To not give the postman a Christmas bung

...to not give the postman a Christmas card with a fiver in it. Husband wants to but I say no. As for the bin men, not a chance !

What do you do?

I leave beer/chocolates/biscuits for the bin men. They do a job that very few people want to do - but are happy to complain about - it’s very poorly paid, they’re outside in all weathers, no matter how hot, cold or wet it is.

i don’t give them cash tips (although I know others do) as they’re not supposed to accept any gratuities/gifts/tips and I wouldn’t want to put them in an awkward position or get them in trouble.

That’s just you making a statement look at us we have money to burn.

Projection much?

It's a yearly Christmas gift, not a tip.

They leave us a card and wrapped toffee, we leave a card and small gift of cash..

cockandbullstories · 18/12/2025 20:25

Zov · 18/12/2025 14:22

Exactly. Apart from being out of date, and having no place in the 21st century, tipping is quite patronising. It kind of screams 'oh here you are you poor lamb, have five pounds from me, coz I know you are poorer than me..,' Wink

That's such a sad attitude.

mummybear35 · 18/12/2025 21:19

I used to when I’d get daily posts and the same postie…now I’m lucky if postie (several different ones sometimes) cones once or trice a week! Lots of mail delivered late despite having first class stamp on them and lots of mail lost..post at times flung near post box as opposed to IN postbox so if raining, post gets wet…so no, there will be no tips this year 😒

Redandwhiterose · 18/12/2025 21:20

One of the nicer things about having a little spare cash is being able to tip people I find. It gives me satisfaction to show my gratitude to someone who is pulling out all the stops to do a good service and since I have friends in retail, postal service and nursing I know that it is enormously appreciated. If you are working a 6 day week of 12 hour plus shifts in the rain to deliver Christmas despite the enormous backlog of mail that tip is much appreciated

theyrenotfeedingtheadults · 18/12/2025 21:20

I find the whole concept of tipping posties and bin men completely bizarre. Hardly ever see a postie, and bin men are different people every time. I’ll give my hairdresser and beautician a bottle of wine or £10 each though as I see them regularly throughout the year.

Autumngirl312 · 18/12/2025 21:28

We don't have a regular postie any more, but I did leave a card with a fiver in for my milkman - he's only a young lad and he's out in all weathers at all hours. I have left a card and chocolate for my postie a long while ago when we had a consistent delivery guy though.

ohtowinthelottery · 18/12/2025 21:29

@Redandwhiterose I do tip certain people who give a good service but sadly the Postman doesn't fall into that category these days.
On the few days that they do deliver it is not unusual for us to have next doors mail mixed in with ours or in fact only their mail put through the letterbox. And after having to cancel my credit card due to a fraud of unknown origin a few weeks ago, I was not impressed that one of my neighbours delivered my post which included my replacement credit card as a batch of our mail had been delivered to his house.

hipposcanweartutus · 18/12/2025 21:30

We tip our postman because he is amazing! We moved house to the next road and it all got very complicated (several redirections in place in different names!) and he just knows what post is ours and delivers it to us. He is one in a million!

RessicaJabbit · 18/12/2025 21:34

Notmyreality · 18/12/2025 06:47

No tips here. They are doing the job they are paid to do. Why would I tip them? I don’t tip the people on the checkout at Tesco or the people behind the counter at any of a hundred shops I go in. Or my Evri driver or my Amazon driver(s)…..

You don't give tips to anyone ever as a thank you?

Agree thats annoying, it sounds like very bad sorting.
Where I live there have been so many new houses built that the postman can no longer complete the rounds each day so they have to stagger what they take out. The post office hasn't employed extra staff.
In 20 years I'm told that this is the worst Xmas for post volume. I've had delays in parcels since the beginning of November.

itbemay1 · 18/12/2025 21:37

We always give the postie a card with £10 in. Ours is brilliant! Loves a chat and great for a local gossip!

Happyholidays78 · 18/12/2025 21:37

We don't tip the postman as we don't have a lot of post or parcels & we don't have the same person & haven't done for a few years. My partner is a postman who has a set round (that he's had to fight hard to keep) & he has generous tips, Royal Mail really do need to keep the same postmen/wemon on the same rounds as they get to know the customers, where to leave parcels, occasionally check in on vulnerable older person. Honestly my partner has many stories where he's called an ambulance, helped pick an older person up & even returned a wandering toddler to their house. If you've got a good postie they appreciate a tip or some nice biscuits & even a calipo in the summer. We get our binmen a huge pack of local cider.

If you've got a postie consistently on the same round they absolutely know ALL the gossip!

I am tipping my postman £20 this year, he’s a lovely, cheery chap, looks after my parcels. He goes above and beyond. I used to have a lovely Evri driver and tipped her last year the same but she quit this year.

This is the thing. It’s for those who go above and beyond to show your recognition and hope they continue and don’t quite. We’ve actually never done it. But this year we have a fairly regular postie who is great and a fab evri lady who looks after our stuff.

am thinking of a box of chocs. We can’t afford too much but it’s more the token.

It’s bizarre because you don’t see them! Yet you’re happy to give to hairdresser. Therefore it’s not bizarre a- it’s about who you see and value.

Our postman is great. You just made me want to give something. Maybe some chocolates or a bottle of something...

£20 for ours. He's fab.

In what way? What does he do other than put letters through your door?
What am I missing? How is it a job you can be fab at?

Mine is a great chap. .... By being friendly, popping the post in a preferred spot, stopping you as you pass by a d asking if you want your post now, or in the letter box, by knocking and letting you know that something has happened (mine told me I left my keys in the door), he saves the elastic bands for my daughter and puts them round all our post. He lets her "help" post leti, always gives her the thumbs up/says "yes I've got it!" when she asks if he got her letter she posted etc

Icecreamandcoffee · 18/12/2025 22:03

I always make lots of sausage rolls and put them out for the postie, milk man and the bin men. I also make a few for the delivery drivers (we have the same evri/ dpd drivers everytime) Always wrap the bin mens sausage rolls up on a cake board in foil then bagged and place on top of bin with note on for the bin men. Leave posties on the doorstep wrapped in foil and bagged as well as the milk mans. I do this at Easter too.

Let's just say the blindest of eyes is turned on bin days to my overflowing bin. We are supposed to have lid securely down and there are always lots of complaints at bins not been emptied due to the lid not been fully closed. My bin also mysteriously gets returned very close to my drive every week, whereas most of the street's bins are all over the path and 3 houses down. I did inadvertently follow them one year down the road when DD was a baby and wouldn't sleep and I decided to do a 6.30am pram walk as I couldn't listen to the screaming in the house anymore. I watched the bin crew scarf the lot down (about 20 large sausage rolls) between them. I assumed some would make it back to the depot - it seems not. So now I make a batch before Christmas and a batch before new year for both bin crews (waste and recycling alternate here).

Similarly we've never had an issue with the post or milk rounds. Not one of our parcels has ended up in a bin or yeeted over a fence when our usual driver is on.

Thanks for clearing that up. I don't really see ours much. We don't get much post. Parcels come mainly from Amazon and I wouldn't notice if we didn't get post for a week unless i was expecting something

Minnie798 · 18/12/2025 22:09

Yes we give a gift to our post lady. The refuse collectors we don't bother- they frequently leave our bins half way down the street, outside someone else's house.
Can't even be arsed putting it back where they found it.
