People going OTT with presents buying

Hdlll · 21/12/2025 19:33

I thought people were cutting back on present giving. My friend texted me asking what should she buy for her sister’s fiancé’s gran for her Christmas present.

I replied - you are not related to her! She thought about it and replied- yeah, so true

People still going OTT on buying presents. People should not get skint on buying presents for people that are not going to
use.

My family were one of the first families not to buy presents for Christmas. We do birthdays instead.

Many Xmas gifts to me smack “gave no effort” Tubs of Quality Street etc, Lynx gift sets for men etc

Was there a public announcement that people were cutting back on presents? Did I miss it? Why are you so concerned?

TittyGajillions · 21/12/2025 19:36

Standing ovation 🙄

The first in the world? Or just the UK?? 😂

CastleCrasher · 21/12/2025 19:37

"My family were one of the first families not to buy presents for Christmas" what an odd claim to make!!

If you don't want to buy, don't. If others want to buy, then let them get on with it. It's a simple as that. There's no right or wrong. (And my dh would be delighted with a tub of sweets and a lynx set!)

dottiedodah · 21/12/2025 19:38

Yanbu! We haven't bought presents for adults for years.never know what to buy really.Apart from our parents (,now passed sadly) it's so expensive and unessary .most people have what they want anyway

FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 21/12/2025 19:38

Urm, there was no communal decision to cut back on presents, and your family will be in a tiny minority of people who celebrate Christmas without presents. I think your approach is quite sad and giving presents is about spreading cheer and should be encouraged 🤷‍♀️

IPM · 21/12/2025 19:40

I thought people were cutting back on present giving.

Are you able to say which people exactly?

Your OP is a bit garbled.

Also, with different people earning different amounts of money, it doesn't always follow that they're going to make themselves skint?

Probably the whole universe.

TeenLifeMum · 21/12/2025 19:41

I’ve been told on mn that as I’ve “only” bought dd1 one present to unwrap, I should get her some pjs and other bits and pieces as it’s a bit “grinchy”. The single gift is a £1200 gaming PC (that she’ll also use for uni work when she goes next September). Some mumsnetters are nuts about Christmas imo. (That’s not our usual budget but she’s a teen who rarely asks for anything and needs a replacement for her dying laptop. And we are in a good financial position to afford it).

IPM · 21/12/2025 19:42

I'm pretty sure Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus were the first family to cut back on present giving.

The 3 wise men were furious.

Nourishinghandcream · 21/12/2025 19:44

The spirit of Christmas is alive & well.😖

People will do what they want to do.
If you don't want to buy them that is fine but who are you to say that others should not?
Agree, people should not get into debt buying presents but plenty can afford it and actually like giving presents. Yes, some may be typical "gift" presents but many people are happy to receive them.

Theslummymummy · 21/12/2025 23:29

You don't have to be related to people to buy them presents you know

mondaytosunday · 21/12/2025 23:42

I think the OP means that we are still in a COL crisis. I don’t give presents to friends - I used to give presents to my friends’ kids when they first had them but soon realised I was putting far too much effort in to this when my own children might get something like a toothbrush in return (I mean a plain bog standard toothbrush worth about .89p, not even a Disney Princess one). My DH got his family gifts, usually books, that was his choice and responsibility.
So now it’s my (grown) kids, about five presents each, my step grandkids, a token to my one remaining in law, and my sisters. If I’m visiting someone close to the day I bring something like hyacinth bulbs planted in a basket or a nice box of chocolates.

PollyBell · 21/12/2025 23:44

People which people you dont mean everyone on the planet is one collective mind and everyone thinks the same? surly people are allowed to but what they want are they not?

Wefolinnny · 21/12/2025 23:51

I've only bought gifts for the family I live with this year. No gifts for teachers, club leaders, parents or siblings. I've felt a bit sheepish not handing over a gift when the other parents do but I haven't had the time to worry about it. It's not a financial issue for us but I don't want to have to think about it, I have enough on my plate.

RitaandtheTiarasgonewiththewind · 21/12/2025 23:53

Everyone's circumstances are different,I don't spend anywhere near how I used to be able to do also were of an age we've got what we need and anything more just becomes stuff .
Each to their own cut you're cloth accordingly.

RitaandtheTiarasgonewiththewind · 21/12/2025 23:54

Your not you're

Thoseslippers · 22/12/2025 00:03

It's none of your business what other people decide to do.
You also sound up your own arse. You can't say you hate people getting into debt in one breath then in the next speak disparagingly about more affordable gifts like tubs of quality street.
I'm personally grateful when anyone bothers to get me any type of gift. As long as its not someone who's supposedly close to me buying something they should know im allergic to or similar. If a distant family member buys me a tub of chocolate id be grateful even if I didn't like it because its something someone will like.. I could take it to work or give it to the kids. Similarly with a bath set, someone will get use out of it even if I can't. So to me these are cheap gifts that useful and aren't going to put anyone in debt.
And as a mum I put a lot of effort into getting my family gifts. If no family members bothered to get me token gifts id have next to nothing to open myself on Christmas day. Which would be quite sad. It's nice to open a scented candle or some socks. Just small things I could use. But it makes you feel thought of doesn't it.

Piknik · 22/12/2025 00:06

Your Public Service Announcement makes no sense on many levels

The 'First Family' bit, obviously
'birthdays instead' - Nope. It's not 'one or the other'
All the smacking of 'gave no effort' is subjective
Tins of Quality Street are always welcome

But aren't you clever for reminding your friend that she's not related to her boyfriend's grandmother! She'd probably have lost her mind and bought her a small token gift without your swift interception.

Bore off.

Her sister's fiancé's grandmother?? FFS.

Mind you this is also a bit weird.

Nutmuncher · 22/12/2025 00:12

It’s the thought that counts, that Lynx gift set is a successful present year after year because people want to spread cheer and joy and could be all some budgets will allow.

How much thought goes into the purchase of a Lynx gift set, exactly? 🤔
