Broken washing machine, what to do

Replace or get a repair from manufacturer which is £149.

I find it terrible it's only a 1 year warranty on integrated washing machines.

I don't know if I should repair at £149 or get a new one? It's 5 years old now

Get a new one. After 5 years, it doesn't owe you anything.

Itsjusttoomuchtoday · 20/12/2025 12:30

At 5 years old I would get a new one.

Blueskiesnotgrey · 20/12/2025 12:34

5y, it's done these days, get new one (can you wait for boxing day sales?)

Edited

Are they likely to reduce. Yes I can wait, it's still doing a 2 hour wash cycle just doesn't come out as dry as I would like it.

They offer a 10 years parts warranty. I really think washing machines should last longer as I'm.a single person

Crazybigtoe · 20/12/2025 12:44

You mean it's not spinning like it should or is it a washer/drier?

mugglewump · 20/12/2025 12:47

Get some other quotes for a repair. We have a great guy around here called The Spin Doctor, so local, independent repairers do exist. I think it is so sad that people are saying get a new one after 5 years - what a massive environmental waste. Please look to keep it going.

runwithme · 20/12/2025 12:51

Have you cleared the filter?

mydogisanidiott · 20/12/2025 12:53

Depends what brand, how much it cost and if you have hard water and what is wrong with it.

DinoLil · 20/12/2025 12:54

Bah, just typed a reply, went to grab a link and whoosh, lost my reply!

Anyway, in short, my machine packed up last weekend. You can buy a cheap one from Argos for £199 so I'd look at that than paying £150 for a repair.

Atm I'm bailing mine out then emptying the drain (lots of towels, one flooded kitchen) and doing the same again. At least I can get some clean knickers, albeit sopping wet, which then need wringing out and the dehumidifier on full whack.

The problem with the likes of Argos is they charge about £50 for disposal and connecting the new one. I'm physically unable to pull out my broken one and disconnect it.

Always at Christmas, eh??

5 years but how many washes? 2x day is heavy. Once a week it should last longer

Op has an integrated washing machine so will need one suitable plus the issue of fitting.

for me it would depend. How much was it in the first place, do i feel i have amortised that cost?
Is the repair guaranteed for a year, at least?
How much have similar machines been improved in terms of energy and water efficiency to make it worth buying a new one?
or would it be worth getting a 2nd hand one (taking the energy/water efficiency issue)

alternatively: you could go to the river and bang your smalls against a rock to get them clean?

Bobiverse · 20/12/2025 12:58

You must have a local repair guy who can do it cheaper. I’d repair. I really hate the way everyone just throws everything out now instead of fixing them and using them for years and years. It’s so wasteful.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 20/12/2025 12:58

I got a new machine from Amazon recently. Freestanding but it was only £170 (they offered it on five interest free payments of £34) included free installation/ disposal of old machine.

ComtesseDeSpair · 20/12/2025 13:00

At five years old I’d replace, especially if yours is in heavy use. Yes, I know it’s not as eco friendly as a repair, but I’ve always found that once something older begins to fail, further faults usually follow. If it’s compatible with your cabinet and you want a longer guarantee, Ikea offer five years on their integrated appliances. I’ve been very happy with ours.

AddictedToBooks · 20/12/2025 13:02

Sorry if you've answered this, but have you emptied the filter at the bottom of your washing machine?
The first symptom of a blocked filter is clothes not draining properly. It's a really easy fix that you can do yourself with no special tools needed (usually).

It could be something as simple as a hairpin, loose screw, bra wire or even just fluff that's blocked it.

RosesAndHellebores · 20/12/2025 13:03

@applianceworldqwe

So, to be clear about the facts:
You are single, so presumavly the machine does 2 to 3 loads pw.
The machine is a combined washer/drier and integrated.
You had a one year warranty.

If that's correct, I think a repair is merited but I'd shop around and see if there's someone local on check a trade who could help. However if £149 is the manufacturer's repair cost, I might just go that route.

Alternatively, if it's washing OK but the dry cycle isn't great, can you not give it an extra 30 mins.

If you mean it isn't draining properly, then have you checked the filter and drained off the excess into a bowl. There's usually an access panel near the bottom of the machine.

GoldDuster · 20/12/2025 13:04

runwithme · 20/12/2025 12:51

Have you cleared the filter?

This. I don't think it's necessarily that appliances don't work for very long, maybe it's that we are less inclined or able to do any ongoing maintenence. It could be a really easy fix OP, I'm thinking there are plenty of washing machines that went to the tip with a blocked filter.

If it's a decent machine and it's had light use, and it's just not draining quite as well as it used to, definitely worth getting someone local to take a look.

Catpiece · 20/12/2025 13:05

If the washing’s not coming out dry enough after the wash and spin just put it on a spin cycle to get the extra water out. Try that for now but after 5 years it’s probably given up the ghost. They’re not built to last these days

Mine never do, a premium machine in theory, will last longer
.Only cat and I, can you not get freeestanding ? I

The problem is that it's often cheaper and easier to just replace it. £150 to repair a 5yo machine is a lot of money.

Notmyreality · 20/12/2025 13:07

runwithme · 20/12/2025 12:51

Have you cleared the filter?

Indeed. If it’s “not coming out as dry as I want it/it used to” that sounds like something is blocked and or easily replaced. I’d get a local repair guy to take a look at it. People replace things all too often these days when with a bit of knowledge can be repaired. I say this as someone who has performed multiple repairs on our washer and dryer. A bit of know how goes a long way.
