To think coverless duvets are pointless?

I hate changing duvet covers so I thought I’d treat myself to a machine washable coverless duvet. I went for one made by silentnight. It’s king size.

It needed to be washed today, so I tried to put it in the machine. I couldn’t even get half of it in, so ended up having to drive 7 miles to the nearest launderette, paying nearly £20 to wash and dry it, the whole exercise taking over 2 hours of my day. It would have been a lot easier to just put a duvet cover on!

It’s a 10.5 tog one, so silly me just assumed that it would fit in the machine as my regular duvet is also 10.5 tog and fits in easily. So it can be done, but for whatever reason they decided to make these ‘washable’ ones far too big to fit into anything except a giant washing machine, that no regular household possesses.

I’m sending it back as it’s not fit for purpose.

AIBU to think this is a major design flaw?

How does a coverless duvet get water and detergent freely to it? I've tried to wash my doble but it was crammed in but it didn't clean properly, wet but not necessarily soapy water to all of it. It didn't move freely and it was a complete waste of time.

I've got a small washing machine and no tumble drier and these things together have put me off trying coverless duvets.

It's also a pain with washable rugs (which I need in this house) because only the very smallest rugs will fit in. When the machine gives up I might buy a bigger one.

I just throw mine over the door or bannister and it's dry within 4 hours 😊

My 10.5 fits in my 11kg washing machine and tumble drier just fine.

They are an an absolute godsend to anyone with shoulder problems. And they can also be really great for restless sleepers whose quilts bunch inside the covers.

I'm both. They are fantastic. Nightlark have some lovely designs, we've currently got "childrens" ones covered with planets and stars. They'd be wasted on a child 🤣

Even if you did fit in your machine, surely you have the pressure of washing and drying the whole thing in the same day?

I have two for each bed. Problem solved. It's also nice to see a change of pattern.

People say that, but if I try it with clothes they end up smelling musty, I hate the smell of indoor dried stuff, plus live in a tiny cottage where there's not much room for hanging stuff up, so I think it's too much of a risk really. Anyway, the machine is just too small. I'll carry on with washing the covers for a bit longer. But thank you for the advice.

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 22/12/2025 17:36

I bought one for after my hysterectomy it was practical at the time. Now lives in spare room mainly because it's too low a tog for me in winter. I'm always cold.

TeaRoseTallulah · 22/12/2025 17:40

You could use a flat sheet under it instead?

My machine is 9kg and easily fits a superking duvet in it. I don't think you can send it back ,there's nothing wrong with it.

helpfulperson · 22/12/2025 17:42

I much prefer the feel of sleeping under a coverless duvet. You don't get the sensation of the movement of the cover against the duvet.

CalzoneOnLegs · 22/12/2025 17:43

@Moortown YANBU another attempt at reinventing the wheel

Pippa12 · 22/12/2025 17:44

Are they warm? I’m thinking I might get one for my 10 year old, but my house is quite cold so we all have thick duvets. Smelly boys tho and all that

Flowerslamp · 22/12/2025 17:46

Mine fits in the machine fine. I don't like it though, it's all nylony.

Katrinawaves · 22/12/2025 17:46

I don’t have one but something popped up on my Facebook feed a few days ago. Apparently the “hack” is to stuff your duvet into a black bin bag, put the bin bag into the machine and then pull the bag out. This is apparently much much easier than just trying to stuff the naked duvet in. Worth a try @Moortown?

ThatsRoughBuddy · 22/12/2025 17:49

I hated mine at first - the feel of it wasn’t what I was expecting. I’m used to it now and love it, it’s 10.5tog and toasty as fuck. Mine fits in the washing machine no problem and it’s not a huge machine. Its a NightLark one called Midnight Bloom and is so pretty.

Happyjoe · 22/12/2025 17:49

Good if struggle, but nah. I like my different duvet covers, get bored with the same old. Plus, if not dryer take ages to dry in the winter.

Cliffy95 · 22/12/2025 17:51

I dont need to change my duvet cover very often. I have a fitted sheet on the bed and a flat sheet over our bodies with duvet on top. Also keeps the cover from fading in the wash.

The8thOfThe7Dwarfs · 22/12/2025 17:53

I love ours. I brought one which does fit in my machine, it's a super king size too. Somuch easier than battling the duvet cover on. Mine dries hung up in about half a day. Personally I could never go back.

And I love the kids having them for sickness bugs etc

FoldAway · 22/12/2025 17:54

I bought one for a relative recently (at their request) because they struggle with cover changing, but I think they will use a flat sheet under the duvet. I wouldn’t buy one for myself as the range of patterns and fabrics available aren’t to my taste.

TonTonMacoute · 22/12/2025 17:57

Peridoteage · 22/12/2025 16:44

Yup i do not see the point of them. It takes 30 seconds to change a duvet cover and they are far more efficient to wash & dry than a whole duvet.

Exactly this.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 22/12/2025 17:59

I have three (one on, one off, and one in the wash!), and just pop them in the washing machine. However, I did buy the biggest one that I could get my hands on at the time (14kg). It's perfect for the job, and also fits in dog beds and a week's worth of work clothes (unless it's been very cold, and I need extra layers).

If you think really really hard you might be able to imagine someone who cannot change a king size duvet cover in 30 seconds.

mondaytosunday · 22/12/2025 18:04

My king size duvet fits in my machine. Agree it is a bit pointless if it doesn’t!

PuppyMonkey · 22/12/2025 18:06

I had to give mine up as it gave me massive hot flushes. DP uses it in the campervan though.

I don’t get any such sensation - I can’t even imagine what it would be like.

ByRedBee · 22/12/2025 18:08

Have a range of different night owl ones from fine bedding company all fit in machine fine
