The issue is that they're to deter visitors because they're so uncomfortable, not for any anti virus reason.

Visits in some hospitals visiting has become more rigid anyway so if people are not able to visit then their comfort will be protected

Don't have a problem with restricted visiting (unbelievable how safe hospitals are in general tbh). Do have a problem with pressure to wear masks because some people are superstitious without realising.

EasternStandard · 19/12/2025 18:44

I haven’t seen anyone wearing them. No hospital visits though.

Netcam · 19/12/2025 18:44

I had to go to A & E a few weeks ago and all the doctors I saw as well as a large percentage of the other staff were wearing masks. Only a handful of patients in the waiting area were wearing them.

Being instructed/forced to wear a mask is an infringement of our civil liberties. It is the first step on the road to the ridiculous (& damaging) "rules" we saw in the pandemic. So it is a big deal.
Obviously, if people make the choice to wear a mask, that's entirely up to them.

God almighty, what a pile of absolute shite.

You have just just typed a jumble of words, you think mask wearing is "supersition" you think Dr's nurses other health professional wear masks for a laugh or just show,

GKG1 · 19/12/2025 18:54

Those who are nhs here, are they operating on the assumption that there can be a asymptomatic transmission of flu? As why would they not just give the message that you should wear a mask if you have respiratory symptoms? It would presumably control spread more effectively to ask people with symptoms not to come into the hospital unless necessary, and to mask if they have to come in?

Charlottespider · 19/12/2025 19:12

Opening windows, HEPA filters, ffp2/3 masking in healthcare settings seem sensible to me - not just from an obvious health perspective, but also because of the knock on economic impacts - it’s unaffordable and unsustainable to keep ignoring these.

I'm afraid I'm going to share this here because I feel the need to share it with somebody and it's not worth its own thread

There was a woman on the bus wearing a mask. She got off at the same stop as me. There's a couple of blocks of flats next to that bus stop.

I don't think she realised that other people were getting off the bus behind her!!!!

She removed the mask, hawked and spat

Every kind of went "eeeew" but just walked off. I looked at her in complete horror and said "fuck's sake, I really hope you don't live in my block".

To be honest, when I was living in London, I wouldn't have dared to say that because I think I'd get stabbed or something

She stammered out "sorry" and scuttered away, fortunately not resident in my block!

But honestly, what the hell is wrong with people who think it's okay to spit in public like that? And she acted like she was stunned that other people were getting off the bus and would be in close proximity to her

So if I catch anything, it will be from that bloody woman. And she was wearing a mask!

thanks, I feel better now!

Oh my actual God. You seriously think vulnerable people wear masks out of fucking superstition?

What was Covid then, a spell from a nasty fairy?

Masks are the silliest bloody thing ever I'm sad I live in a dumb era

In what way are they ‘silly’? 🙄

Some people are so deep into the conspiracy-theorist mindset that they think covid was a government psy-op deliberately bioengineered to enforce some flavour of vaguely-specified "compliance" from the populace, and/or entirely fake and harmless, and/or a means to get nanobot/5G/graphene/mind-control/lethal implants into us via vaccinations, and/or instigated to make "big pharma" billions, and/or a means for Bill Gates, George Soros and the various other Evil Bogeymen to kill off most of the world's population. And yes, those theories are often contradictory but that doesn't matter.

When I was still on Twitter in 2021/22 I remember various people around saying that Covid lockdowns would never end and would, instead, presage the imminent confinement of the entire population to their homes in perpetuity. Strangely those same people blocked me in 2023/24 when I reminded them of their bullshit predictions.

Iocanepowder · 19/12/2025 20:18

I would refuse to wear one tbh. Have some mild PTSD after some lockdown experiences.

I wore one today for the supermarket and doctors. Didn’t see anyone else in one, did get a few funny looks but they don’t know my medical issues so I’m very much “whatever”

Are you buying masks that are made out of barbed wire?

TheNoonBell · 19/12/2025 22:06

I took DH to the big nearby hospital earlier in the week and very few people were masked, mainly the elderly had them. None of the nurses and doctors had them on but all the receptionists and admin people did.

Shmoigel · 19/12/2025 22:08

Trust me you don’t want the flu I have right now

RubyMentor · 19/12/2025 22:12

Dappy777 · 19/12/2025 16:55

Keep it in perspective. There is a nasty flu virus going round, and if people wear masks in confined public spaces that will slow its spread and relieve pressure the NHS. No big deal.

Thank you lots of positive posts here but this sums it up

How is it superstition when doctors and nurses wore them BEFORE covid when they were reverse barrier nursing me?

GregoryFluff · 19/12/2025 22:26

Totally off topic, but please consider the Deaf community when masking. So many people rely on lip reading and if they're reduced to just what they can hear through their aids, speak clearly, pronounce well and give them an extra few seconds to process what you're saying, especially in medical settings that are often loud with loads of environmental noise
Thank you

In our GP surgery we're obviously trying to protect the vulnerable people in the waiting room- but also trying to keep staff well enough to actually see patients. There's no slack in the system at this time of year (when is there!), and if we start to lose staff to flu (or other illnesses severe enough to keep us off work) there's no back up and we can't just shut the doors. Some staff may be vulnerable themselves to more severe disease as well. We're all vaccinated for flu, but that's not always 100%, and no covid vaccines for health care staff this year.

Quite! I wonder if the civil liberties poster has an issue with this??
(Healthcare professional who has been coughed on innumerous times this week so I may be somewhat fierce about the issue especially as it's looking like my elderly relatives last Christmas with us and I'd rather not be ill or pass anything to them to finish them off sooner...)
