Who got the worst gift?

arcticpandas · 25/12/2025 21:47

Very very lighthearted. Some people are starving so no whining about not getting the perfect gift. Instead looking at it from a humoristic perspective: who got the worst gift in our family? Please add yours as well..
In our family;

  1. DH got 200 ml cologne while he wanted/needed 100 ml to bring with him on airplane (travels every week).
  2. I got fine chocolate with alcohol from uncle again (everyone has told him I do not like it but he just can't get it). He even added "I know you can't get enough of those". Not passive aggressive- that would be sinister. He really likes me and is convinced I like them.

Also got a large hand bag from DH. Not wildly expensive but still- the cords are too thin- I keep loads of stuff in my handbag. He bought it 3 months ago so can't return it.

  1. DS1 got a sort of a travel bag for mobile Phone to attach on bike from an aunt. He hasn't been riding his bike for years.

4.DS2 got a shirt of his favourite team that was so large on him it looked like a dress. Can't return it. Bil said he will grow in it😅

  1. Dh got Mil a a stylish coat size L. It was too small. Yet Mil isn't a big woman. I'm a medium and it was perfect on me but she's got bigger breasts. She wasn't happy about large being too small.. didn't say anything because very polite but it was obvious she was unhappy.
  1. Aunt got a big box of chocolate. She's on wli and barely eats anything. Def not chocolate. She discreetly passed them on to dh.

So who wins?

As I'm reading these and had a good laugh, I feel I'm guilty of some of them. Just wondering what gifts people would really like to receive? Not really expensive ones though. Just gifts from friends or colleagues that don't cost the earth?

Lostatsea10 · 26/12/2025 09:28

My gifts from my DH were lovely but my stocking was awful and I genuinely don’t know what he was thinking (he clearly wasn’t). I got the usual chocolates etc and then a ‘find my keys’ beeper (I’ve never lost my keys), a mini rechargeable desk/keyboard vacuum (I don’t work), dinosaur rubber cable end protectors (I’m not 8!) and that was it.

My DH got me a fake USA military medal (Purple Heart….with cluster!) for outstanding services to the family. I actually thought it was hilarious as we both like old Steven Seagal action films and always joke about this, but he says he tried a few times to explain to people before Xmas what he got me & it never landed. Judging by the baffled faces of our family yesterday morning, I don’t think I’ll be telling anyone else either

Oh, i need to know where he got this!

Long unneeded back story but my DH is currently doing 100% of household stuff, which I am very appreciative of, as he finally gets just how much I normally do. However, he insists on giving me a daily run down of tasks completed. I started taking the piss and awarding him a medal for domestic valour but all I had was old running ones. A purple heart would be an amazing upgrade!

My sister got me exactly what I wanted, the new Ninja mini chopper, a small food processor that will be ideal for chopping veg for salads, crushing ice for my drinks and making sauces in small quantities. My daughter works for Ninja/Shark so gets a fantastic staff discount ( my house is full of their products) so I assume she didn’t think she had spent enough so bought me another gadget. The cordless smoothie maker with a travel flask, very nice if you like smoothies ( I don’t drink milk or cream so smoothies are not my thing) and to all intents and purposes it works just like the mini chopper she also bought! It’s a bit odd for her as she is usually brilliant at buying gifts for me and that is not easy!

However, I’m thinking if I crush ice with frozen berries it will make a really tasty mixer for my gin! I go to a monthly gin club where we sample different gins and enjoy a chat and I’m sure it will go down a storm if I take it with me! The range of interests in my WI is extensive, it’s not just jam and Jerusalem!

No particularly bad gifts in my family. Probably the the least useful one was some flavoured coffee syrups that DH got from MIL. I literally threw out a set nearly the same a few weeks ago that had been the cupboard for about 5 years. We just don't use them.

Don't chuck them - give them to a food bank or a homeless shelter or women's refuge. They would probably all be glad for some flavoured coffee.

DH and I bought each other tickets to the same comedian, same date etc. Whoops. Will hopefully sell the spares 😂

Pass the joy on and take friends 😀

NorthernDancer · 26/12/2025 09:32

We've been together almost 25 years.

DH is well aware of my ongoing struggles with alcohol. He should also know by now that I much prefer dark chocolate.

I received a bottle of gin and 4 milk chocolate oranges.

I can't even say anything as he has incurable cancer and I don't even know whether he will still be here next year.

What WI? Hopefully you’re close enough for yours to be a second one 🤣

DS got 2 identical Lynx gift sets. One from us and one from MIL. He took it all in good humour as he’s 16 and actually loves the stuff. His view was well, I have plenty to keep me going for the year 🤣

What a lovely son you have 😊

TallShip · 26/12/2025 09:38

So sorry @NorthernDancerfor both your struggles and your DHs.

