Stupid things customers ask on Xmas Eve Eve

I have done enough years in supermarkets at Christmas.

I remember one question raised by a few customers when putting out bread.
”do you have any bread dated after 28th”
I said if you go to a supermarket on any other 23rd, the latest date on loaves is 28th. As the bakeries always put the date as X days ahead, regardless of the time of year. I remember seeing one of these customers on Jan 23rd and asked them could they find a date longer than 28th. They couldn’t. Retail worker 1 customer 0.

”Is it possible to collect my turkey on Xmas Day?” Erm no.

OP posts:

Asking about the BBD date on bread isn’t ‘stupid’ 🙄

Nothing Aunt Bessie’s should grace a Xmas dinner

I disagree when there are 16 for dinner.

Exactly

The OP sounds a bit… well, shouldn’t be in retail

Do you staff think they’re superior because they know where the eggs are?

Not at all (to be fair I do work in fashion retail not a supermarket).

However we have all had many ridiculous customers at this time of year and I keep a box of chocolates in the stock room when my team need a moment!!

"Can have a prescription, I've run out of my happy pills " - at 5.29 on Christmas eve!

This X 1000 in veterinary medicine, usually their pet's Epilepsy or Diabetes medicine...or on the other end of the scale urgent flea and worm treatment or an urgent nail clip.

I used to work in Tesco and people would steal things out of otherbpeoples trolley

what is the stores issue on this because until its paid it belongs to the store ?

I would agree with this.

I know my way around a supermarket layout - by brand, not store as we don't always shop at the same branch (to the point DH annoyingly asks me, on which aisle will I find x in every supermarket because I will know).

Eggs are the one that individual stores tend to move around.

Aldi - last aisle usually but it's the baking section.
Lidl - baking section but it's usually the second aisle. (I always want to look on the last aisle).
Asda - usually on the back wall by the bakery (this is the one that foils me.)
Sainsbury's / Tesco - near the dairy section. Often where the long life milk is but sometimes in the chilled section.

Eggs need a universal home.

That said, I got very angry at the kidney beans in Tesco the other week. They have a whole aisle named 'tinned beans'. They were not in the tinned bean aisle or the tinned food aisle. Nope. World foods aisle? Nope. They were in the sauces aisle close to the ketchup. This is wrong. This angers me. This should not be allowed. There should be laws for misrepresentation of aisles.

I needed yellow split peas in Tesco this week. I’m delighted to say I just happened to spy them after 2 aisles of looking. I had serious issues last time I looked.

I always get a few bottles of Babycham at Christmas time as they are a fond memory of my childhood.
I know now to only ask staff members who look older than about 30 😀

This is the same when I ask for suet

Jonnyenglish · 23/12/2025 16:25

does anyone that works in the big supermarkets know why now they hardly reduce the reduced to the cheapest prices ? a year or so ago it used to be anything left after 6/7pm was eg 75% off or very cheap. now it seems even after 8pm its only 1/2 price at best

yes i asked the staff but no one seemed to know why it has altered

Amberlynnswashcloth · 23/12/2025 16:25

Seasonal job at an electronic chain store many years ago I actually had a customer invade the till area to argue with me that I was misreading the computer system. He helped himself to the screen and wouldn't believe me that when it showed stock as "1" this meant the display item and not even on display at this store - elsewhere in the country. Some people lose the plot altogether at this time of year.

but if it still gets a certain amount wasted because its still eg 1/2 price rather than eg 75%off by eg 8 then it seems a waste

Have you read the thread? Do you really need it spelling out to you?

I do. Go on then, tell us exactly what you meant.

Because they have less to shift. Their buying is better.

true but if they are still going to have to waste some of the items because they have not sold due to the 1/2 price still but they could have sold at 75 % off etc then where is the logic in that ?

because when it is or gets a yellow label / reduced sticker it has to be sold that day, usually mid day the prices used to be 1/2 half of the original price then around 6pm or 7pm it was either 75% off or 90 % off etc and by then most items would have been sold.

yet not come 7/8pm with the prices only being 1/2 half off etc it gets wasted according to staff but the staff dont know why they dont do the 75% etc
