To think of going to Tunisia or Turkey for a holiday alone?

I’m a woman in my mid twenties. You can get an all inclusive hotel in Tunisia or Turkey for under £500. All I want is a cheap week in the sun. AIBU to go? My family all think I’d be stupid because it’s a risk. But it’s all I want

I really didn’t enjoy Tunisia and we stayed in our hotel pretty much all of the time. I still got harassed, and I was with my boyfriend. Really unpleasant experience.

Even in the hotel???

No that's a bad idea.
Go to southern Italy , Spain or Greece instead.

FryingPam · 26/12/2025 16:40

Not leaving the hotel is fine. Otherwise no, you’ll be harassed without end as a female alone.

I've been to Turkey once by myself and Tunisia several times. I went out and about and wasn't hassled much. I found it worse in Egypt.

ibuprofenhead · 26/12/2025 16:49

lve been to both; I wouldn’t go to Tunisia alone, loads of predatory men. I was in my 20s with my now husband and I got hassled loads, I hated it. Turkey, absolutely fine. I’ve been to Dalyan, Antalya, Cirali and the Blue Lagoon and didn’t have any problems.

Doseofreality · 26/12/2025 16:41

Depends how much cock you want, many a willing waiter in both places.

She hasn't suggested she's looking for that. How unpleasant.

ColinOfficeTrolley · 26/12/2025 16:56

My 15yo niece also got harassed in Tunisia when she went with her mum and dad. Sounds like a vile place.

As a woman alone I would go neither of these places.

Drivinghomeforchristmas25 · 26/12/2025 16:56

I have been to both alone and as a couple and would not recommend either. Greece/Spain/Italy/Malta would be my choice if I was travelling alone. Mexico too if your budget can stretch to long haul.

Yeah Greece is also an option. I just want something that’s cheap winter sun

I go on solo holidays of the type you describe but I wouldn’t go to those countries on my own at your age. If I had to pick I’d definitely pick Turkey over Tunisia but honestly, I’d avoid both countries on my own.

No-one on Mumsnet is going to tell you, you shouldn't go on holiday alone.

Why shouldn't she?

Even in the hotel???

Yea I found people got into the hotel to try to sell things in the restaurants or by the pool, there was a beach as part of the hotel which had the same issue but worse. They would be eventually asked to leave but as it’s prolific it can be difficult to stop it continually happening.

I dont think either Turkey or Tunisia is hot enough for lying by the pool.
Marrakech ( outside Medina ) or Cape Verde?

Newsenmum · 26/12/2025 17:10

Choose turkiye it’s stunning im so jealous

limegreenheart · 26/12/2025 17:18

I've spent time in Turkey solo and while there is definitely a special level of harassment for solo women, I found it by far the worst in Istanbul (especially, but not exclusively, Sultanahmet) and on the Med coast around Izmir. Prepare to be firm about rejection and don't be afraid to be a little rude; you might be absolutely fine on a resort or you might still get unwanted attention. I was surprised by how much colder/more changeable the weather was than I expected (in March/April) - not that many reliably warm and sunny days. If I were you I would prioritise checking (1) reviews of the specific complex, if you're going to be spending most of your time there - on some sites like Tripadvisor you can filter for solo travelers' reviews and (2) weather forecast & historical temps, if you're reliant on lots of sun.

grooveraidiator · 26/12/2025 17:19

i went to a friend's wedding in oludeniz /fethiye and was alone for a couple of days before some friends joined me. This was about 10 years ago and i stayed in an international style hotel with tui etc guests. walked around the little town area by the seafront in oludeniz with no harassment and went on one excursion. felt safe and fine. i'm cautious and quite anti-social though!

bonquiqui · 26/12/2025 17:22

Have done nice sit and do nothing AI in Greek Islands and Gran Canaria. I personally wouldn’t go to Turkey or Tunisia as all I’ve ever heard from women is it’s constant harassment and not taking no for an answer, even in resorts

Forty85 · 26/12/2025 17:26

We went to Liberty Fabay in Turkey, I'd absolutely go there alone.. I wouldn't go to Tunisia alone or with others.

Well she should.

That's why I said no-one on Mumsnet is going to tell her she shouldn't?

Please reconsider Tunisia. If you search mumsnet for worst holidays Tunisia wins hands down.
I went and barely left the hotel because almost every person we encounter outside was horrible scammers.

In the hotel the barman was fuming at me for drinking because I was a woman. The lifeguard was pestering me whilst I was with my boyfriend. The 2 men in the hotel shop tried to lock us in to sell us a £200 silver spider thing, I had to really shout at them to fuck off. I will never go back there.
Turkey is lovely and the people were lovely, I would be very happy to travel solo there.

Oh we went there, it was lovely, also went to Liberty Signa next door, also lovely!
Tunisia is a whole different world to Turkey from my experience.

tiredofchristmas · 26/12/2025 17:41

My husband was asked how much he’d want to be paid to let him have a night with me in Tunisia. Utterly horrendous. Staying at home would be a far more pleasant way to spend your annual leave.

WhineAndWine1 · 26/12/2025 17:42

Turkey. It was my first solo holiday a week of sunbathing from 8am then eatting and drink with a mooch round the shops. Loved it

MrTwisterHasABlister · 26/12/2025 17:47

Turkey - have been twice on my own and stayed at the same very quiet, very beautiful hotel. Chilled by the pool, wandered to town a couple of times, read loads of books, slept like a log. The place I’ve been will cost more than £500 though.

This is why punctuation is important.
