Broken washing machine, what to do

Replace or get a repair from manufacturer which is £149.

I find it terrible it's only a 1 year warranty on integrated washing machines.

I don't know if I should repair at £149 or get a new one? It's 5 years old now

The problem is that it's often cheaper and easier to just replace it. £150 to repair a 5yo machine is a lot of money.

We really need to start taking even a small amount of individual inconvenience for the greater good, rather than just chucking more stuff into landfill and buying new when a repair could keep the machine going another 5 years.

RosesAndHellebores · 20/12/2025 13:15

Our machine is 10 years old, has probably done an average of 7/8 loads a week, I've drained it a couple of times due to filter. Once a fortnight I wash the cleaning cloths, and DH's hankie (I know) at 95° with aerial bio and a handful of washing soda.

It's not even a super expensive one: JL own brand.

Right, except a) not everyone can afford to do that and b) OP could easily spend £150 on this repair and then something else breaks in another 6 months anyway.

Maybe you should blame the companies for making stuff that's designed to break and be replaced instead, rather than the individual who rarely has a choice?

Knowing where the filter is and clearing it is even cheaper.

Get some other quotes for a repair. We have a great guy around here called The Spin Doctor, so local, independent repairers do exist. I think it is so sad that people are saying get a new one after 5 years - what a massive environmental waste. Please look to keep it going.

Agreed, more landfill, yay.

Sgtmajormummy · 20/12/2025 13:46

From experience, integrated washer/dryers are seriously expensive, often over £1000. And not that efficient, like 1000rpm.
In your case I’d check the filter (dog poop bag in a pocket washed into ours) and then pay to repair.

Well yes, if that's the issue, of course it's cheaper.

But really, we should be looking at companies who are making appliances designed to break and/or become obsolete in a matter of years, not individuals who have very little choice over what to buy.

My washing machine repair man recommends JL washing machines. He says they are an expensive brand I can’t remember which off label. Everything inside is the same as an expensive brand.

Just checked on the price I gave. I was remembering over ten years ago.
Curry’s have a Candy integrated washer/dryer with 1600 spin for less than £500.

If you’re tending towards replacing, OP.

Your local washing machine repair place might be cheaper.

Blueberrymuffinsforthewin · 21/12/2025 00:12

My 5 year old washing machine recently broke and I was about to pay £100 in getting it repaired then realised a new one costs between £200-£300 so got a new one instead. I feel like especially for a cheaper machine once one thing starts going wrong it's only a matter of time before something else would. My opinion would probably be different if it was a more expensive machine to begin with.

I would advise caution on Candy products. We have had to replace our Candy dishwasher after 7 years hob after 8 and fridge freezer also after 8. Came with our new build and were the only White goods that came with it. Glad I brought my old washing machine which is a AEG and still going strong since 2009 and left behind my Siemens dishwasher which was still working at 19 years old.

herbalteabag · 21/12/2025 00:51

Personally I would get it repaired. A washing machine should last longer than 5 years - mine is 14 years, although I think I will need a new one soon. I have had the odd repair here and there.

Neveranynamesleft · 21/12/2025 10:49

If you're strapped for cash at the moment maybe take a look on the freebie sites such as Freecycle or Freegle. People give them away when no longer needed getting a new kitchen or whatever.

LakieLady · 21/12/2025 10:56

applianceworldqwe · 20/12/2025 12:41

They offer a 10 years parts warranty. I really think washing machines should last longer as I'm.a single person

I agree.

I had to replace mine a few weeks ago. I'd had it so long that I can't remember how long it was, but it was at least 18 years and could have been a fair bit longer. It wouldn't surprise me if it was 25 years old. Most of that time it was doing 2 people's laundry, and had never needed fixing.

I replaced it with a machine from the same manufacturer, but I know it won't last as long as the previous one. Stuff just doesn't these days.

RollOnSunshine · 21/12/2025 10:57

Might help if you tell us what is actually wrong with the machine.

Agree and you can get a new one for less than 300
