To think coverless duvets are pointless?

I hate changing duvet covers so I thought I’d treat myself to a machine washable coverless duvet. I went for one made by silentnight. It’s king size.

It needed to be washed today, so I tried to put it in the machine. I couldn’t even get half of it in, so ended up having to drive 7 miles to the nearest launderette, paying nearly £20 to wash and dry it, the whole exercise taking over 2 hours of my day. It would have been a lot easier to just put a duvet cover on!

It’s a 10.5 tog one, so silly me just assumed that it would fit in the machine as my regular duvet is also 10.5 tog and fits in easily. So it can be done, but for whatever reason they decided to make these ‘washable’ ones far too big to fit into anything except a giant washing machine, that no regular household possesses.

I’m sending it back as it’s not fit for purpose.

AIBU to think this is a major design flaw?

I have no issues with mine

purpleme12 · 22/12/2025 16:43

This is why I don't buy them

Clefable · 22/12/2025 16:43

I like our super king one but it fits in our washing machine fine (we do have an 11kg one). I really like them for the kids, a lot easier than a traditional duvet to wash when there’s a pee leak or sickness bug or something!

cardibach · 22/12/2025 16:44

This is my thought and why I don’t have one. However. A friend who has reduced capability in one arm post stroke finds them good. She has a laundry collect them.

Peridoteage · 22/12/2025 16:44

Yup i do not see the point of them. It takes 30 seconds to change a duvet cover and they are far more efficient to wash & dry than a whole duvet.

Some people struggle to change their divers because of disabilities or health issues.

I love mine and it fits in my rather small washing machine just fine, but like everything, they’re not for everyone.

Oh, and mine dries in a few hours even just hung over the bannister so that’s no issue at all.

Which brand actually fits into a machine? The one here is 9kg, no chance, the regular ones at the launderette were a fair bit bigger but again, no…so had no choice but to spend £12 on using the giant one. I had to wait for it to finish the wash it was doing first…another coverless duvet!

Even if you did fit in your machine, surely you have the pressure of washing and drying the whole thing in the same day?

LoisGriffinskitchen · 22/12/2025 16:46

I have dyspraxia and changing duvet covers is a nightmare I no longer have to worry about. I was mine in an 8kg machine with no problems.

CraftyNavySeal · 22/12/2025 16:46

YANBU I don’t see how it’s easier to wash a whole duvet.

Maybe if you have mobility issues and you struggle with covers, but then I would still put a flat sheet under it and wash that instead

We have Night Owl ones I think. They fit fine in our washing machine and tumble dryer.

Mine dries in about 3 hours on the line on a sunny day and doesn’t take much longer hung over the bannister on a wet day. Less than that if they’re in the dryer. I don’t know how but they dry very quickly indeed.

All this talk of changing duvet covers has made me think of Len Goodman’s comments in Strictly about poor cape work in Paso Doble’s.

VickyEadieofThigh · 22/12/2025 16:53

I'm intrigued - how frequently are owners washing these?

I just wash them the same as I would wash normal bedding, every week/two weeks depending. Just take them off in morning and wash and dry and back on bed that evening.

Well in my case, 3 nights before the dog was sick on it.

I love mine! DD still has night time accidents so we have two for her as they're so quick to wash and dry.

I wash mine fortnightly 😊

You’re not going to be able to take it back. It is fit for purpose, not their fault you f your washing machine is too small.

Hi Op mine all go in my washing machine 9kg includine the 10.5 tog kingsize winter one. All bought from M and s.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 22/12/2025 17:08

I’m not sure I see the point. Surely a duvet cover is more economical?? You can put other things in wash with it.

77Fee · 22/12/2025 17:08

How about getting 2 singles instead?

loobylou10 · 22/12/2025 17:13

love all mine. From fine bedding company, all fit in my 9kg easily.
