Copying hairstyles, design ideas etc.
Influencers are not celebrities

Be unique. Then you will be yourself more

OP posts:

Nobody is truly unique, there are over 8 billion of us on this planet, and people have got inspiration and ideas from each other since the dawn of time.

What do you do that's so unique op?

Localfriend · 20/12/2025 14:16

did you crib that off a Sainsbury’s jumper?

SeaAndStars · 20/12/2025 14:50

Did you copy your user name from the phone accessories shop or the hairdressing company OP?

DustyMaiden · 20/12/2025 14:51

I am unique, just like everyone else.

BauhausOfEliott · 20/12/2025 14:58

Are you 12?

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 20/12/2025 14:59

So you don’t do fashion then?

OK. This usually comes up when people claim to be above fashion and trends. I guess influencers are more likely to be driving fashion than anything else these days so I can see why the “I hate fashion and so should you all too” types would target them now.

Mauro711 · 20/12/2025 15:00

I don't know what kind of hairstyle I could have if it can't be one that anybody else has. We all copy styles that we appreciate, we might just not realise it.

xmasstress12 · 20/12/2025 15:01

I don’t think it’s sad as such. Lots of people aren’t confident in their choices or don’t like to stand out so it’s easier to “copy”. I worked in fashion for years and whatever outfit you put on the mannequin people would buy.

MyCatStoleSausages · 20/12/2025 15:05

I don't see anything wrong with taking outfit inspiration or interior design ideas from celebs/influencers. If you like what they are wearing/how their house is decorated then why not? There are influencers with every sense of style out there, alternative, hippy, brightly coloured, beige, etc etc. Finding someone on instagram and getting ideas from them is no different from picking up a magazine 20years ago and getting ideas from Sienna Miller or Alexa Chung.

HauntedBungalow · 20/12/2025 15:09

Magazines didn't steal your data and spy on you though.

Anyway, maybe OP is unique. Maybe she's got a beard. Or three legs. Or gills instead of lungs.

xmasstress12 · 20/12/2025 15:10

The weird thing I find about copying celebs or influencers is how some people copy everything, they like something just because the person they admire likes it & will want it regardless if it suits them. That’s the odd bit.

persisted · 20/12/2025 15:15

I don’t see how it matters. You still look like you. Sadly I finger getting the same dress as the gorgeous model doesn’t make me look like them.
Theres a woman I work with who has a great pair of boots. Even if I get the same ones (which I wouldn’t) we would still look different. I’ve got 20 years and a good 2 stone more than her 😆

RedTagAlan · 20/12/2025 15:21

"Look, you've got it all wrong! You don't need to follow me. You don't need to follow anybody! You've got to think for yourselves! You're all individuals!"

[in unison] "Yes! We're all individuals!"

"You're all different!"

[in unison] "Yes, we are all different!"

"I'm not..."

"Shhh!"

:-)

Heyhelga · 20/12/2025 15:35

I have to agree. I find the celebrity worshipping culture cringey.

MissMoneyFairy · 20/12/2025 15:46

Did you ever follow pop stars, actors, models, adverts, tv personalities, their clothes, hairstyles, shoes, make up.

Raspberrymoon49 · 20/12/2025 15:50

Agree, they’re sheeple, same as those who use celeb names, Demi didn’t exist before Demi Moore

I agree with this. It's one thing to see an idea or style on SM and like it and copy it, but to follow X person and just always copy their latest thing regardless because it's from them is sad yes.

WithIcePlease · 20/12/2025 16:03

I'm almost 60 and get lots of make up tips from SM. They are very helpful imo as I have little clue with to do with bronzers, highlighters etc.

I haven't bought specific products due to influencers but at least now I can do a quick daily routine where I look healthy.

It's just information

TreesinthePark · 20/12/2025 16:10

I think I disagree and mainly because I don't believe anyone is just blindly following influencers. Well, maybe a handful of people but in that case they probably have more seeious issues to deal with anyway.

I'm 40s now, I remember at 16 a friend bringing into college a Boots No.7 makeup set she'd bought on offer for an absolute bargain. By the end of the week all our group had bought it!

AddictedToBooks · 20/12/2025 17:01

I live next door to an influencer - she's very beautiful, young and has a body to die for and if you believed her social media, you'd think she has an amazing apartment, drives a flash car, lives the high-life of luxury holidays, restaurants etc etc.

She lives in a bog-standard semi, drives a filthy and very old car, she refuses to engage with anyone outside of her very small social circle, she's in her house totally alone 99% of the time and she microwaves every meal (we have paper walls and can hear everything in each others houses).

I actually feel really sad for her because she could be living such a wonderful REAL life if she let herself.
She openly looks down her nose at me (don't blame her - I'm old enough to be her mum, I'm overweight and disabled and stopped bothering with daily makeup and she is very much image-conscious as are many her age) and everyone else but she doesn't realise that 25 years ago, I too had the amazing figure and "beautiful" (ie makeup!) looks - I never thought I'd become fat or disabled, but at least I grew up in a world without influencers shoving a fake life into my face and thinking it was real, so I'm perfectly fine with being fat and "old", perfectly fine going on caravan holidays where I have a genuinely relaxing and lovely time etc etc.

AliasGrape · 20/12/2025 17:11

I saw an ‘influencer’ talking about having an Indian take away tonight and copied her and have one on the way for us right now.

I’m really happy.

Forever1973 · 20/12/2025 17:15

I don't follow any influencers or celebrities online. But I don't think there's anything wrong with taking inspiration from them. It doesn't mean you have to copy every detail of their appearance slavishly. If I happen to see someone, celebrity on TV or person in the street, and I admire the way they look, I will often look out to see if I can find a similar outfit.

AmyDuPlantier · 20/12/2025 17:20

Gosh, in your head do you really care about this??

EatYourDamnPie · 20/12/2025 17:26

If they like the stuff , why shouldn’t they? Everyone gets their inspiration somewhere (hence the uniqueness being a myth) .

You imply that influencers are somehow less worthy to follow than celebrities- why is that? What value do you think celebrities hold that influencers don’t?

I’m not big on fashion and I don’t follow influencers (or celebrities) but I’m not particularly unique and every time I thought I was I’ve later realized I was just following less well known sub-cultural norms. Almost no one is really unique (except in that somewhat miraculous, somewhat banal “we’re all unique“ way).

Successfully living as a social being is a never ending balancing act of doing what you want and conforming to others. There are many ways to do it, not just one.
