit available on cards and overdrafts if needed.

The replies have honestly saved this thread 😂
40 I am also overdrawn and have credit card debt… waheyyyy.

namechangetheworld · 27/12/2025 20:34

Nothing, and I'm 40.

The only time I've ever had savings was when I was still at home, saving for a mortgage. And half of that was from a redundancy!

If there's a terrible emergency, we have credit cards and overdrafts, or worse case scenario, two sets of parents to help out.

Fbfbfvfvv · 27/12/2025 20:36

Mid 40s - zero.

The fact you think 32k means you are ‘behind’ means you are obviously either very privileged and have no real concept of money or you are trying to put fear into people like me so we feel extra crap.

haveaword · 27/12/2025 20:36

We have less than a third of the house value left on mortgage

Savings for retirement in a ISA which would also cover 10 months bills

Only recently started saving and increased pension contributions

Winterburn · 27/12/2025 20:36

39yo, less than 10 years left on my mortgage (sole name) £50k savings, £6k in current account.

Not amazing, but secure at the moment.

No I don’t earn mega bucks, didn’t even earn over £20k per year til I was 29!! Higher rate tax payer now, have been for about 5 years. If that gives some context. I just don’t tend to fritter money.

AliasGrape · 27/12/2025 20:37

Nothing, we spent everything when we moved house this year, but we’ve done it without a mortgage.

We’re very average earners. Some inheritance, some luck in that DH bought the house I moved into at the right time with a low mortgage which we were then able to overpay once I moved in, so we paid it off before we moved. And some
DH just being very frugal and a very good saver which I never was before I met him. I know how lucky we are.
