Am I the only Guardian reader who is fed up with all these no names presented like they are celebrities? Example: "Wouldn’t it be lovely if I could shut up?’ Meet Lola Petticrew, TV’s most fearless actor" - who TF is this person?

Basically, as my title. Its not the first time I'm reading an article about some one I never heard of who is presented as someone famous. This article really took the bisquit. Who is this person? They? WTF? Why does it matter what THEY think, say or do?

Or am I being unreasonable and this is actually someone who IS famous?

‘Wouldn’t it be lovely if I could shut up?’ Meet Lola Petticrew, TV’s most fearless actor

The award-winning star of Say Nothing and Trespasses refuses to play the fame game when they can fight government inaction. They open up on making amazing TV … and why morals matter more than nice handbags

To be honest the whole of the Guardian winds me up these days.

verycloakanddaggers · 26/12/2025 15:15

She's had lead roles in some fairly big recent dramas.

I don't understand your issue - if you're not interested, don't read the article?

I read it precisely because I was interested! But I never head of any of the shows mentioned, or this person. It irritated me a bit as there are literally hundreds of people who I would enjoy reading about, and instead there is an article about this girl.

Isn't it just a PR vehicle - like comedians appearing in quiz shows (there was an Australian one on Mastermind who I'm pretty sure will be on everything in the new year - so there's bound to be a Guardian fluff piece like this attached to her soon enough, if there hasn't already been one)?

The guardian isn't tailored to your personal, individual preferences.

Well that's on you, because the dramas she has been in recently are widely known.

Well they are probably trying to be more relatable and appeal to as many people as possible, like every other news outlet that's had to dumb down.

Why not moan to them though if you feel this strongly, rather than moan about them on a different forum?

DappledThings · 26/12/2025 15:34

The fact that it's phrased as "meet" implies to me they think most people won't have heard of her before, not the reverse.

And, may I add, both excellent. Give them a watch, OP, then you shall know who Lola is.

The headline also says 'Meet Lola Petticrew'.

It’s ok OP MN is a safe space, you can admit it’s all the they/them bollocks that annoyed you.

All of it. Random person with hair straight from the 90s I've never heard of. "Award -winning" dramas I never seen even mentioned anywhere. The assumption I'm supposed to find this woman interesting. Everything about the article is fucking irritating.

I guess I'm just a grumpy old bitch! )))

It's not strange at all. You're complaining that the Guardian has chosen to publish an interview with this actress, because you don't know who they are and would rather read about someone else. But not every article in a paper will be tailored to your preferences.

700,000 people watched Trespasses, so it's likely at least some of those are interested in an interview with Petticrew. just because you're not one of the hundreds of thousands of people who watched any of Petticrew's shows doesn't mean the Guardian should run a feature on them.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 26/12/2025 15:45

I don’t know why the OP’s getting critical comments. It’s a common feature of life that complete nobodies - like influencers, crappy pop newcomers and minor soap actors - get TV time and newspaper column inches. Why? They’re here today, gone tomorrow, and totally uninteresting in the meantime.

I’ve never heard of this actor and wouldn’t have bothered with the article. But I’d feel justified in questioning why micro-celebrities get so much attention.

WaffleParty · 26/12/2025 15:45

It is poor form of the Guardian not to contact you first to make sure you’ve heard of someone before interviewing them.

localnotail · 26/12/2025 15:45

Checked out her shows - mainly Ch 4 which I never watch/ have no access to. One is Disney Plus - might have a look ))

But this is an up-and-coming actress who has just been in a widely-watched and much-discussed drama, who has more big projects in the pipeline.

They are not any of these: influencers, crappy pop newcomers and minor soap actors

Holdonforsummer · 26/12/2025 15:50

Yea the title says ‘Meet…..’. They are not expecting you to know who she is. Wow, grumpy much?!

HessianSack · 26/12/2025 15:50

YABU for reading the Guardian. I’ve never heard of her either. She probably paid them for the publicity.

I am a quintessential Gurdian reader, have always been. Its not just this article - pretty much every similar feature they do is about someone obscure. I assume, like someone said previously, its a PR thing. Like I actually googled who this Lola was and what shows she's been in - and may actually watch it.

Maybe my problem is not watching any shows on live TV - or not watching any TV apart from streaming channels where I actually pick what I want to watch. So I'm not being force-fed stuff I've never heard of - admittedly, some of it may be good but I cant be arsed watching hours of crap to encounter something good. None of my friends watched these shows, either. So it is kind of obscure niche thing to me.

But still, the patronising tone is fucking annoying.
