Baylis and Harding?

Why do people on MN hate it so much? I am thinking I’d like to buy something nicer than Aldi dupe carex for our downstairs loo and B&H seems like a reasonable idea? No?
AIBU to buy Baylis and Harding hand soap?

I don’t mind it ! I also am partial to a yaknee candle, I have the big pink one, can’t remember the name, and it smells lovely and really fills the room, it’s my favourite !

HoppityBun · 26/12/2025 20:35

The gym i go to has a really nice smelling B & H handwashing and I look forward to using it. Once I stayed in a hotel where they had B&H products and the shampoo was brilliant

MN just showing its raging snobbery

Yes, it’s this.

I find it hilarious when people insist that they can’t use it because it gives them thrush/makes them itch/whatever, but then say that they love Molton Brown or L’Occitance or whatever, which are just as heavily perfumed and have the same base ingredients.

Baylis & Harding is a pleasant cheapish shower gel. Not especially exciting but also no worse for you than any other product. If it was decanted into an expensive bottle most Mumsnetters would cream their knickers over it.

AngelinaFibres · 26/12/2025 20:39

It falls into the ' fine to buy for yourself to put in the downstairs loo but not something you'd want as a gift'. Bit like moopig and funky pigeon cards. Zero thought/ zero effort/ zero care but dies the job.

RandomUsernameHere · 26/12/2025 20:41

YANBU, it seems to attract a disproportionate amount of hatred on MN.

hyggetyggedotorg · 26/12/2025 20:43

No snobbery but the shower gel is just gloop that smells of nothing & doesn’t lather.

Not for me.

I agree. Also gives me an itchy bum. I like the hand wash tho. I use dettol soap in the shower

It’s vegan, made in Britain, by the same people who make Molton Brown.

No it isn't. Molton and Brown is owned by the Kao Corporation, B&H is owned by Adrian Slater and Tania Fossey, and named after their grandparents. They are based out of the Midlands.

Charlize43 · 26/12/2025 20:56

B&H... I can't even bring myself to say the words (unless the curse strikes again as I was already given one set for Christmas)... always brings back memories of throwing up in pub toilets... pubs trying to be gastro pubs. That... and unwanted Secret Santa gifts. I always thought a cool idea for a horror film could be centred around & B&H gift set that is passed around... Peter Strickland could do something with it.

ManyPigeons · 26/12/2025 21:05

It’s nice enough to buy for yourself. I don’t like it as a gift because who wants hand soap as a gift? And it’s something you can chuck in your trolley at the supermarket.

But for buying myself it’s nice - I also have Aldi soap otherwise.

It’s cheap and nasty shite.

I take it you are a millionaire and can afford only the finest quality toiletries?

I am not a millionaire. There is a middle ground. HTH.

GoAwayNaughtyPigeon · 26/12/2025 21:17

I like soap and bath gifts so idc 😂 one of my dear friends bought me a small token B&H gift when I joined a new job in early Dec, I'd missed out on secret santa and was too late to join in. Didn't mind obviously not the end of the world, but she bought me a token B&H gift, wrapped it and left it under the work secret santa tree so I'd not feel left out on secret santa day and I've fond memories of B&H since I suppose

TigerRag · 26/12/2025 21:21

Only used it when it's the one used in hotels.(IIRC, premier Inn have it in theirs) It's nothing amazing. But don't get the hate for it

I have asked for some body stuff for Christmas (which I'll get tomorrow) and asked for Dove. But wouldn't be that disappointed if it was B&H

NoSoupForU · 26/12/2025 21:26

I find it odd to have strong feelings about soap.

OtherS · 26/12/2025 21:38

I tried it and found it to be a really bad soap, it seemed to just slide off my hands without doing any cleaning. Needed to use an awful lot, and to sort of balance it carefully so it didn't just slop off down the sink. It was odd. And I'm definitely not a soap snob, I usually use Palmolive! But I would probably consider it the same level as Palmolive (but less effective), and would be equally offended if I received it as a gift. A hand soap gift needs to be minimum Molton Brown IMO, preferably Aesop or equivalent.

Of course there is a middle ground and everyone is entitled to like or not like Baylus and Harding.

I was just irritated by the off hand dismissal of the whole brand as " cheap and nasty shite" without any reasoning as to why or any acknowledgement that other people might not have the money to buy better quality products.

Cadenza12 · 26/12/2025 21:44

I've some in the downstairs loo. I thought it was one up from own brand! It's rather nice ☺️

Lavalampbubble · 26/12/2025 21:53

I get two Christmas presents. One from my niece and one from my nephew. If someone spared a thought for me and bought me a B&H whatever I'd be touched, grateful and thank them for thinking of me. I certainly wouldn't be turning my nose up at the 'quality' of the present. Whatever happened to 'it's the thought that counts'?

intrepidpanda · 26/12/2025 21:58

It is fine as a day to day hand soap but there is just so much nicer out there.
I hate waste so end up trying to use it up so I can get onto something nicer so it's always 'in my way' of nicer stuff.

edwinbear · 26/12/2025 21:59

I have the handwash in my kitchen, and all the bathrooms. There is plenty of choice of bottles (the grey one matches my kitchen, the brown one matches the downstairs loo etc) you literally wash the soap down the plug hole. As long as it gets my hands clean (and the bottles match my decor) I give no fucks about the smell. I do buy decent hand cream though and care more about that as I’m not washing it away.
