We found a mouse just before Christmas

Posting for traffic.

Let’s start saying that I hate pests. 10 years ago we paid quite a bit of money for someone to close all wholes and we have been mice free since then. Yesterday one came out at midnight of DD2 room; now he is in DD1 room. She took a video, seems quite fat.

What do we do? We are not getting anyone this time of the year.

Live traps are all that worked for us- chocolate spread, it’ll close on the mouse and then uou go far far away to let it loose

MumChp · 24/12/2025 06:07

Traps no big deal.

RosesAndHellebores · 24/12/2025 06:07

I find cats work best. Ten years is a long time vis a vis holes remaining sealed.

Pinkbananaa · 24/12/2025 06:08

We had a mouse on Christmas day 2 years ago. We never had them before we think it came in from the christmas decorations. We caught 6 in total. Was awful never had them again and fingers crossed we have moved but im constantly changing bins in the kids bedrooms and never leave back doors open.

OverlyFragrant · 24/12/2025 06:08

Peanut butter on a trap.

Sleepingtimes · 24/12/2025 06:12

Thank you. I guess we will have to get some traps and borrow a cat maybe. Just wondered where he came from and if more will come in.

Do those ultrasonic repellent work?

May have to get it checked again. I did some cleaning under skirting boards in the kitchen a few months ago so perhaps moved something

IME a cat is only useful if you want the mouse to have someone to play with.

I just catch them in sandwich boxes and take them away, but these are mice that the cat’s brought in rather than mice that make their own way in. And also it does often look like the house has been ransacked afterwards!

We get mice trying to get in all the time, can hear them scratching, we just have traps dotted around the outside of the house. So far none have actually made it inside. We use the black plastic ones from Temu (which isn't going to help you at this stage as it'll be two weeks before they get here) just pop to B&Q, I've just had a quick look and they do the Temu ones. We put a couple in the loft too, just check them regularly. We bait with chocolate.

Oh no! Mine just leave the innards and sometimes a bit of tail or nose.

JMSA · 24/12/2025 06:43

I haven’t seen a single mouse since my cat died, bless him. He made the problem worse by bringing them in alive!

Tryingatleast · 24/12/2025 06:48

Not at home so can’t check- the one I have is like a brown tunnel! Another that says cats do not help😅

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 24/12/2025 07:02

We found the ultrasonic plug in things useless. As was the cat.

we baited and caught a few but ended up having to get the council pest control in eventually as we couldn’t catch the rest - the pest controller said they learn quickly to avoid traps.

hopefully it’s just one random mouse and you’ll catch it. But if there are more get the council pest controller to come - not cheap but far cheaper than a private company. We booked ours through the council’s website.

Thanks. What did the council do? Did they inspect the whole house and sealed wholes.

No cats then. I just ordered the ultrasonic thing in Amazon. Maybe I will cancel it.

If you live in a semi rural area then your wee mouse could be coming in from the fields under the door. We've had a couple over the years who come in when it's really cold and when they don't find a ready food supply, soon go out again. Check the cupboards where you have wires and plugs for appliances and use duct or electrical tape to close off tiny holes. Same with if you have radiator and heating pipes coming up from the floor or through the wall.

CommentHere · 24/12/2025 07:11

Mice come in through the tiniest of holes so it can be difficult to fill every single one. Just set some traps, having a mouse is not a problem,, it happens.

We use live ones but if that doesn't work we get the spring loaded murdering variety. The usual spots to catch are under the kitchen sink or in the hot press/airing cupboard.

pancakestastelikecrepe · 24/12/2025 07:19

I use these - quick and clean

Thank you. We live in London, urban area, modern house, underfloor heating.

I am concerned they will get into the kitchen cupboards.

Our fuckers bring them in alive then just let them go. I like to think of them as the cats pets. I spend a lot of time screaming and hiding on furniture whilst DH runs around trying to catch them. Did you know mice turn to cannibalism when they don't have access to food? I do..... Bet you can guess why 🤣

Don’t get a cat: mine have brought in all manner of creatures. Found a very ruffled pigeon hiding behind the fridge one morning. Judging by the scattering of feathers they’d had quite the tussle.

(Pigeon was fine in the end).
