Baylis and Harding?

Why do people on MN hate it so much? I am thinking I’d like to buy something nicer than Aldi dupe carex for our downstairs loo and B&H seems like a reasonable idea? No?
AIBU to buy Baylis and Harding hand soap?

MN just showing its raging snobbery

SleepingisanArt · 26/12/2025 20:01

On MN it's usually seen as a 'thoughtless' gift as you can buy it in the supermarket so obviously didn't think much about a present. If you want to buy it and use it just go ahead - who cares what MN thinks?

helpfulperson · 26/12/2025 20:02

I really like it. It hits the right spot between decent quality but not ridiculous price.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 26/12/2025 20:06

I had some stuff in the past that didn't really smell of much but the handsoaps seem nice, if you are buying for yourself there shouldn't be a problem! Plus there will be all these unwanted ones on Vinted you can snap up!

brilliantjustbrilliant · 26/12/2025 20:06

I love a gift of bath bits.

LaurieFairyCake · 26/12/2025 20:09

I’m definitely snobby about it, but I am about Molton Brown too and that’s the company it’s copying. I think they’re both dreadful, loads of chemicals and SLS.

Zanatdy · 26/12/2025 20:10

I always use the hand wash, and don’t care what Mn thinks about it. So odd to hate a soap.

MrsDoomsPatterson1 · 26/12/2025 20:10

It’s lovely - perfectly fine for loo

Catwoman8 · 26/12/2025 20:13

I have no issue with using it , but I hate these soap sets as a gift! I am perfectly happy with using a cheap supermarket or carex hand-wash at home. Its a boring , thoughtless gift dressed up fancy packaging, that's the issue with it.

hardtocare · 26/12/2025 20:14

I like it! My kids insist on the carex character soaps which I don’t hate but B&H for grown ups perhaps 😂

escape · 26/12/2025 20:14

Not snobbery at all from me for one very good reason. The quality of B& H is absolute dogshit. I couldn't care less what brand I wash myself with, but I do need & expect it to contain some modicum of soap and foaming agent. To add insult to injury, their business model is now to attempt toduplicate other decent brands packaging & Scents. PMSL when I noticed their latest 'Tom Ford' attempts. If you buy B&H you may as well buy Tesco smart price 30p shower gel.

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 26/12/2025 20:14

I like some of it, and I’d buy it for my bathroom but I definitely wouldn’t want it as a present

mumofoneAloneandwell · 26/12/2025 20:15

😄😄 its rubbish! Its not luxury like it pretends to be and it irks me

I shop at asda, not a snob at all!

Catholica · 26/12/2025 20:15

It’s absolutely fine. I think people are rude about it because the branding is designed to make you think it’s fancy when it isn’t really, but that’s true of a lot of things.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 26/12/2025 20:17

It’s vegan, made in Britain, by the same people who make Molton Brown.

ContentedAlpaca · 26/12/2025 20:18

I have the soap in my bathroom. I wouldn't use a gift set as I tend to only use natural stuff for bathing, lotion etc. so it would be wasted on me as a gift. Carex tears our hands to shreds

MCF86 · 26/12/2025 20:21

As other have said - as a gift it says "I felt obliged to give something, but not enough to think about the sort of thing you'd like".
I don't care what soap is in my, or anyone elses, bathroom though.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/12/2025 20:22

MN just showing its raging snobbery

This.

Screamingabdabz · 26/12/2025 20:25

There is nothing wrong with it per se. I love the dark amber and fig hand wash but I wouldn’t give it to someone for a present. If I use it as an everyday item, it’s not really special enough to gift.

Egglio · 26/12/2025 20:26

I like it, but I'm not really a brands person. It's just fucking soap. I have more to worry about. And at least it will get used up over the year.

If you hate it, donate it. If you are allergic, perfectly reasonable, just let the giver know for next time - you're both grown ups. If you just stick your nose up in the air, then be grateful someone at least thought of you.

Justcheeseatthispoint · 26/12/2025 20:26

It’s cheap and nasty shite.

TheIceBear · 26/12/2025 20:26

I actually quite like the hand washes but it’s sort of on the same wavelength as Yankee candles now. A generic thoughtless gift.

comoatoupeira · 26/12/2025 20:27

They would like it if it was the same product and packaging but more expensive.

Pineapplewaves · 26/12/2025 20:29

I always buy their liquid hand soap, it comes in nice colours and scents and I like the limited addition seasonal ones. The last time I had a bottle of their shower gel it was like jelly and wouldn’t lather so I wouldn’t buy that again or any gift set that contains it.

ScaryM0nster · 26/12/2025 20:29

I really like it for hand soap for home.

I’d be underwhelmed by it as a centre stage Christmas gift. In the same way I’d be underwhelmed by a decent tea towel, or a bottle of proper fairy.

Nothing wrong with it, but also not prime gift territory.
