We found a mouse just before Christmas

Posting for traffic.

Let’s start saying that I hate pests. 10 years ago we paid quite a bit of money for someone to close all wholes and we have been mice free since then. Yesterday one came out at midnight of DD2 room; now he is in DD1 room. She took a video, seems quite fat.

What do we do? We are not getting anyone this time of the year.

Thank you all. I called a company and someone is coming today. I hope they can get rid of it.

It is. It seems the last person did a good job. I can’t live with pest.

Well you're never more than three feet from a rat so they say

For God’s sake. It’s Christmas. The weather is cold. Put a few crumbs of Christmas cake and some cheese out for it and leave it be.

@Sleepingtimes yeah the council looked all around the outside of the house checking for entry points. They didn’t do any sealing themselves but we have a really old house so would want to do that properly ourselves anyway.

he searched all rooms looking for mouse evidence and then looked in the loft before baiting. The initial payment was for 3 visits but I asked for an extra visit and wasn’t charged.

we’ve left a tray of the bait he set down under the kitchen cupboards just in case they came back and had a wildlife camera under there too so we could check but never had any issues since. They’d been in the kitchen, hall, bathroom and two of the bedrooms. Luckily we were renovating so the kids weren’t in those rooms - the mice had crapped on the beds 😣. The cat had also started sleeping on there and taken no notice of the mice.

EGOFLYYA x2 Humane Mouse Traps, £14 on Amazon.

Bloody brilliant, and the only traps I’ve ever had that really work (after decades living in rural woodland next to a farm, believe me I’ve tried them all). Bait with sunflower seeds & chocolate spread or peanut butter - no need for any horrible poisons - and place in dark corners along the edges of skirting boards. Live catch and easy release, works every time.

And no, the plug-in sound emitting things are bugger all use, OP.

Best of luck op!!

Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house not a creature was stirring not even a mouse
Did it not get the memo?

Mice are so illiterate these days

mondaytosunday · 24/12/2025 09:42

Don’t use those ultra sonics if there are families nearby. Teenagers in particular can hear them. My neighbours but one had one and it drove my son mad. They use similar in areas where teenagers hang out as a deterrent.
I have cats and if anything they make it worse as they tend to bring live ones in then get bored with playing with it and they scuttle behind the fridge…

I find cats work best. Ten years is a long time vis a vis holes remaining sealed.

IME, it’s cats that bring them in
👀 looking at you DCatParsons 😼

I saw this topic discussed earlier this year on a tv programme. I can’t think now who the person was but they were very much an animal lover and sympathetic to the mice. He said he’d sadly come to the conclusion that so called humane traps were utterly cruel and caused great distress to the rodent.

They could be trapped for many hours waiting to be found in utter terror. If they survive the ordeal and are released nearby they just find their way back in. He said if they are taken further away and released in an unfamiliar area they are likely to die. He advocated the use of snap traps as the kindest way to see them off.

Yes I’ve caught four in the last 48 hours in snap traps. Our house is a building site at the moment, so no point getting anyone out as there is not much we can do about some of the entry points right now. They had been enjoying a full bag of brown sugar, so now that’s gone and the kitchen is disinfected it’s gone a bit quieter. It’s the last thing we needed before Christmas 😫

Isobel201 · 24/12/2025 10:36

Cats just bring them in, and in my case, they just die and she doesn't do anything with them, I do the disposal.

Update

Pest control came, very quick service. They said they are coming from under the kitchen, so removed skirting boards and sealed the holes with foam; apparently it has just started so hopefully is an isolated mouse; couldn’t see many droppings, He said they go upstairs for warm and food; probably smell sweets in the girls rooms.

He put traps under the kitchen only as he said if you put everywhere they just go looking for it; he said to give him two days and he will be dead. He will be back in 3 weeks to check. I removed all the traps 3 months ago when I cleaned under kitchen cupboards as it was a long time since they have put them,

So basically we have to live with him for a few more days. Not sure I will sleep much

Scrooge! Give cheeses to the meeces on Christmas! 🤣

deltapanda · 24/12/2025 22:59

Well who knew mice had such a sweet tooth Sleepingtimes. I just got out all my bits to do the stockings, I’d been keeping them in a box on a bottom shelf, and have found out, at 10.30pm on Christmas Eve, that they’ve been in and have eaten all the chocolate coins, foil and all.

Doesn't matter what the hell else I’ve bought DCs, this will go down in history as the year Santa forgot the chocolate coins. I’m absolutely gutted, repulsed, and now on the wine.

EmbroideredGardener · 24/12/2025 23:11

We were told by pest control that most cats either bring them in, or their food attracts them in so are best avoided as a pest repellent generally. Live traps with peanut butter and move them out to the countryside where there aree piles of leaves and debris for them to hide in
