To think of going to Tunisia or Turkey for a holiday alone?

I’m a woman in my mid twenties. You can get an all inclusive hotel in Tunisia or Turkey for under £500. All I want is a cheap week in the sun. AIBU to go? My family all think I’d be stupid because it’s a risk. But it’s all I want

I wouldn’t do Tunisia. I thought people were exaggerating the harassment women receive. They weren’t. It was off the scale and that was with a male friend in tow. Edited to add this was within a resort

Totally agree with this. I went in my twenties, I’m brunette and never let go of my boyfriend’s hand. The harassment from men was off the scale awful!! Even worse when I spoke back to them in French and they realised I understood what they’d been saying. Never ever again.

And the human rights of lack thereof for women in Turkey similarly puts me off. Both countries treat women very very badly and for that reason I just wouldn’t.

i do wonder then if the reason Tunisia is so cheap is because of the fact women get harassed so badly there…

Yeah Greece is also an option. I just want something that’s cheap winter sun

Greece isn’t warm in the winter. Mexico I would say is your best bet. Hotter than Europe, safe (I’ve been a few times alone and had zero issues) cheap on last minute deals. Bit of a shit flight but worth it if you can go for 10 days…..

Wouldn’t go back to Tunisia if you paid me. I quite literally had men coming up my husband trying to negotiate how many camels he would take in exchange for a night of my ‘use’. I’m not particularly stunning or blonde but the level of harassment and unwanted attention I received (even with DH by my side) was absolutely disgusting

Pretty sure they've been paying with cash and credit cards for years.

How long ago was this that they were offering to pay with camels?

Male colleague went to Tunisia recently with his partner. The evening before they were flying home he started getting D+V. He was terribly ill and off work for 2 whole weeks. Eventually a stool sample confirmed Salmonella. He finally returned to work looking about 10 years older and having lost a ton of weight (he's fine now). Just another thing to consider. I think Tunisia and Egypt seem to be particularly bad for food poisoning / tummy bugs.

Depends how much cock you want, many a willing waiter in both places.

How fucking rude. I have been to Turkey alone numerous times. I go for the food, the scenery, the beaches and the sun. Not cock as you so delightfully call it

TheIceBear · 26/12/2025 20:32

I’m sure it depends what part of Turkey you are in but I was there as a teenager in a resort type beach place and I found a lot of the men absolutely horrendous I have to say. I would feel completely unsafe there on my own unless I planned on never leaving the hotel. I haven’t been to Tunisia so I cannot comment on that.

Bushmillsbabe · 26/12/2025 20:42

I have travelled all over the world, (including through areas of civil unrest with a charity), and the places I have felt most unsafe were Tunisia and Morocco, as others have said, the attitude to women there is horrendous. In other areas there may be an individual robber etc, but others wouod likely come to your aid, as they did for me in Brazil, India, Vietnam etc. But in Morocco when robbed and groped we had other guys laughing and also trying it on.

Turkey would be fine, would not recommended Tunisia.
Tunisia is a long way off from modern standards and there really is not a lot going on at all. They really struggle with tourism I suspect as it’s so backwards. Turkey seems European modern in comparison

About 30 years ago! Haven’t been back to see what the preferred currency for borrowing your wife is nowadays..

It won't be warm enough in Greece Turkey or Tunisia in winter to sit by an outside pool!
You need to think more Canary Islands.

Neveranynamesleft · 26/12/2025 23:01

I would not go to Tunisia or Turkey as a single traveller even if it was free.

TheTamerShrew · 26/12/2025 23:09

I wouldn't go to either as a single woman, especially Tunisia (I wouldn't ever go back to Tunisia)