What, like literally crying?

I salute you. I wish I was that easy to please with comedy.

This was such a bitchy, unnecessary reply. What did you gain from it?

Charlize43 · 26/12/2025 09:41

I had a unique present from an ex work colleague, sent all the way from Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland to London... and I ripped open the heavy cardboard box excitedly thinking, 'what on earth could this be?' only to feel like I'd just be slammed into a wall when I recognised it as the Xmas, de rigueur, Baylis & Harding Hand Wash & Lotion gift set!

She could have sent me just a card or a voucher and saved herself a fortune in postage.

I will write her a thank you note and send her an M&S voucher, but sadly her gift is in my pile of things destined for the Cat's Protection charity shop in the New Year.

RedxRobin · 26/12/2025 09:43

I got a truly hideous pair of slippers which are so ugly they’re actually amazing. Sadly they’re too small for me as I would actually wear them.

DD was regifted by my DSiS the birthday present I had given DN. Luckily DD was thrilled with it which is just as well as I had bought her a similar version for Xmas 😂

TallShip · 26/12/2025 09:43

I received lots of make up. I rarely use it but, the irony is, 4 of the 🎁 I bought for loved ones to give to me! I must have been feeling very ugly those shopping days 🤣 I did have a chuckle to myself when the penny dropped! And ignored the very confused faces of my loved ones.

I got a £15 gift voucher to Just Eat from my DH. I got him a £400 game console so we’re basically equal.

Fuuuuuuuck. 😬

winterbluess · 25/12/2025 21:55

Mine have all been lovely, but I did get the same pair of shoes twice from my amazon wishlist 🤣 they don't know each other so will never find out!

That’s mad - did they not actually use the wishlist to order? The gifts disappear when ordered if you do it right 🤣

Refresssher · 26/12/2025 09:47

I got prescription swimming goggles.

I don't wear glasses or need a prescription.

I do need some swimming goggles though!

Hfiajfbdoflv · 26/12/2025 09:52

I got a book about how to lose weight from my PIL. I’m a size 8!

KindnessIsKey123 · 26/12/2025 09:53

I think I might be winning so far.

My husband and I are on the verge of burnout. My MIL bought us tickets to stressful and intense play an hours drive away and has promised to babysit. They don’t live locally.

This means I have to clean out my guest room which is currently used for storage for them to stay. Host them the day & the evening until we leave, she never stops talking and gets up at 5am so I’ll have my four year-old running around at 5am after we’ve driven back after 11 pm from the miserable play we don’t want to see.

I have no idea why she’s bought them. The tickets are expensive and nonrefundable.

LittleCarrot12 · 26/12/2025 09:54

I’d say MIL in your scenario. For me it was an advent calendar on Christmas Day. Had to sit and open 24 days. Fab!

Katemax82 · 26/12/2025 09:54

Regarding the cologne get a travel atomiser for it. The too small coat is probably the lamest gift

arcticpandas · 26/12/2025 09:54

Mum2Fergus · 26/12/2025 08:53

Nope. It was from SIL.

Make sure to get her a staue of a cow next year. Get one from vinted with chipped ears.

I got some old lady slippers and a super warm blanket from my DP and a few generic bits from my Amazon wish list which I mostly keep updated for the dcs to choose gifts from.
Overall he spent less than £100 on me - I'm not bothered about the amount of money he spent. However I know he's spent £450 on the other woman which I've recently discovered. He's booked a weekend away in a beautiful cottage for them both. They are going this weekend. He doesn't know that I know but he will when he gets back!!

Ouch 🤗

Katemax82 · 26/12/2025 09:57

I get so few gifts and my husband gets what I ask for. My mil got me a bayliss and Harding set (I thought it would be lame but it's midnight cherry which smells like tom ford lost cherry)
The stepson who buys my husband and I gifts always gets me a Nivea set but I like them cos you can never get enough toiletries. I didn't get one the previous 2 years and I wanted them!
My husband let me choose my stuff but yesterday went on my Amazon wishlist and ordered me a perfume off there as a surprise extra for some reason (I'm glad cos despite having 200 perfumes it's one I've not tried)

A romantic weekend away in London with partner, lovely I thought, because I usually have to take charge of booking everything when we go away.

Turns out he's booked us in a 'capsule hotel'. So separate rooms, in separate areas of the building. The room itself is actually just a bed you crawl into and a shutter you pull down. Like sleeping in a self storage facility. Don't worry though, apparently he'll buy me a combination lock so I can lock myself in and feel safe...... FML

Goodness I would go and stay in the nearest swanky hotel and send him a short video tour he can admire in his coffin capsule
