Important reminder re Santa

AIBU to remind you to go put the stocking presents in your kids’ rooms? I can feel the post-Christmas-Eve-party-hosting-wine-induced lethargy setting in. Those stockings seem so far from my sofa right now. There’s been so much trauma over the years from that unreliable Tooth Fairy character. Surely Santa won’t let us down…

Wish I’d started this tradition. Have set up downstairs but my 9 year old seems to be trying to catch us out so am currently sat on the stairs trying to work out if it’s safe to attempt stockings. She’d come downstairs at about half 9 but we’d not put anything out as knew she was still awake.

LuckyShark · 24/12/2025 23:05

I just had to get out of bed as I'd forgotten to fill the stocking. Thank you!

Santa has been

My 12 year old is obviously a non believer but more afraid of no presents from mum and dad than santa so has put himself to bed at 7.30 for the past 2 years - he's normally a nightmare so I'll take his 1 early night a year

TheWonderhorse · 24/12/2025 23:05

I'm currently in my DDs bed, as part of the mass Christmas sleepover, and waiting for my eldest (who is fifteen!) to fall asleep so I can text DP to come and do the stockings. I'm here as a mole 🤣

socks1107 · 24/12/2025 23:08

DDs are 22 and 19. Santa has put their stockings in their rooms

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 24/12/2025 23:08

Here the stockings start out in the living room then are hung on their bedroom door knobs (outside the room!) once filled. I'm currently waiting for the noises coming from the 18 year old's room to subside so I can take them up and go to bed!

Didimum · 24/12/2025 23:10

My daughter’s put out her socks for her two baby dolls stockings tonight and told me she expects them to be filled in the morning 🙄

DanceMumTaxi · 24/12/2025 23:12

Stockings downstairs here.

We have this too. I’m breaking up a packet of chocolate coins and the cuddly toys are getting a chocolate each.

PurpleLovecats · 24/12/2025 23:12

Always had identical stockings pre-filled and swapped them.
I’ve just told my 4 dc that the stockings will be downstairs when they get up and they were horrified, asked why when I’ve never done that before!

They are all in their twenties 😂😂

We have a gro clock, they know if the owl is still asleep to stay in bed and either rest/try to sleep and that when the owl wakes up (7.20) they can come wake us. That with added naps during the day (for us not for them, we take it in turns to stay up and play with them while the other has another hour or so sleep) makes it much more doable lol.

Gro clocks weren't a thing when mine were that young! Now they're teens and adults I still need that sleep because they keep me up late chatting

ProfMummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 24/12/2025 23:14

Stocking is currently hanging on the outside bedroom doorknob. Once we've finished watching Die Hard we'll be certain DD is flat out asleep, so can fill and hang back with minimum fuss before bed.

😂 This is year 2 of the stockings being downstairs for this very reason, and I’m never looking back!

Definitely this, so much easier!

Betty197 · 24/12/2025 23:15

Stocking on the landing here. Also have two identical stockings - DD only thinks there’s one. Secret one is full so can just do a quick swap as hubby comes to bed early hours (he then hides empty stocking)

Randomlygeneratedname · 24/12/2025 23:15

We do pillow cases, just random ones each year. We pick which one they will use as part of the elf of a shelf thing early in December (a sort of saw-esque game, which one will you choose? 🤣 -its only sinister in my head). Then I fill the chosen one's match and shove them in the garage under some tarpaulin. The empty ones go on the end of the beds, dc go to sleep and the swap happens.

I like the end of the bed, if downstairs they get muddled up with tree gifts and would want to open them all then and there. I need a break from the presents for a bit, stockings pillow case gifts get open in our bed when they wake up, go downstairs, eat the chocolate in their stockings, play with the toys till breakfast is ready. After breakfast, get dressed then tree gift time. Breaks it all up for me.

Side note: when I was a kid, I tried to trick father Christmas and put a duvet cover instead of a pillow case, hoping he would give me more presents. I woke to a full pillow case and a note saying 'nice try'.

I’m waiting for my teens to go to bed so I can deliver to their bedrooms 🫠

gggrrrargh · 24/12/2025 23:17

I’m awake and mustering the courage to get in there as if I get it wrong it’s hard to back track. Still have to sneak downstairs and get rid of the mince pies and carrots scared for that too!

ive got two stockings that are not identical after the debarcle of last year and it taking to long to fill with a light sleeper, when asked tomorrow why Santa changed them,
I will be saying - no idea that’s a weird thing to do!

My DC are in the pub and their unfilled stockings on the hearth, but yes, point taken!
🎅

I feel your pain, mine are in the pub too. I’m on sofa with dog, wine and Hugh Grant 🎅🏻

Same! I'm neither waiting up for 16 yo to go to sleep, nor creeping in his room at stupid o'clock. It's magical in different ways not being woken up at 5am!
DS1 isn't home from Thailand until Boxing Day so Father Christmas has to come that night as well.

The very best parenting tip I ever heard was having duplicate stockings and having one filled and hidden somewhere to simply swap with the unfilled hung up one. It’s an absolute game changer on Christmas Eve.
Here, filled stockings wait at the end of Mum’s bed ready to open in bed with me.

I have always done this and it's amazing. Stockings have been filled since this morning.

My DC are now mid teens and still have no idea there are duplicates!

DahlsChickenz · 24/12/2025 23:31

Just snuck mine in. Stressful moment when DC rolled over but all is now well!

JurgenKloppsTeeth · 24/12/2025 23:32

This reminds me of how I found out Santa wasn’t real: I woke up to my dad drunkenly trying to hook the stocking on the door handle from the outside, and failing miserably.

Mumtofourandnomore · 24/12/2025 23:36

I am ‘Team Duplicate Stockings’ too. I simply set an alarm and swap them over at 4am, that’s when they are deepest asleep lol and I can still get back to sleep after the swap. If they do wake up, at least they’ve had a few hours sleep prior ! Mine are all teens now but I’ve done this since they were tiny !

😂 This is year 2 of the stockings being downstairs for this very reason, and I’m never looking back!

Tried to persuade my 2 to do that, but it's not as much fun as opening stocking presents upstairs on the bed and makes them the same as normal presents 😞😞😢
