I'll confess I don't really understand the draw of influencers. Surely we must all have encountered them in the wild by now. Seeing that, especially when they're en masse, I would have thought would be enough to prompt most people to switch off their instagram and tiktok.

Think I'm a bit guilty of this. Have a favourite tiktoker who talks about fountain pens and stationery. I may have bought a sweater she was wearing...

Is this different from seeing a sweater on a colleague at work and buying it because you like it (and hopefully not wearing it to work!)?

To me it’s different. On a colleague or a friend I’ve seen it in real life & they are actually wearing it as opposed to someone putting something on for a selling opportunity

So any different to seeing a sweater during an ad break on the TV and buying it?

xmasstress12 · 20/12/2025 18:26

Completely depends on the retailer, I don’t buy things just based on how they look in an advert.

OttersMayHaveShifted · 20/12/2025 18:27

There's not really anything unique in hairstyles or fashion though. It's all been done before and comes round again. Anyway, why on earth is it important to look unique? It's a ridiculous and pointless aim imo. We all are unique. What makes us unique is not our clothes though. Wearing an outfit similar to someone else's a) is pretty much inevitable and b) does not make me any less myself.

Fargo79 · 20/12/2025 18:42

Can you post a pic of your current outfit and hairstyle so we can see what it looks like when someone is unique and not influenced by trends at all?

Salvadoridory · 20/12/2025 19:07

I hope the OP is unique and if not, that the factory broke the mould afterwards. Fashion, imitation and admiration is as old as the hills and happens in every culture and has been the case since the start of time. Its just jealousy and snobbery rolled into one. These days I imitate many people I admire, although some are horses and parrots because I like their style. And recently a toddler who had an almighty tantrum in Costa. I watched in admiration at their refusal to be told to sit in a certain seat for no apparent reason and copied their attitude, if not their physical approach in a difficult work meeting the next day. It was highly successful. When I was 12 I copied Toni Basil and the Kids from Fame. So what? I still have my own self and values, I just like being like creatures i admire.

This is exuding so much NPC energy. The type of person who stands on the sidelines watching others whilst secretly thinking they're better but in reality, they're just not interesting for anyone at all. Exactly like the background characters (non playable characters) in video games.

Influencers are celebrities though. You might not like their job especially but they created content that thousands, or even millions, enjoy. Their job is to make visually appealing images and videos, often to inspire people's interest in the styles and products they include.
That aside, people have been inspired by fashions from people in the public eye for centuries. White wedding dresses from Queen Victoria, bobs form Louise Brooks, aristocratic lead face paint and beauty spots on the 1700s and things like diamond engagement rings from that De Beers ad campaign. More recently it's boho style from Sienna Miller or matt lipstick and filler from Kylie Jenner, but it's no different really to a Victorian getting a Christmas tree because the Queen had one.

Hahahahaaaaaaaaa

OP stop it. Didn’t people ‘back in the day’ have a hairstyle, buy a top, painted their nails a certain colour because they’ve seen it in a magazine? Or someone on the street? Fashion trends are not exclusive to celebrities and influencers - yes that is a relatively new way we consume the media, but don’t act like this is anything new.

xmasstress12 · 20/12/2025 22:52

I actually think the homogeneity is fairly new. Shops used to pretty distinctive from each other when I was younger & there were lots of micro trends worn by different groups. Now it’s all very samey. And parents and dc dressed differently from each other whereas teenagers & 50 yr olds will often have the same outfits on now.

RawBloomers · 20/12/2025 17:36

You imply that influencers are somehow less worthy to follow than celebrities- why is that? What value do you think celebrities hold that influencers don’t?

I’m not big on fashion and I don’t follow influencers (or celebrities) but I’m not particularly unique and every time I thought I was I’ve later realized I was just following less well known sub-cultural norms. Almost no one is really unique (except in that somewhat miraculous, somewhat banal “we’re all unique“ way).

Successfully living as a social being is a never ending balancing act of doing what you want and conforming to others. There are many ways to do it, not just one.

I would say that a celebrity may, though not always, have actually done something to be a celebrity, have a talent or skill that is the result of hard work or persistence. An influencer is just "being".

Their talent or skill, if they have one, would be a good reason to follow or listen to them about that matter, but has no bearing on whether, say, their holiday destinations/book choices/favourite beer/etc. are worth listening too compared anybody else’s, does it?

RhaenysRocks · 21/12/2025 00:03

I never said it did. Someone asked what the difference was between the two. I wouldn't wear or buy X because my favourite actor has it and I don't follow SM influencers. However, I would suggest that someone who is well known for actually doing something you admire is a more likely focus to copy than someone whose job is simply to get you to buy whatever.
