Am I the only Guardian reader who is fed up with all these no names presented like they are celebrities? Example: "Wouldn’t it be lovely if I could shut up?’ Meet Lola Petticrew, TV’s most fearless actor" - who TF is this person?

Basically, as my title. Its not the first time I'm reading an article about some one I never heard of who is presented as someone famous. This article really took the bisquit. Who is this person? They? WTF? Why does it matter what THEY think, say or do?

Or am I being unreasonable and this is actually someone who IS famous?

‘Wouldn’t it be lovely if I could shut up?’ Meet Lola Petticrew, TV’s most fearless actor

The award-winning star of Say Nothing and Trespasses refuses to play the fame game when they can fight government inaction. They open up on making amazing TV … and why morals matter more than nice handbags

You don’t think the article should feature stories on people you personally have never heard of in shows you personally have never watched?

Sounds like you have Main Character syndrome.

There are loads of public figures I have never heard of but I accept that others will have.

This makes me think of people mad that Bad Bunny is performing at the Super Bowl because they personally are not familiar with him.

The irony is that the stereotypical Guardian reader not only not watch live TV, but probably dont even have one!

The guardian isn't tailored to your personal, individual preferences.

This!

I am a quintessential Gurdian reader, have always been. Its not just this article - pretty much every similar feature they do is about someone obscure. I assume, like someone said previously, its a PR thing. Like I actually googled who this Lola was and what shows she's been in - and may actually watch it.

Maybe my problem is not watching any shows on live TV - or not watching any TV apart from streaming channels where I actually pick what I want to watch. So I'm not being force-fed stuff I've never heard of - admittedly, some of it may be good but I cant be arsed watching hours of crap to encounter something good. None of my friends watched these shows, either. So it is kind of obscure niche thing to me.

But still, the patronising tone is fucking annoying.

If you personally don't watch much TV, so obviously won't know much about TV or those in TV dramas. But that doesn't make TV actors 'nobodies'.

Trespasses has been discussed everywhere.

JHound · 26/12/2025 15:57

CremeEggThief · 26/12/2025 15:31

Well they are probably trying to be more relatable and appeal to as many people as possible, like every other news outlet that's had to dumb down.

Why not moan to them though if you feel this strongly, rather than moan about them on a different forum?

Why is appealing to a broad spectrum of people “dumbing down”.

OK cool I missed that. No one I know have ever mentioned it - and we do chat with my mates about latest good dramas.

I might have a look at the other one, if I have time))

All of it. Random person with hair straight from the 90s I've never heard of. "Award -winning" dramas I never seen even mentioned anywhere. The assumption I'm supposed to find this woman interesting. Everything about the article is fucking irritating.

I guess I'm just a grumpy old bitch! )))

Edited

It's the 'old' that's doing it, not the 'grumpy' or the 'bitch'.

The world is crammed with famous people I've never heard of. All actresses look the same to me. I never know anyone on any 'Now Celebrities Have a Go' tv show.

This is not because - as some people my age insist - the people who are famous today are less talented and less deserving than those who were successful when I was young. ("Who's that woman cooking on telly? She's not a patch on Graham Kerr, the Galloping Gourmet!") No, it's because I'm not paying attention these days. That's not a fault, but neither is it a virtue.

It's just age.

What a strange comment.

You created this thread to whine that the Guardian is not tailored personally to you and things you are personally familiar with.

muognob · 26/12/2025 16:00

I mean, I've heard of her, and think she's been decent in the things I've seen, but she's fighting a losing battle if she thinks anyone is going to take her they/them-ness seriously. Maybe she should stop taking roles for women if she feels that strongly she's not one.

LorenzoCalzone · 26/12/2025 16:01

I quite like the Guardian, in fact I subscribe to the digital version as I am trying to find objective good quality journalism. My main gripe with it is that it's heavy on Australian news! I checked my app is for the UK version yet I get multiple stories for Australia?!?

You're missing some good drama if you avoid the regular channels (which you can stream).

(I haven't watched Trespasses myself, just seen it talked about a lot - including being reviewed in the Guardian!)

I don’t know why the OP’s getting critical comments. It’s a common feature of life that complete nobodies - like influencers, crappy pop newcomers and minor soap actors - get TV time and newspaper column inches. Why? They’re here today, gone tomorrow, and totally uninteresting in the meantime.

I’ve never heard of this actor and wouldn’t have bothered with the article. But I’d feel justified in questioning why micro-celebrities get so much attention.

This woman is none of those. She’s an actress that has appeared in dramas watched by people that are not the OP

700,000 people is not that many. I've never even heard of the show that she is in. It's no wonder that few people read the Guardian. Most of what they print is depressing and sad and when they do print something more light-hearted, it's stuff like this about an actress on a TV show that very few people watch.
