Can you settle a debate, do you consider Celebrations and Heroes classic Christmas chocs?

I don’t , only Roses and Quality Street are imo

We tried the M&S Big mix one this year - MISTAKE - just a load of sweet, tasteless gooo. Never again. (But it has given us a nice tin I supose)

HoorayHettie · 22/12/2025 17:07

In our family we have

Bendicks Mint Collection (obligatory at the end of Christmas Dinner)

Roses

Quality Street

Terry's Chocolate Orange

Lindt pick & mix (my favourites)

My DM used to love fruit jellies that had a liquid centre (can't remember what they were called) & DF loved liquorice allsorts and was delighted to be given a Bertie Bassett jar one year!

TheIceBear · 22/12/2025 17:07

They aren’t even chocolate anymore they don’t contain enough cacao to be classed as such but yes I associate them with Christmas

Numberblocky · 22/12/2025 17:08

I always had Rose's and Terry's Chocolate Orange growing up. But (sounding about a million years old here), they just don't taste the same as they used to, so I don't even want those anymore!

Cinnamontruffles · 22/12/2025 17:12

I remember one year (80s or early 90s?) getting an amazing box of Cadbury chocolate I think they were called inspirations. I kept the box for years but I think they were discontinued quite quickly

smallglassbottle · 22/12/2025 16:47

They're all disgusting palm oil laden slop.

This

Sahara123 · 22/12/2025 17:13

To be honest I’ve never really understood the buying of lots of chocolate at Christmas, we never did when I was a child, and I don’t really now. We’d rather leave room for all the other Christmas yummy things I make! The only exception really is I used to buy myself a box of after eights to keep in the fridge just for me! This thread has reminded me I’ve not even done that this year !

NotDarkGothicMama · 22/12/2025 17:13

No, they're newfangled chocolates. Roses and Quality Street are the classics, maybe After Eights if you're feeling posh. Terry's chocolate orange goes in the stockings. Milk Tray is for Mother's Day.

Disclaimer: we have none of the above, being solidly snobby and going for Hotel Chocolat.

Minjou · 22/12/2025 17:14

At least heroes and celebrations are edible. Roses and quality street are fucking disgusting these days.

Graciously · 22/12/2025 17:17

all nouveau rubbish. I’d like a good box of Carousel or a box of Weekend

BernadetteJune · 22/12/2025 17:17

Bring back Cadbury's Milk Tray - I mean proper Milk Tray (with the lime barrel) like we had in the 70's.

greenwithglee · 22/12/2025 17:18

Id say roses and quality streets are the classics, but poor imitations of what they once were, so just crack on and buy whatever now. If they were the quality street of old then I'd say they were a christmas must.

Dominoeffecter · 22/12/2025 16:45

No, only Roses and Quality street

Only correct answer (excluding chocolate orange as it’s in a different category)

MrsDoomesPattersen · 22/12/2025 17:20

Absolutely not

roses after eights matchmakers and quality street only

MrsDoomesPattersen · 22/12/2025 17:20

Oh and terrys chocolate orange

OttersMayHaveShifted · 22/12/2025 17:22

smallglassbottle · 22/12/2025 16:47

They're all disgusting palm oil laden slop.

Agreed.

yeah as one of your five a day it doesnt count here

ReignOfError · 22/12/2025 17:27

Roses and Quality Street are the chocolates of my childhood. They were horrid then, and I assume they still are.

Christmas chocolates for me (and it’s the only time I eat them) are Elizabeth Shaw mint crisps.

Edited because my predictive text is insane.

HelenaWilson · 22/12/2025 17:29

My DM used to love fruit jellies that had a liquid centre (can't remember what they were called)

Newberry Fruits I think.

Quality Street always in my family. They'd come out in time for the Queen (and I bet she only had QS or Roses at Christmas.)

But absolutely agree they ruined QS when they took away the foil wrappers. The purple one and the green triangle and all the rest were part of the experience.

BauhausOfEliott · 22/12/2025 17:37

No, I'm old school and Christmas is Quality Street and Roses. Celebrations and Heroes are still, in my eyes, a newfangled invention whereas Quality Street and Roses are institutions from my childhood.

We always used to have a massive tin of Quality Street at Christmas, usually bought by my grandparents, for people to graze from. But my siblings and I would also get our own 'special' box of chocolates each as presents, and when I was very little I thought my box of Black Magic was the most grown-up and glamorous thing in the entire world.

Happyjoe · 22/12/2025 17:38

I bought a tin of not-so-quality street this year and cheekily opened them. Vile. Absolutely nothing like when I was a child, we only had roses or QS to chose from.

YourMotherSortsSocksInHell · 22/12/2025 17:39

Celebrations and Heroes are Johnny Come Lately-ies.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 22/12/2025 17:42

Yes. A big tub of all 4, and every flavour of Matchmaker, After Eights and Terry’s Chocolate Orange in every stocking. Last year I only gave in to the call of the Matchmakers.

StrawberrySquash · 22/12/2025 17:42

Quality Street is the OG. Not what it was, but I always crack and buy a tub. And the coffee creams they do in John Lewis are good. I remember the year Celebrations came out and everyone bought them because they were new and exciting. Roses are genuinely bad now. Absolutely would not buy. Too sweet!

RedRiverShore6 · 22/12/2025 17:43

I'm old so think just Quality Street and Roses, we used to have them and Weekend and those New berry fruit sweets and the sugary orange and lemon fruit slices.

The others are too new
